I also can't recommend enough the amazing film Batman Mask of the Phantasm which is considered by comic book fans to be the greatest Batman film ever made. No other Batman movie dives as deep into the characters psyche as that movie does. It also has the definitive Batman and Joker with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

Since you weren't familiar with the extended Bat Family, here are the most prevalent members:
Dick Grayson is the first Robin but later he wanted to step out of Batman's shadow and became Nightwing (he is my favourite comic book character ever by the way). He and his parents were circus acrobats known as the Flying Graysons. After a mobster extorting money from their circus had cut the lines of the ropes they used for their act, Dick's parents fell to their deaths in front of their 8 year old son. Dick was later adopted by Bruce Wayne who was also in the audience and understood the pain of losing his parents and wanted Dick to not be consumed by anger and so trained him to become the first Robin the age of 8 and later became Nightwing in his late teens. He's now in his mid to late 20s. He is the one Batman has the most intimate bond with because he is his adopted son and was raised by him as if he was his own.
Barbara Gordon is the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon and later becomes Batgirl. She became Batgirl when she was a teenager because she was inspired by Batman and Robin and wanted to protect people. Years later she was shot through the spine by the joker and became paralysed so she became Oracle. Eventually she got better in the comics (don't ask how) and became Batgirl again. Barbara and Dick Grayson are in a relationship. Barbara is currently around her mid-20s.
The second Robin is Jason Todd. Jason was the son of a pretty criminal working for Two-Face and a drug addicted mother and grew up in poverty in Gotham. At the age of 12, Batman caught Jason trying to steal the tires from the Batmobile. He was impressed with Jason's braveness and decided to take him in and train him as Robin. Jason did not have the cheerful personality of Dick Grayson and often showed to have a lot of repressed anger. He was eventually murdered by the Joker at the age of 15. Later he was resurrected (the details are very complicated and convoluted) by Talia al Ghul (one of Batman's greatest loves) and became the vigilante Red Hood Which was the alias joker used before falling in a vat of acid. He is now around his early 20s.
The third and best Robin is Tim Drake (he's my favourite Robin but Dick Grayson as Nightwing is my favourite character). Tim Drake was only a toddler when he was there in the audience to witness the death of Dick Graysons acrobat parents known as the Flying Graysons after a mobster extorting money from their circus had cut the lines of the ropes they used for their act and fell to their deaths in front of their 8 year old son. Dick was later adopted by Bruce Wayne who was also in the audience and understood the pain of losing his parents. Tim was a massive fan of Batman and Robin and always looked up to them growing up. Tim is the smartest person in the Bat Family and at the age of 13 he used his own self-taught detective skills to figure out Batman and Nightwing's identities. After Jason Todd's death, Batman had become more violent and after Tim noticed he told Batman that he had figured out who he was and that Batman needed a Robin to remind him of what he stood for. Tim asked Dick Grayson to become Robin again but Dick refused and told him that he should be the one to do it. Tim accepted and after months of training the world's greatest martial artist Lady Shiva (who is one of the assassins in Arkham Origins), he earned the right to become the third Robin. He is now about 16 years old.
The fourth Robin is Stephanie Brown. Stephanie Brown is the daughter of the Cluemaster, one of Gotham City third-rate villains. To ruin his schemes, she became the vigilante Spoiler. Stephanie's father Cluemaster spent most of her childhood in prison or away from the family. Though he claimed to be "rehabilitated" upon his return to Gotham, Stephanie was furious to discover that he was actually returning to crime without his need to leave clues behind. She decided something needed to be done. Stephanie tailored a costume for herself, and called herself the Spoiler. She knew where her father was hiding out, found out his plans, and left clues so that the police and Batman could stop him. Robin (Tim Drake) tracked her down, and she joined in on the capturing of Cluemaster. She also became attracted to Robin, and it annoyed her that he knew her identity but she did not know his. Eventually Tim and Stephanie fell in love.Stephanie also began a friendship with Batgirl Cassandra Cain (who was Batgirl when Barbara was paralysed). After Tim had to stop being Robin for personal reasons for a bit, Stephanie volunteered to be Robin. After Stephanie disobeyed Batman's orders (in order to save his life), Batman later fired her and told her that she was done being a hero because he could not trust her in the field.
Cassandra Cain was Batgirl after Barbara Gordon. Born with the assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva (the woman who trained Tim Drake) as her parents, she was trained to become the perfect warrior. Her father deprived her of speech so she would learn movement and physicality as her first languages. She is not taught to read or write and instead, reading body language is her only language. When she is 8, her father takes her to kill a businessman. As the man dies, Cassandra reads what he is feeling, realizes what she did, and runs away from her father. Batman adopted her into the Bat Family. Cassandra would eventually turn her Batgirl costume over to Stephanie Brown, Cassandra has since gone I want to use the names Black Bat and Orphan.
Damian Wayne is the fifth Robin. Damian is the biological son of Batman and Talia al Ghul. Sometime after Batman became a public hero, he fought Ra's al Ghul (pronounced Raysh) and the League of Assassins. During his adventure, he met Ra's' daughter Talia al Ghul. The two young adults fell for each other and, after a brief fling, they conceived a child. Bruce was unaware of the child's conception and returned to crime fighting for years. Damian was intended to be a formidable warrior. Raised by his other Talia and the League of Assassins, Damian became a talented martial artist by the time he was a pre-teen. Eventually, when Talia deemed that Damian after turning 10 years old was ready, she allowed him to go to Gotham and meet his father - the Batman. Batman was surprised to learn he had a secret son with a supervillain but sought to learn more about the boy anyway. Despite his intense training to become a remorseless assassin, Damian was sympathetic to his father's vigilantism in Gotham and volunteered to become his next sidekick. Batman agreed and granted Damian the mantle of Robin.

