I've heard this song a hundred times and I well up every time.
I always root for her to win... and she never does.
Same
Same here! Insane song...
Same. 😬
newgrl Not yet. She never gives up.
I used to love this song as a kid, basically everything she did. But damn revisiting it now with an adult's understanding the shit hit different.
Seriously. This song has been with me each stage of my life, and at each stage it hits different.
I just saw a comment on another video saying they used to think that the song was about escaping, but now see it as about being trapped.
Yep. Sold my fast car and never left this damn town.
Same here . . Always liked the song for its desire to escape. . . Never really caught the escaped-into-same-situation-I-tried-to-leave part. . . Great analysis
That’s what I’m talking about😭😭
This song breaks my heart. Notice the subtlety of how the lyrics go from "we gotta make a decision" to "you gotta make a decision"
This performance is legendary. Listening to a rowdy crowd of tens of thousands fall slowly silent to an acoustic guitar is astonishing.
She's a musical poet and storyteller. I could listen to her sing all day.
Me too. I love her music.
Well said.
Dammit bro! This song has so much nostalgia for me as my father would listen to Tracy Chapman on cassette and continuously flip the tape back and forth to the point I literally know every song Chapman has by heart. You absolutely killed this reaction and am so glad that I know that someone else besides myself knows what the songs about. SALUTE to you buddy, salute 🙏🤙💯💪🏼
Yep
Right? I love 'Gimme one reason' almost as much as this one.
Tracy Chapman - Give Me One Reason is another great one :)
Ugh! YES!
"Talkin' Bout a Revolution"
czcams.com/video/721JQZw6Spg/video.html
YES!!!
Baby can I hold you is my favorite by her
You can't go wrong with any Tracy Chapman songs.
She was awful young when she wrote this - it was released when she was 23. Amazing talent, as a songwriter & performer.
I know, right! I'm wondering where she got the inspiration from! Her real life wasn't like this but when she sings it, it feels like it was. She's amazing!
I'm just so unhappy that she just sort of disappeared from the mass produced music scene.
I feel pretty silly, I've heard covers of it before actually hearing it and now I understand that no matter how pretty the vocal performances they were hollow. This song was lived, and Tracy makes you feel it in a way the young vocalists that covered it can't.
Most of her stuff on her first album was written years before she recorded the album.
@@eauhomme First album was so emotional and so amazing. If you grew up poor, working poor, or just somewhere in life you didn't know if you ever would escape, then you should listen to that album. I can't listen without tearing up.
This song is over 30 years old and still makes me cry 😢😭. Brilliant
Me too🤧
Unless you've had a perfect life this song reminds a person of the storms we all have been through. If not. You're blessed. Knock on 🪵
You are absolutely not overreaching my friend. She is brilliant and meticulous and deliberate in how she constructs her songs. The entire album is a masterpiece. I am willing to wager $100 to the charity/non-profit of your choice if after listening it does not immediately enter your top 20, if not top 10 favorite albums of all times
I agree, not sure if top 10 but definetly in the top 25 for me.
No overreaching... it's exactly it... 100 percent. Exactly....
Totally agree.
She is everything you've said and more. Brilliantly done and that whole album is an understated masterpiece.
This whole album is iconic. Amazing vocalist and lyricist.
I agree! I've had her CD for years! Love the story teller and that rich voice.
I have this album too!
Ever song you can visualize and feel her emotions on this album.
One of the most underrated, extraordinary songwriters of the last half-century…honestly. No qualifiers, no comparisons, just…extraordinary.
I had the privilege of seeing her perform in 1990 on her Crossroads tour. Brought me to tears more than once, and her music still does.
Most amazing fact: this…was her DEBUT SINGLE!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's raw, emotional, and reminds me a little of my youth. My parents were drug addicts and alcoholics. There were all sorts of different types of abuse going on in my home too. Anywhere but home is where I wanted be. The military was my escape at 18 years old, and after being honorably discharged 4 years later, I began my path to finding healing. For me, that led to God, and through Him, learning humility and forgiveness. Every path is going to be different though. I hope everyone who relates to this song can find hope and healing.
