James Worthy, who played his entire career for the Lakers was a 7-time NBA all-star, played on 3 NBA title teams, and was the NBA Finals MVP in 1988. By his own admission, Worthy had many sleepless nights because of Larry Bird when the Lakers played the Celtics in those epic NBA Finals series of the 1980's. Worthy was once quoted as saying, "Michael Jordan made you look slow." "Larry Bird made you look stupid."

I like the story he tells about Larry telling him the play that was coming. Or John Salley on Larry and Larry changing the play when he heard him tell Larry he wasn't getting help to guard him. Or all the times when the other team put a white guy on him to guard him and he told the other team he was being disrespected.

Jordan was one of the smartest players in the league, it's ashame he never got credit for that and people only lavished praise on him for his athleticism.
Larry Bird did not take pain killers. One time when he had a toe infection and it became too painful to play, the team medic had to drain the infection (in the locker room) and asked Larry if he wanted something for pain and he replied "Just give me a beer".
Same thing when he fractured the orbital bone in his cheek. While sitting there, he drank a beer, said he had to pee and snuck back onto the court, with a concussion and the broken bone. The man was a beast like no other.

You mentioned the loyalty of the fans to the dedicated players; Larry's retirement ceremony was NOT on a game night as was customary. It was a stand alone event and you could not get a ticket, they sold out the Garden for his retirement ceremony. That is how dedicated the fans were to Larry.
They didn't just sell out. There were so many people trying to get in by any means possible that it was highly overcrowded and they had to call in extra police to guard entrances or the fire marshal was going to shut it down

Bird is my number 1. He never took pain medication even when his back was at it's worst. He was so tough. He also loved to tell the other team what he was going to do and dare them to try to stop him. Lol

There is a video of people talking about teams putting a white player to guard him. It is hilarious and a great video. And there are so many stories of him telling coaches and the white guys guarding him. He felt completely disrespected when they put white guys on him to guard him.
When it comes to toughness, it was a different game back when Bird, Magic and Mike were playing. It was a game for real men. I miss these days.
These highlights are against , close to 30+ Hall of Famers. One thing they do not say here is, When Bird came into the league. The NBA was really close to bancruptcy. He and Magic Johnson saved the NBA.
Larry went on to have a really good career as a coach and executive for the Pacers. So player of the year, coach of the year, and executive of the year. A startling knowledge of basketball.

Larry would be at the top of everyone's GOAT list if his health allowed him to play longer. Just the fact that after just 13 seasons he is in the conversation shows how great he was.

Grew up in Boston, from 1957 to 1969, 12 years, 11 championships 10 consecutive. In 1974 & 1976 championship series, you could still get game day tickets. Bird and Magic entered the league in 1979/80 season and made it what is is now. Before they came in, the NBA games were played on TV tape delayed, or were preempted. Watching Bird, Magic, and that era of the NBA was incredible. Todays game is schoolyard show off
Personally I think the 3 point shot has taken away the creativity of the game. It is a real shame.

Today's game is like watching a game of horse, around the world or whatever you call it. They give cheap fouls. I played highschool ball in late 80 and we were physical. Going for rebounds was tough. You banged each other.
Today's game bunch of softies. Nobody challenges and very little on stealing the ball or pressing the dribbler.
I'm younger than you. Born in 64 in Worcester. First NBA game I ever watched was the Triple overtime game against Phoenix in the 76 playoffs just after 6th grade ended. Havilchek hit this ridiculous jumper to tie it or win it. But I was hooked. When Larry came into the league i went to games with my friend, $10.00 nose bleed seats! Saw some amazing games; Larry dueling with Dr J. Dave Cowens duking it out at center court with Tree Rollins. Mchale doing 360 dunks in the warm up lay up line...Just a magical time.

When he came back in that game after breaking his cheek, Larry said he was seeing double. When he closed his right eye and then took a shot, he hit the basket. So he knew the vision in his left eye was accurate. So for the rest of the night he closed his right eye when passing or shooting.
He would also be dominant because in this era, you can’t touch anybody. Back then you had to be physical with him to stop him. He would have a field day in this modern league.
Larry is my GOAT. I truly believe that Bird is the best all-around player at his peak to ever play. You can see Larry's impact on the game in the players of today, they have more of Bird like skills than they did back in Bird's time.
Growing up in Massachusetts in that time it's was a blast watching Larry play. His awareness for the game was crazy.
Larry Legend 🤘
The injury he suffered from that fall in the Pacers game were a broken cheekbone, a concussion, and double vision from the eyeball becoming misshapen by the orbital fracture. The last few years of his career were played with what was essentially a broken backhoe incurred while shoveling gravel into place for his mother's driveway. He often required traction and/or a back brace and was also known to lay on the floor in front of the bench while not in the game. This was because his back would lock up if he simply sat on the bench.
He was not only highly regarded as a player, being only one of three players to receive three MVP awards in a row (along with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain) but also was named Coach of the Year while coaching the Pacers to the only finals in franchise history but was selected a NBA Executive of the Year as the general manager of the Pacers.
I was in high school in the 80s. Loved Bird and Magic. Even if you didn't like basketball, they changed the NBA. It wouldn't exist today without them!
There is an amazing documentary about their relationship - 'The Courtship of Rivals.' But their story together as rivals in college and the NBA to teammates ending their careers together on the 1992 Olympic Dream Team to end their careers as best friends is one of the best documentaries about the NBA.
Thank you for noticing that players of the past were loyal to their team and teammates, not rings and records. Players in the 80s and 90s were 100% loyal to their team in good times and bad times. You don't see that today.
Well said! I agree. Was in HS in the 80s also. Bird and Magic saved the NBA. It was struggling when they were drafted. NCAA had a bigger draw then the NBA back then. Jordan grew the NBA, but they saved it before Jordan came along. (I say that with all due respect to MJ though.) And that is a great documentary. I watched it a few times.

