I found this helpful on so many levels. When artists share their own growth and processes generously it means a lot!!

I enjoyed seeing your early journals. I have journal pages in the 1000 Journal Pages book, pages 246, 247, and 248. I sent her six photos taken with my son's digital camera. I didn't have one at the time. She used them all.

I use Pinterest for my inspiration, you have a much wider selection of styles and ai knows what sort of style you like and brings more of that sort of style. I’ve found many a favourite artist and art style this way, and I have really gained a good idea of what I like and what I can apply to my own art practice.

Thanks so muck for the video and peek into your transformation as an artist. You were extremely talented from the beginning and I completely adore the faces in your first book. They were so simple yet so expressive. I think they're charming. My family and friends are always complimenting me on my art but I'm quick to dismiss it because I'm not where I want to be artistically. They see the beauty of what I actually created while I see the deviations from what I intended to create. Maybe that's the artist curse.

It is so difficult to translate what we see in our heads to the page and be happy with the result, isn't it? I struggle with that every day. I agree that it's a type of curse and though I've seen many videos on how to break that cycle, I haven't found success so far.

This was a great idea. I have a couple of the books you showed. I recently went in the backyard with some watercolor pages (a full watercolor sheet divided and torn into 16 same sized pieces) and just sketched small vignettes that I saw; then, colored it in with a new travel watercolor pan set. It was fun and colorful and wonky but I like what I did. I found I was putting colors on a separate page; then, mixing them which led me to finding color combinations that I had a big reaction to. For instance, I loved burnt sienna and viridian mixed together. I'm going to do a series of small pages using just those two colors. It's a lot of fun. ❤

Thanks for the personal color pallet tip. I think I've naturally started limiting my colors, but I can also see how I've been frustrated by trying to include too many. Will give a try purposely seeing what my favorites are and keeping them as a "base". Simplifying. Thanks again.

Thanks for the great video and tips! For sure i think i will make note of my 'preferred' colors and point myself in that direction. I am very drawn to the faces... and am hoping you might can advise me about the 'shadowy water color affect ' you pointed out which you want to do more of . I need to do more work with faces too, and would like to try that technique.

I thoroughly enjoyed your video. It's really well done. It is filled with your wealth of experience, advice, and talent. On our way toward artistic greatness 😉😁, it's definitely okay to trace and/or copy; it's one of the practices used by student artists for centuries. It's an effective learning tool, not to mention fun! Learning is not done in a vacuum. We just can't publicly claim the work as our own, as you explained well. (I did notice, in the second curated book, that an artist from outside the US presented her art as her own, but was so close an imitation that, at first, I thought they were by a Portland, Oregon artist (with whom I am familiar)-- right down to the use of his personal symbols.) Anyhoo... I'm sure that doesn't happen often. Journal books or similar sketchbooks are fun and intimate places to practice, and to find our own styles.

You give great advice to people who are trying to find their style. Off to check out more of your videos. 😊 PS That Jason Thompson book kicked it all off for me back in the day! I used to go to Artfest.

Thank you for this! I found a couple of the doodle book on a used website. I am really struggling to create my own palette. I have looked back thru my art journal and nothing is really standing out to me as a common thread…..I do know that I want to move a little away from my collage style into something different. Less collage style and more background with a focal point. BUT, I’m finding the color palette daunting and overwhelming.

Find others that you like. Look around at other artists and find the palettes that you like. Or easier, pick 3 colors and start there.

Thanks for this! Some great ideas I can’t wait to try. But I’m not sure why you keep putting down your early faces! Aren’t they just a different expression of a face, rather than one being better or worse? I get that you like your later ones better, but I think your earlier ones have their own charm😊
