Most NBA legends, that played both of them and Michael Jordan, say that Bird was the hardest to guard and scariest opponent. He was incredible, and had suffered a horrible accident to his right hand, before he ever started playing professionally. Had several surgeries, and claimed he never had the same feel for the ball that he used to. Imagine what a fully healthy Larry Legend could’ve accomplished. It is so inspiring to know he just worked harder. Wow

I am from southern Indiana. Larry's high school team played against us a couple of times per season. At first glance, me an my high school friends were asking "who is this goofy looking beanpole?" He torched us every time. It did not take long for us to know he was something special, even in high school. He is very shy but he has an unmacthed feel for the game as it should be played from a team perspective. Had it not been for some very influential people (police, small college coaches, and dedicated friends) his shyness may have caused the world to never see Larry Bird's greatness. He is definitely one of the top ten players to ever play the game. I have him in my top three simply because I followed his entire career. I recommend the documentary titled "Courtship of Two Rivals". It is about him and Magic. It explains how they became great friends, despite their fierce competitiveness against each other. It is very emotional. It even shows how together, Bird and Magic saved the NBA.

That play where he fractured his cheek. Story goes is that he also had concussion and was old he couldn't go back in. He was following what was happening in the game and when they weren't looking he just took off and went in. You will be amased what injuries he played with. My GOAT!
Supposedly he actually had double vision the whole time. He took a shot aiming for the basket on the left, and when that worked he just went with it.

Another stat most be sleeping on as well is Bird was 23-11 against Jordan in his career and 6-0 in the playoffs. Also, many players from that era have said they'd much rather play against Jordan than Bird because Bird would give it to you any which way he wanted, offensively or defensively. As for the “where does Larry rank” question. I have him at #1. He took a 29 win team to 61 wins. This is before Parish/McHale/DJ and Ainge. Every single one of his contemporaries were terrified of him and his ability to will his team to victory. That includes Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Drexler, Dr J and Dominique to name a few.
When Jordan was asked to pick his top 5, he says people stop him when he ranks Bird up there. He would respond that “Bird is the best small forward in history and it’s not close!” That included Lebron.
Best shooter ever, best passer ever, best team defender ever, most clutch performer ever, and all while playing in the toughest era in NBA history.

Not only could he shoot the ball and pass , he gave you 10 boards a night a career 24-10-6 guy . Every game he did something that just spun your head. The one I remember was when he beat Olajuwon in a jump ball in the 6th game of The NBA finals . You may claim others as better . There is no one who was a better overall player . He did everything, the thing I remember the most he was a savant at getting loose balls . Something that’s not in a stat book .
I think he also led the league in defensive win shares 5 times? He was a great team defender. I think his only weakness was he was an NBA avg straight up defender at his position

This was my era, and I grew up with him on my team. Bird was great for his first 8/9 yrs, but injuries cut his career short. Statistically, his totals aren’t super high, but his averages are unreal. He was a problem for anyone playing against him.

Haven't watched pro sports for a while, various reasons, but a few decades ago it didn't matter what the sport, by the 3rd period/quarter etc, people had blood on their jerseys, knuckles, nose, wherever. They played all out regardless of whether or not they were injured/in pain. Pain Heals.. Chicks Dig Scars.. Glory Last Forever.

Naw, they’ve gotten soft compared to back then. Everything is softer than back then. Larry fractured his cheek and came back when the trainer wasn’t looking.

I was alive during that time watching those games. Players were beating on each other and if you watch further Bird videos... top players (legends) of that era said they would hard foul him and Larry would simply switch to his left hand if the Refs were *not* catching the fouls against him.

The1980's was a lot tougher than today. A lot of today's rules are because of the way they played the game back then. There was no flagrant foul rule.

The year before Bird and Magic entered the league the NBA playoffs were shown on tape delay after the 11 o'clock news...because reruns of Bonanza kept them out of prime time! That all changed immediately with Bird and Magics rookie seasons...fresh off the Bird/Magic NCAA finals game which was and still is the most viewed NCAA event of all time! Those Celtics/Lakers finals were riveting, brutal, and fiercely competitive can't miss prime time events! The flagrant foul didn't start till the 90's...and hand checking was allowed. That's why they say Bird and Magic saved the NBA.

Whenever I watch the game film of Larry after he fractured his cheek all I can think is how bad the throbbing in his face would be and how much worse running would make it. Larry was a beast. He was also super competitive. When Kevin McHale broke Larry's Celtic record (53) point game with a 56 point game and chose to sit out with a 1.25 left on the clock Larry gave him credit for a great game but also said... he should've gone for 60. Nine days later Larry reclaimed his title with a 60 point game. In both cases neither would've achieved those numbers without the help of the other but Larry didn't like to lose. When Larry and Magic became a grudge match between the Celtics and the Lakers the NBA was a mess. The networks weren't playing the games and would put on reruns rather than playoff games. Larry and Magic changed the game. Larry was Rookie of the Year, MVP, All Star MVP, Coach of the year, and Executive of the year. He's the only person in NBA history that can say that. (I'm old... I remember watching him and Magic play... both were amazing to watch).
I had my cheekbone fractured in 2003. If I took a deep breath through my right nostril, I would get a choking/slash stabbing pain in my face and right eye. The harder I took a breathe, the more it would swell. 😂 I laugh because I deserved it. I fought dudes brother and then the special one crushed my face 😂 I did throw a sucker punch. Not cool.
He really was that good, but I’m biased, growing up just outside Boston. I went to a game at the old Garden for my 13th birthday in 1987, and it’s one of my best memories. They blew out Golden State. Bill Walton had his nose broken from like the 12th time. lol

BUT I want to say how u really impressed me! Most other reactors who STRONGLY fav other players u can always see their prejudice. But not u! If u continue to watch the other highlights on Larry (and I HOPE u do!) Yul hear n SEE why ALL of the SUPERSTARS of the day not just praise him but feared him. In no particular order I have Jordan, Magic and Bird top 3. They are the only three players I've ever seen do something special every single night they played. The rest of the world fighting for the #4 spot.