Larry's retirement was at the Boston Garden during a non-game night..thats right... the image in the video were fans that got to see him.,, no standing room... packed. Larry did not have a retirement tour year of basketball... he announced.. and then night ony. One and done..thats Larry the Legend.

Loved your reactions... Couple things to note about that video... The shot where he says, Im going right back to the same spot was even more impressive as they left part of it out. He actually hit three shots. One before the timeout was called, then made the next shot to force OT, then in OT hit another three at the buzzer to win it. On the night they had his retirement ceremony, there wasn't even game scheduled. They packed Boston Garden on a night there wasn't even a game being played. That's how much he meant to Boston and to basketball
Living just north of Boston, I had the privilege to have a close up view of Bird’s entire career.
I still believe MJ is the GOAT, but definitely put Larry Legend, in the top five, of NBA greats.
He would have absolutely dominated, in today’s game.
If you think this is impressive, there are 2 more videos you need to watch. One is, 5 times he played injured and the second is 4 times he played injured. He played with a bad back, an infection in his foot, a hole in his face, and double vision more than once. He truly is a GOAT.

The night before a big game Bird could be found at a local bar drinking everyone under the table and getting into fist fights. Only 3 players in NBA history ever won 3 MVP's in a row - Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Larry Bird.
Two Pat Riley quotes about Bird:
1) "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird."

Thing about Bird is that he so versatile and adaptive. He could burn you 10 different ways including the last second pass to the other guy for the easy shot. You had no idea what he'd do. And he was a master at managing the court to neutralize your defense.
The other thing is his hustle and work ethic. I have read that he wasn't as naturally athletic as some players, but made up for it in hard work and intensity.
He hit 'em with the superhero landing when coming back courtside after the busted cheek. They weren't ready. Legend.
By far the best basketball IQ in the game. His court awareness was ridiculous and he was one of a kind .... You don't get the name Larry legend by being mediocre. My favorite player from that era
One of my favorite Bird moments came when the Celtics were playing the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brad Doughtry was a 7 foot All-Star center for Cleveland. When Bird received a pass in the corner, Brad came running out to cover. Bird pump fakes and Brad soars to block the shot. Bird pulls the ball down and as Brad goes past, Bird taps him on the butt with the ball and tells him to "fly bird". Then Larry calmly nails the 3.
I remember this. That moment I knew Larry was a street baller gone pro. He wasnt even dissin, just commented on Brad sailin past. Bird would be number 1 if he lasted another 5 years… theres no denying his impact on the game in the Celtic/Lakers era
Larry 's family struggled while he was growing up . He played in pain a lot not only physically but with the pain of his dad's suicide
Fun fact the night of Larry Birds retirement there was no game that night and it was sold out and there was people outside wanting to get in
I watched Larry Legend play my Utah Jazz in the 80’s and 90’s. He is one of the top 10 players ever. Those who played in those times literally beat each other up during those games. Now days if you look at a star wrong a foul gets called.
Bird's retirement ceremony wasn't on a game night. The Garden was filled just to see his retirement and say goodbye. He was also later a coach of the year and later the executive of the year.
I remember my grandfather watching the game between the Lakers magic Johnson and Larry bird my grampa was a huge fan of Larry bird when I look at footage now they really threw blows at one another but yes Larry bird was a spectacular player!!!!👍

I do like what you said about the love for the game and all...Larry really was "different" in many ways, and he was also obviously the best player on the court at any given time. I grew up watching him. Most 'clutch' player ever, as The Steal showed....and y'all have NO idea of the pain Larry played in since '84 when he horribly injured his back by putting a new driveway in for his MOM in the offseason. Blue-collar guy to the core....the more you look into him and his career, the more astonishing it all gets.