This movie is one of the rare cases where they actually do better than the source material.
The original comic reasoning for how Jason came back to life was super messy, and involved characters in the larger DC universe.
Here they kept most all the important details but whittled it down to using characters native to Batman stories so it’s far more clear and concise.
Bruce Greenwood is probably my second favorite Batman voice actor behind Kevin Conroy. They both have a similar way of portraying Batman as a man confident in his abilities and blunt, without leaning into some gimmick like a raspy voice, or guttural growls like the Nolan movies. Jenson Ackles has been voicing Batman in the new animated movies they’ve been making. He’s not bad but not really my fave personally. He’s outstanding as Jason in this movie though.

This is much closer to Jason’s story in the comics than Arkham Knight was, but the ways it was changed make sense. He can’t be mad at Batman for not killing the Joker when the Joker is already dead in the game & furthermore many people believe that Batman is responsible. So Jason’s resentment is made to be about psychological conditioning through torture & his replacement by Tim. Ironically though, Batman does pretty much try to kill the Joker after Jason’s death in the comics. Superman stops him because the Joker becomes- wait for it- an ambassador to Iran. Don’t ask, comics are just weird sometimes.

So about crime alley. Bruce was there during the anniversary of his parents death. That’s why he parked there in the first place. Quite interesting that he met Jason the same place AND on the anniversary of his parent’s death. The flashback kinda touches on that. If you reallyyyyy want to add salt to the wound.. I suggest reading Robin’s 80th Anniversary in “More Time”. It’s really devastating.. and sweet. It shows how their relationship is strained but there’s no doubt that they still love each other. Even after everything that’s happened. Jason may criticize Batman but he could never truly hate the man who gave him everything he’s ever lost. Remember that often hatred is often born from a place of love. “There’s layers to it”. That can also be applied to Jason’s sentiments.. And as to why he wants Bruce to end Joker. Think about it. Why didn’t Jason just do it? Why did he want Bruce to avenge him? Jason never once blamed Bruce for his death in comics. Bruce assumed he was mad about dying but that wasn’t the case at all… “He took me away from you.” It’s a lot deeper imo when you know the context of Jason’s past before he met Batman. His parents didn’t get along very well and he lost his father and ended up taking care of his mother. Only to lose her from the drug addiction. Some iterations in comics explain that it was meds that she got addicted to. Others she simply had an addiction. Point is, despite them loving Jason he wasn’t prioritized in the end. He wasn’t protected… I’ll stop there haha. It’s alottttt I can go on and on about it. The thing about Jason and Bruce is that they were simply the perfect storm. They often bump heads because of their differences in background. This is prior to his death as well. Think back on “no dealing to children” and “.. he’s a drug dealing PIMP.” Unlike the rest of Bruce’s kids, Jason is a Gothamite. He was born and raised in the poorest areas of Gotham City. While Bruce was born into money.

Someone already mentioned a series of the bat kids had they not met Bruce. I simply wanted to add something else. There WAS already an instance written before but it wasn’t focusing on the bat kids. It was a timeline/alternate worlds storyline. I forgot the name of the comic but someone travels into a different timeline where Bruce died instead of his parents. We start the chapter with a familiar face. And it’s Jason Todd. Since Bruce died he never met Bruce. Everyone was shocked and devastated to see Jason being a priest. He was living happily and healthy even. Isn’t that gut wrenching?? Ofc this is a different parallel world but it still hurts a lot to think about