You have a great heart, soldier. Keep being awesome. *Salutes*
🙏❤
Amen!
Amen! I absolutely love this song so so much
She's missing the rest of the instrumentation because she was stepping up to keep the show going after a sound check failure. The audience was expecting Stevie Wonder and got a relatively unknown performer with just her guitar.
I saw her opening for 10,000 Maniacs less than 6 months before this was recorded: it was only her and her guitar. Her first album had little, if any, other instrumentation.
And that was the performance that made her. Nobody noticed her until that performance.
Probably the best reaction to fast car I’ve seen
“Talking about a revolution” is way up your alley
I felt the same way. Too many others don't take the time to really hear what the words convey.
My fave song by her is this one.
The live version is amazing. Her first time playing for more than 300 people. 70,000 people, including princess Diana were there to watch was supposed to be a side performance. She blew everyone away with her lyrics and true voice.
I literally cannot listen to this song without weeping. One of the greatest songs ever written. Her delivery in this performance is particularly moving. And the emotion in those beautiful eyes of hers is stuning.
When that song came on the radio when I was a kid. I was so drawn to it because it was very unique from anything else. I still feel drawn to it for the same reason today.
Same I heard it on the radio at a young age and was completely drawn in by her voice/style. Now that I'm 25 I still to love this song
@@avvalyn9 ...I was 13 when this song hit....I'm 46 now....music transcends time....
Same I was in the backseat being taken to school the first time I heard it and it stuck with me instantly
Me too
I was already a young adult but it just electrified me. Love Tracy.
The most amazing part of this video is that she performed earlier in the day to a much smaller crowd. Stevie Wonder was set to perform but the device with his music was missing, so they found Tracy and got her to perform again to the full crowd of 100,000 people. Her album skyrocketed after their performance. Beautiful song with a beautiful story
I remember watching the broadcast of the final show of the Amnesty International tour. The final show I think. Was in Buenos Aires. The other artists were Youssou n'dour, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen in a huge stadium. They all had big bands and Tracy came out solo with her acoustic and had 100,000 people eating out of her hand.
Thanks for the info!
Thank God for that serendipitous equipment issue. We might not have heard of her otherwise. The radio play she got sent her album straight into my hands and gave me something to hold onto.
When you think about it, how brave was she?? To have someone be like, “These 100,000 people were expecting a legend to perform, but they can’t get here, so can you go out with just your guitar?” But it was like fate, and I’m happy for her that it could happen!
Great Intel, soldier. Thanks You. *Salutes*
This is one of the best songs ever written. Tracy draws you in with her voice and lyrics.
The insightfulness of your reactions is a joy to watch. Thank you.
She broke the cycle by the end...
Her mother left, left her dad and left her, to find a better life.
But faced with the same situation, she told the person to leave. She "ain't goin' nowhere". She made a good life for her and her children despite that person, and if anybody's gotta go, it won't be her.
Impossible for me to hear this song without tearing up. The way the verses recontextualize the chorus is genius.
Same
When this came out, I was a senior in high school in a small, poor, rural town and every word just rang painfully true. Everyone loved this song - didn't matter what or who you were into at the time. Still love the song and still hear the truth in her lyrics. Fantastic choice!
This song is brilliant, for me it rang true in high school and throughout my adult life - she is wise beyond her years.
You really nailed the analysis of this song, especially about the chorus feeling different after every verse. Powerful song.
R.I.P Mom ill never forget when I was a child and her playing this entire album while she'd clean the house and every time this song played it'd bring tears to her eyes and I always wondered how it connected with her I never asked but now she's passed away I think about her alot and now I know why the tears were projected from this amazing heart felt song! Much love to Tracy Chapman and miss you Mom!! 😢
Listen to how quiet that huge audience is, listening and giving her respect.
Tears every damn time.
I am born 1993 and named after her :)
She was and still is quite famous here in Germany as well. And I dont even think my parents fully understood what she was singing...