You guys need to do Magic's mix next. It's crazy, they were such different players in many respects, and yet in others -- court vision, passing, IQ, instincts, savage competitiveness -- they were identical. The NBA will never see anything like their rivalry ever again. And the fact they came out of it on the other side such great friends is pretty awesome.
Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted I always chuckle, when I see Bird pause & stare as his opponent, before passing @ 11:12 😂🤣😂 Please do a deep dive on Larry, you won't be disappointed! I grew up watching Larry here in NH. The Celtics and Lakers rivalry was one of the best rivalries in sports to watch.
Bird is worthy of a deep dive, if only for your own amazement. His greatness increases exponentially when you hear his back story. And his legendary trash talking is not only crazy, it's also very, very funny. And when you hear his contemporaries talk about his game, he really rises to a very elite place among the NBA greats.

Watch "Larry Bird making the case" it's a great video making the case for Larry being the GOAT! But the best and a must watch is "Larry and Magic a courtship of rivals"! I lived through the time and those two men literally saved professional basketball and turned it into a global phenomenon! He was the most complete player to ever step onto the court with no holes in his game, they didn't call him basketball Jesus for nothing.

Most people, these days, don't know how good Larry Bird truly was. I got hooked on basketball because of who was in the league back in the day: Larry, Dr. J, Magic Johnson Then MJ and the Round Mound of Rebound etc. Good times!

I think it's important to mention. There was no game/event scheduled for the night of Bird's retirement ceremony. Everyone is there just for that. That's how loved he is in Boston.

Born in 71, and watched his career in the days I played and watched sports. Bird is the GOAT in my opinion. Only bball player I will watch a clip or show about.

You can’t do Larry Bird without doing magic Johnson, they go together. They are credited with saving basketball in the 1980s. have to passing skills and basketball IQ. Being a Laker fan, I’m partial to Magic, but he backs it up with winning the college NCAA basketball championship in 1979 against Larry Bird team and won two out 3 NBA finals against Larry Bird Celtics.
Magic had a better supporting cast for those matchups (especially the college one). If Magic had been with the Celtics and Bird with the Lakers, those numbers would have been reversed.

You guys may not realize, but the game that he came back from the fracture orbital bone was game five in the best of five playoff series against them and they only won by three points. Larry scored like 17 points in the fourth quarter and LaSalle Thompson from the pacers said that's a performance that he'd tell his kids about or his grandkids. It was unbelievable. It was up there with the showdown he had with Dominique in game 7 in 87. I believe every challenge like that that Larry had he prevailed in. The only time he failed is when he missed that shot against the Lakers
Love watching you guys discover his game - there are so many more videos you need to see. His Trash Talking video, Passing Video, 5 x he was injured and didn't quit. Having seen him play in person (albeit against my Knicks! lol) he's top 3 in my book. Nothing like a Sunday afternoon game at MSG vs Boston. . .

What a lot of people don’t know is when Larry Bird came back in game with broken cheek bone. He was in the locker room and trainer said “I guess you’re done for the night” and Bird said “ yeah it looks that way “. As soon as the trainer put his back to bird he slipped out the locker room and onto the court! On of only a handful of true legends
What these videos can't really show is his unbelievable competitiveness. It was all about winning the game.

Certain things apply in any walk of life. You mentioned many of them in your reaction: dedication, commitment, perseverance, teamwork, love of what you do, intelligence, friendship, and many other things. Even trash-talking, if you can back it up! I think Larry Bird possessed all of these qualities. And, he's one of the GOATS of basketball to boot.
Bird the GOAT!! There are other players who may have been better at some things than Bird but he was good at everything and there has never been anyone like him, good at everything!

Larry learned how to play through pain from his father. Larry tells a time his father broke his ankle. Larry would have to puts his dad's boot on the swollen and black and blue ankle so his dad could go to work. He learned if you being paid, you have to work.

I was a child watching all of that on a I think a 6 inch black and white red television. Bird was the only reason I ever watched basketball. That was the ultimate Era to me.

Also remember that in today's game if a defender looks at their opposition cross-eyed its blown up as an immediate foul. In that era defense was very physical and at times compared to today would be seen as an all-out mugging. These guys not only had to fight through that offensively, but they had to expend energy playing a physical game defensively too.
I grew up about an hour away from French Lick, and Larry will always be my number one player.
Thanks for checking this out. The Bird Magic rivalry moved to the NBA from college where they played each other for the NCAA Div 1 National Championshiip. They rejuvinated the NBA, bringing renewed interest to professional basketball. I believe both Bird and Magic retired with the teams that initially signed them. That kind of loyalty is very rare in sports anymore.

My dad watched Bird play in college, and said he knew he'd be even better in the pros because his passes wouldn't be bouncing off his teammates' heads (b/c his college teammates wouldn't know the pass was coming).

I was never a Celtics fan or a Lakers fan in the 80's, but when they played each other, I never missed a game. The older I get, the more thankful I am to have been witness to the GOAT of the NBA. MJ is my GOAT but he never would have been the GOAT if not for Larry Legend.