Possibly the best animated Batman film out there, I still get choked up near the end when Red Hood comes clean and explains his reasoning for wanting the Joker dead more than anything, only for Batman to admit how easy it would be to simply kill the Joker, but that if he did, he'd never be able to stop himself from killing again.
    SPOILERS BELOW
(The whole exchange between Jason Todd & Batman is just so masterfully written)
JASON: Is that what you think this is about!? That you failed me? That you let me die? I don't know what clouds your judgement worse, your guilt or your antiquated sense of morality... Bruce, I forgive you for not saving me. But why, why on God's Earth... IS HE STILL ALIVE?!
JOKER: Gotta give the boy points! He came all the way back from the dead to make this shindig happen! So, who's got a camera? Ooh, ooh! Get one of me and the kid first! Then you and me, then the three of us, and then one with the crowbar, then-
JASON: You'll be as quiet as possible, or I'll put one in your lap first
JOKER: Party pooper. No cake for you
JASON: Ignoring what he's done in the past, blindly, stupidly disregarding the entire graveyards he's filled, the thousands who have suffered, the friends he's crippled...! You know, I thought... I thought I'd be the last person you'd ever let him hurt. If it had been you that he beat to a bloody pulp, if he had taken you from this world, I would've done nothing but search the planet for this pathetic pile of evil, death-worshiping garbage... and send him off to hell!
BATMAN: You don't understand... I don't think you've ever understood
JASON: What? What, your moral code just won't allow for that? It's too hard to cross that line?BATMAN: No! God Almighty, no. It'd be too damned easy. All I've ever wanted to do is kill him. A day doesn't go by when I don't think about subjecting him to every horrendous torture he's dealt out to others, and then... end him
JOKER: Awwww. So you do think about me
BATMAN: But if I do that... if I allow myself to go down into that place... I'll never come back
JASON: Why? I'm not talking about killing Penguin or Scarecrow or Dent. I'm talking about him... just him. And doing it because... because he took me away from you
    BATMAN: I can't. I'm sorry
😢😢😢 Goddamn powerful stuff, and the way Jason's voice breaks a little there near the end, clearly fighting back his own sadness... just brilliant

22:21 FYI in the Comic this was adapting Batman DID want to kill Joker. The problem was that after killing Jason, Joker became the ambassador of Iran. Killing him would've been an international incident so the president basically begged Superman to stop Batman from doing it.
P.S. this was left out of the movie because it probably wouldn't have made sense to anyone unfamiliar with the story but, Jason's mom was in the room watching as Joker beat up Jason. She didn't even try to help, she died in the explosion as well.
EDIT: Batman never told Jason about how he tried to kill Joker. He'd rather Jason just keep hating him.
BTW Jason kinda proved Batman right in the sense that If you kill someone you'll just keep finding reasons to kill because Jason killed a bunch of grunts and criminals before he even touched Joker in the this movie alone.

-- On a real note though - after Kevin Conroy's passing, the worry I felt for whomever had to fill Bat-shaped shoes was palpable. No one other than the amazing Adam West had garnered so much love for their time as Batman - and both will be missed dearly.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it a million times. The slippery slope reasoning usually given for why Batman doesn’t kill is dumb. He should just believe in rehabilitation and the sanctity of life and then stand steadfast on those beliefs, but for some reason that’s “not cool”

  • @nightmareman9960

One of the more fked up things about Jason’s death is because it was chosen by a poll by fans 😅😅😅😅
Batman alway did try even in Arkham to save Jason but he didn’t make it in time. The main reason why Jason was so mad at bats is because he thought that he was important enough to Bruce that he would break his no kill rule to make sure the joker couldn’t take a son from anyone ever again.
But bats didn’t kill the joker so Jason thought that Bruce didn’t care about him and simply used him
10:15 the beginning of the film was a flashback my man
I also love how cool the origin of Jason and even Tim was.
Jason was taken in by Batman because Batman found him stealing the wheels of the Batmobile. Somehow a 10yo homeless kid was able to remove all the wheels on a nuclear multimillion dollar car that has survived rocket launchers 😂😂😂
Then you got Tim Drake that was so smart that he broke into the bat cave after he worked out on his own the identity of the entire bat family.
15:00 Tbf Batman didn’t know he was alive seeing that he confirmed his death himself that’s why he was also verifying that he was alive even thou he was 95% sure he was alive

There never was a right answer to who's right between batman and red hood.
Red hood is right with the fact that some criminals deserve to die to save 100 innocent lives. But Batman is all about not loosing control.
You can easily see both sides and that is the best part of red hood stories. He never wanted to kill batman he always wanted to be a better batman that will get gotham clean of criminals.
What many people assume wrong is that Arkham Knight is not Red Hood story. Jason becomes Red Hood there as well but it is not the same story. That is why Arkham Knight over all had such a bad review upon its release (other than batmobile over use and poor pc performance).
Glad you enjoyed the movie and really enjoyed reviewing my favourite character with my favourite actor playing him even if it wasn't a full thing cause... we all know how it is with posting full movies :P