Bird magic and Jordan are the only 3 players to ever be credited with changing the way basketball was perceived and appreciated. Bird and magic literally saved the game and made it mainstream in the US. Jordan took it worldwide. Every basketball player since owes them a debt of gratitude for that reason.

ranked all time depends on who you ask , younger people sleep on him dont even have him in the top 10 and scoff when you do. most people who are very involved in the game and know the games history have him in the 4-6 spot , for me i have him at #1 for small forwards and #4 overall. Larry had two and only two negatives to his game both of witch was out of his control #1 he was injury prone but he sure played better than anyone who was as injured as he was, #2 he was not super athletic he offset that by learning and developing the skills he had better than just about anyone else who played the game.
when i say injured i mean he played most of his career injured, broke his index finger on his shooting hand before he entered the NBA claimed his shooting was never quite the same.
broke his back in 85 building a driveway for his mom still won MVP that year and the following year as well as a championship the following year. double surgery on both feet in 88. the fall he took in the video is when he broke his cheek, he finished playing that game with double vision.
You wanna see Larry Joe get some serious buckets, you should react to the 85-86 season highlights (the video is titled "Larry Bird Was LEGENDARY During His Prime! 1985-86 Highlights | GOAT SZN"). Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. I dont think we forgot how good he was its just that you dont see that style of play anymore so we see it in a different light and we miss thise days. I mean yeah seeing it growing up we marveled at plays but we didnt think this is the best time in sports and all happy. Back then it was thats just what they do. The quality and loyalty and style just keeps declining from those days

If you haven’t seen it, the 1992 Dream Team documentary is epic. Basketball like you have never seen it. Everyone was glued to their TVs for every game. It was a surreal time. I watch them almost every day and still get chills. CZcams has some of the games that they played against other teams. Larry and Magic (who saved the NBA) came in together and both retired right after the Dream Team finished. 11 future Hall of Famers. Never will there be another Olympic team like them 😊🤙🏽

I didn't see it here yet, so I'm just going to add this. Larry Bird was known for his 3 point shot. The 3 point line wasn't introduced, at any level of BBall, until Larry was in the NBA. He worked to develop his 3 point ball while a professional.
He's also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club (50% shooting, 40% 3pointers, 90% free throws). He averaged that over a 4 year span (but barely missed those marks in two of those 4 years), and that was also around the time he had hurt his back in '85. Was named ROY for the 1979-1980 season when he led the 20 - win Celtics to 60 wins and the playoffs, while also finishing 4th in MVP voting. Bird would then be first or second in MVP voting the next 7 or 8 years, winning MVP three years in a row. A feat no one else has matched to date (the 3 MVPs in a row).
The man deserves to be in the conversation as the GOAT.
EDIT: I forget who said it, but a former NBA player who played against Jordan and Bird once said he'd rather defend Jordan, than defend Larry Bird because, "Jordan makes you look slow. Bird makes you look stupid."

You may not know this but at Larry's retirement night it was packed inside and in the parking lot. But it wasn't a game night. They were all there for only Larry's retirement celebration.

Yes he was concussed. Concussion means his brain slammed against his skull. You can't take that kind of an impact without a Concussion, period. He said he was seeing double and triple. That is a Concussion. And then he had someone distract the trainer so he could sneak back on court.

Your head may have been still at impact, but I guarantee you it moved during impact. They didn't mention a Concussion in the video, but just the fact that he wasn't seeing right means it definitely was a concussion. Couldn't imagine getting clock by a bat, though. Glad you made it out ok.
Guys from that era were just built different. They didn’t load manage. They gave it their all night in and night out. That’s why I loved watching the NBA so much growing up.
Btw, Larry is more than his stats. He was a “pass first” kind of player so while he could have led in scoring, he chose to share with the TEAM. At the end of the day, Larry is up there with Magic leading the WINS percentage column.

I don't know if the game is softer, so much as it is self preservation. Fringe guys will still play through an injury, but stars or even just starters who won't lose their spot have no reason to risk that next big contract. (Honestly cannot blame them)
Bird is my childhood in basketball and watching him and Magic was amazing. I wish I knew how star studded the league was back then so I could appreciate it more haha. Bird is a top 3 to me because he really did everything and somehow made it look do-able.
Basketball is one of those sports where you can pick almost anyone and be right. I have a co worker who has Duncan as his GOAT, and while I disagree, he also ain't wrong. Gotta love how the greats could play in any era, before or after.

On a side note...there was nothing else going on in Boston Garden on the day of that ceremony. No game of any sport, no concerts or performances, nothing. It was sold out JUST for his retirement.
Bird was the best rounded player I would say. Points, assists, steals, rebounds, blocks. He was double digits in all of them.
Stockton and Peyton were also great well rounded/very entertaining players from that era. Plenty of steals/rebounds/blocks for smaller dudes.