I've loved this song since it came out. I can relate as my mother left my alcoholic father and her children when I was just turning 12. I was the only girl and had to take over the housekeeping and cooking for my dad and brothers. I know first hand the cycle of dysfunction.
As a semi-ok songwriter, this is the kind of song that turns all the lights on. The muse starts speaking. Time to write. She is amazing.
If I could write just one verse as perfect as this entire song, that would be the accomplishment of a lifetime.
What a humble brag. Lol
Tracy Chapman has the most unique voice and ability to tell a story. This song speaks volumes and about and to kids growing up in poverty and/or hopelessness. It matters not what shade of skin you have, these feelings are real and the potential for repeating the choices of your parents is great. I identified with this song as a teen, but thank God that I was able to change my circumstances. Many of my siblings made different choices and the life they live reflects that for them and their children and grandchildren. It is heartbreaking!
I have also watched this play out in my community. It is very sad to watch this sort of thing run through an entire family! GOD bless
Maybe your siblings just aren't as materialistic as you lady
@@CapnWack , I am not referring to material things. Reading for content and meaning is important. Tracy Chapman wasn’t talking about material things, either. Poverty of spirit and hopelessness can happen at any income level, but she was referring to generational mistakes and poverty. I think your chip is showing 😉.
She is so underrated! Beautiful songwriter, storyteller, and singer. Every time I here her I am amazed all over again.
She is magic even as she makes me cry. Try Last Night I Heard the Screaming. It hurts.
wish people stop using this word underrated..where is the bar if its over or under? she made a fair amount of revenue from her career..what else do we need
She's not underrated. She has four grammys.
To add on to the comments about this performance-- the crowd didn't know who she was. Notice the chanting as she starts. Notice it get quiet as she goes. This was literally the moment a star was born. The universe gave her an opportunity, and she literally walked out on stage and had every artists dream come true. This story along with the nostalgia for my dad attached to this song makes me emotional every time I hear it.
I agree with your analysis of the song. She’s hoping they can build a good life together in the beginning, but he turns out to be like her father. She finds herself in the same dysfunctional situation she was in before. She’s still breaking the cycle for herself and her kids a bit, though, because she’s telling him that he needs to decide to get better or leave. She’s staying where she is with her job that pays all of the bills and their kids. He can go. She’s keeping what she built by herself, and she’s not leaving her kids in that situation like her own mother left her.
I have listened to this song since it came out, and love it as much today as I did back then. As someone else already mentioned, “Give Me One Reason” is also an amazingly good song of hers.
I think the key is the switch from "We gotta make a decision" to "You gotta make a decision." She had hoped he would lift her up. Instead, he held her back. She is recognizing the few successes she has had (low-paying job, but it pays the bills) and has realized that she is done with codependency.
Baby Can I Hold You, this has been covered a lot of other artists. Another is Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution.
Baby Can I Hold You is SO good!
Yea, nicky minaj tried to copy that
Give Me One Reason is awesome too
This song came out at around the same time I had just experienced a terrible, traumatizing event. I was in the Army, far from family, melting down. My friend took me on a drive from Monterey to San Francisco in her Trans Am, and we drove with the windows all the way down, and it was the first time I heard this song. I wept.
She is brilliant and I've loved her music for years. This song is about 1 person, her, and about everyone as well. The surprise for me in the end is her realization that she's repeated her families pattern of roles and behavior but with a different conclusion, she's staying and he can go. A personal story and for everyman.
At a packed out Wembley Stadium. Probably 100,000 + people in the crowd
And it was broadcast live in many places around the world.
IIRC this is her filling time unplanned at live aid for an audience that was expecting Stevie Wonder!
Its amazing that this song is 33 years old.
Throughout the years, with every heart break in my life, this song makes me tear up and give me the hope to dust off and keep moving along. Great song. Now I need another Kleenex. Sniff.
Tracy Chapman is an amazing storyteller. Everything she does gives me chills.
My science teacher in high-school was a huge tracy fan but I was dumb and didn't get it, thought it was dumb. as I grew up I truly learned to appreciate how brilliant this song was
One of the most unique voices I've ever heard. This song is one of the greatest songs ever.
Saw her on the steps of Cambridge library taking money in her guitar case, and later headlining a music festival. Brilliant both times!
You noticed how the crowd quieted down from the start of the song to listen to her. She is amazing.
This whole album is a masterpiece. Worth checking out.
She had another huge hit in the 90s, sort of a modern blues classic, very different from this but still really cool. Called "give me one reason"
My favorite by her !
she did a version of "Gimme me one reason" with Eric Clapton. it is fire!
@@WendyCranmer ohhhh I so want to hear that!! Thanks!
You say the chorus changes every time even though the words are the same, it’s literally her going from hopeful and optimistic, to regret and heartbreak that she finds herself back in the situation she was running from, then in the end you hear her strength and resolve to not continue to repeat the same pattern, this song is genius and one of my favorites, because it tells the story of so many, it’s so heartbreaking and hopeful and regretful and tragic all at the same time, and she just breaks your heart with her voice and story, it’s truly one of the best songs ever 🥲💕
Tracy Chapman and Luciano Pavarotti sing Baby Can I Hold You. It’s beautiful!
Always loved this song and felt the hurt every time. As they say, hurt people hurt people. Cycles are hard things to break.
Performed in 1988 at a tribute to Nelson Mandela in a stadium packed with an audience of 75000+ in my hometown of Wembley (London) I was 16 years old
Her impromptu performance to fill for Stevie wonder being unable to perform at that time only further magnifies her brilliance. Her performance, your breakdown and that event all🔥
This still hits me as hard as it did in my teenage years. Tracy quietly disappeared because she wouldn't play the music industry's game! She's a Legend!!
I've been a Tracy Chapman fan for many years
Everyone listens to Fast Car, and absolutely it is brilliant. I loved your breakdown of it. There is so much more though. It would be so refreshing to hear a reactor do some of her others too. Across the Lines, Talkin’ Bout a Revolution, Behind the Wall, Crossroads….would love to hear your thoughts on some of those if you enjoyed this one.
For my lover is great too...
Across The Lines is very touching too! It's one of my favorite.
I grew up listening to this amazing woman thanks too my mom who sadly passed. She was a huge fan and so am I ❤
If I may suggest, "Baby Can I Hold You" is another really great song with such raw emotion!
One of the greatest songs ever
All these years and this song still gives me chills as the tears flow
This was one of the first songs I *had* to learn on guitar and still play everyday. This was the #1 song in 1987/88 when MJ’s Bad was all over the radio too. So happy you reacted and appreciate your response.
Remember cruising around In my 87 Grand National with my wife stomping the crap outta Vettes and 5.0 junkstangs speeds so fast felt like we were drink listening to this song. Late 80s some good music. And some not so much lol.
I waited in her in the 90’s. She was sweet as can be. I felt so lucky to meet her:)
Can't believe u've never heard this puts chills up my spine brilliant tune
Loved her since the 80s when I was a child! Never grow tired of her and have listened to her throughout my life! Her music resonates with so many on various levels...signs of pure genius!
Amazing, you're the first reactor I've heard make that distinction about the chorus. It VERY MUCH so feels different as the song progresses. Great ear!
“Across the lines” 💯🔥
I second this, across the line is deep
"Just take your fast car and keep on driving" is the best line.
Listen to all her music. She’s amazing.
I absolutely love this song -- it evokes emotion in me that I have a hard time explaining. The lyrics are quite direct, but still, there's something hidden, a deeper meaning amongst the words. And the repeating guitar line is just perfect into the change that punctuates it all.
I associate this song with a family vacation we went on when it was popular. My sister and I were driving through the mountains down to town to go see a movie and I was telling my sister the song lyrics weren’t an excuse to speed.
HAHAHA, that says so much about the difference in your personalities
Never really listened and understood the words to this song when I was young, but didn’t mind the sound of her voice and the beat. BUT after your great reaction and section by section review, I can now fully understand the true meaning behind this CLASSIC song, so thx.
Tracey chapman best female singer EVER 😍😍😍😍
React to "Talkin' Bout A Revolution." Trust me, you'll love every second of it!
This!
“Baby Can I Hold You” is in the realm of “Fast Car”. Go for that one
She was my rock. She was HOPE.
Good analogy of her song. I loved Tracy’s song in the 80’s and love it now. I was speechless watching her and Luke sing it at the Grammy’s. Tracy was glowing and sounded better than ever, and it was easy to see that Luke has so much admiration for her, the way he looked at her during their performance. Their voices blended so well together. They were a show stopper! Just wondered what you thought. ❤
This song comes on and instantly I can feel myself in the passenger seat of an old beat up land yacht, windows down, sometime after 10 pm, warm, humid wind blowing through my hair, just cruising without destination.... I love her voice and I love this song.
Your not over reaching. This songs is genius and so beautiful. It never fails to get an emotional reaction from me. I love how she has more character development in this brief song than entire seasons of TV shows. She is a master of her craft.
Tracy Chapman is one of the best underrated artists of the last 3 decades. YES please listen to all of her New Beginning tracks…🙏👏👏💪💪💪👏👏👏💥💥💥❤️👍👍👍
The main point to this song is HOPE. She never loses hope that it will get better. While continually realizing the need for change. Sad but so inspiring.
This and Give Me One Reason are both classics 🖤
Really great reaction 🖤
This song was huge world wide when I was 7 or 8. We had a Samoan teacher used to play it on his guitar and we would all sing along with him. This was in New Zealand. Seems weird given the content but it was a different time.
Love ❤️ her. Her music 🎶 is fantastic.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song, the poignant way she tells the story blew me away. I agree that the whole album is phenomenal - can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listened to it. Think I’ll go do that now - thank you!
Amazing how that huge audience is immediately captivated by her. She is amazing and I loved her when she first came out of nowhere.
It is absolutely a genius song and you nailed the breakdown. Tracy Chapman is a genius great storyteller great songwriter there's many more that you should be listening to and reacting to if not reacting to you should be listening to her anyways... Just my two cents. Thank you for what you do :-)
One of the most beautiful performances of one of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded.
Tracey is brilliant storyteller her voice is unique. Love her
You should listen to COLD FEET by Tracy Chapman...it's from the same album, but highly underrated IMO.
Agreed.. that is an amazing song
Pretty sure 'Cold Feet' is from her album 'New Beginning', but it is a great song. 'Mountains O' Things' from her debut is also a deep song once you deconstruct it. As are most of her compositions.
When this came out I listened to mostly metal and rock but I could not deny this is such a great song and I've ALWAYS loved it from the first time I heard it 🙂
Give Me One Reason will always lurk in the back of my mind. Tracy's style is absolutely beautiful.
Not over reaching. She is a brilliant story teller. Brilliant artist. And THAT VOICE! Patsy Cline and Tracey Chapman.
I am subscribing in the hopes that you will bring Tracy Chapman more exposure to a modern audience. She has been my muse and a panacea to every broken moment in my life. Every song of hers contains the level of gravitas Fast Car has. Thank you for this video.
This is a classic, timeless. Love this one, thank you for reacting to this. Great job as always!
Tracy Chapman is Beautiful.
She’s a masterclass in songwriting and emotional performances.
Give me one reason
I love her voice, and storytelling, that crowd at that concert was crazy
Freedom is a Highway. Yes she is a absolutely gifted woman.
recognized by me....hehehe... so tracy is the star! tracy is the star.....look at her! i love her ... over the ocean...where a pit of water is salty
Even if just for yourself give “the promise” a listen. Beautiful song.
Best reaction I have seen to this song. You picked up the difference between the "leave tonight or live and die this way" verse, how it meant something totally different at the beginning than it did at the end. At the beginning it meant "we can leave" and start on our journey to improve our lives. At the end, it meant "you can leave" because their goals were not the same, and she could not be the person she wanted to be when encumbered with this person.
Heard it a 100 times, stunning tone of her voice and a great storyteller. There's something about an individual with a guitar. Very naked and brave. Especially this one.
she is perfection like no question she was and always be great
