    While this is an old video, the info was most helpful. Perlite and Zip Loc bag method is the way to go when you have 100's of daylily seeds. As you mention, be VERY careful to not apply too much water. Doing so will almost surely result is something growing inside the bag and it won't be a daylily... scary...!! Thanks for the video.. wish I could post photo :)
    One other thing.... I tried using a really small bag 2" x 3" and that does NOT work well.... the larger sandwich size bags are great....

    Thanks for watching, I have two emails about starting seeds.
    1.) How would this method work on sprouting tomato seeds?
    Answer 1.) I would use a papertowel instead of perlite in the ziploc bag. Still use the solution mix in bottle of water. Soak the towel in the solution sprinkle seeds onto towel and fold towel into fours. leave in warm room or by window. Make sure to seal bag. Check on seeds in 4-5 days. They may be sprouting by then.
    2.) Having a hard time with hosta seeds i purchased on ebay. Can you help me?
    Answer 2.) You need to ask the seller if the seeds were put through a cold period or were chilled in the fridge for 30-45 days before they shipped them to you. Seeds from hostas typically must go through cold stratification to go dormant. Then once warmed and watered after that period there should be no reason why they wont grow if viable. You can use our daylily sprouting method on the hosta seeds as well.

    I harvested day lily seeds this year I have them in the fridge now.. this is awesome. I also harvested Cana lily seed this year, I wonder if this same method will work for them, I am gonna try!

  • @TRUMP_WAS_RIGHT_ABOUT_EVRYTHNG

    Great video! Thanks for the simple instructions 👍. I've got a couple hundred Lilly plants in my gardens . And I've been harvesting seeds over the last few years. I will attempt to grow from seed this week. I've got a few hundred seeds to play with. I started with about 12 plants that I got from my grandfather and they're over 35 years old. Every fall over the last 7 years I split and split and now they're everywhere . Think I have 8 different varieties. I am going to attempt cross breeding this summer. See if I can make some super Lilly 😂

    You can do all this just fine without perlite and whatever you are doing. I've never had a problem with anything I do. Nothing about these lily bulbils are specific, ok. Sometimes I even frigerate these for awhile and then plant them. And you can even dust them a little with root hormone and they grow even faster and better.

    Hi- my grandfather grew daylillies. He died in 2006.My grandmother recently passed and I found seeds he had stored in old medicine bottles in a dark, dry, temp controlled cabinet years ago. Like 11 years ago. Do you think I have any chance of starting these? If so, what is my first step?

      jennifer schaefer, hey Jennifer, that's amazing that you found those and would be very beautiful if you could get them to grow, I'm not sure if they would or not but I did grow a beautiful rudbeckia prairie sun from seeds that were roughly 8 years old so there could be a chance, you would most likely need to stratify the seeds before they would sprout in the freezer for a few weeks, I like to germinate seeds on damp cotton pads covered by a glass left on a sunny windowsill and have had great luck with that, so you could try a few that way, maybe do a few more in soil with a plastic covering

    Should you put the bag in the fridge or not? You mentioned the fridge early on then you said to keep the temp around 70 degrees.

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  Před 10 lety +4

      keep in fridge until it is time to plant. If you are harvesting seeds from the pod. Wait a day for them to air dry and then store them in the fridge without anything on them (just as they are) for a period of 4 weeks. After 4 weeks you can try this sprouting technique. Once you are trying to grow the seeds (sprout) this is when the temp should be 70 degrees farenheit (steady) Hope this helps Joe!

    hi! how do you collect the seeds? i bought a plant and i want to know how.

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  Před 8 lety +1

      I would buy one more plant. Make sure if you have a Diploid or a Tetraploid that you buy the same kind. Then when they are flowering you take the pollen from one and add it to the pistol of the other. You will get a seed pod and after about 30 days the seed pod will start to crack open. collect the seeds and let them dry out on a counter top overnight. place them in the fridge for 3 weeks. Then you are ready to sprout and grow them!

    • @lheiser2
      @lheiser2 Před 3 lety

      After the bloom the stalk will grow a pod. Wait until they turn brown. Then pick. You should also cut some stalks after blooming to keep the plant blooming more flowers through the summer.

  • @joeBishop866
    @joeBishop866 Před rokem

    I just can't believe Daylilies grow from seeds. I've tried everything I can find on the internet, and planted about 1500 seeds without ever getting a single plant. You have to grow them from expensive roots, because seeds simply will not sprout.

  • @josephdupont
    @josephdupont Před 4 lety +3

    You mentioned the refrigerator in the beginning of your video once again I want to not once again I want to thank you though that showing this this system I picked up a bunch of seeds from McDonald's that all kinds of the Stella Dora flowers and I also bought some actually some plants from me a nursery and when I broke them out of the carton I had probably about 40 or 50 plants all bundled together in that plastic container so we would have stunted your growth so I have them all separated now in the ground and I expect I expect him to do very well and you want a multiplication but anyhow if you can mention something about the refrigerator will that I know you do that with apple seeds it helps them germinate I don't know about these

    Typically, will dailily seeds purchased commercially need to be refrigerated before trying your growing method? Will the seeds fail to germinate if they are not refrigerated before sowing?

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  Před 8 lety +1

      Yes, that's why if it isn't stated I would ask if they have gone through cold stratification already. They probably wont sprout unless they have gone through a cold period.

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  Před 9 lety

      SuperKaterTot *yes you can, if your seeds were harvested this year they will need cold stratification first. 1. collect seeds 2. let seeds dry out for atleast 24 hours. 3. store them in a fridge for 3-4 weeks. Seeds should be ready for sprouting afterwards.*

    Green house effect - place somewhere warm then 1:00 all we need is a refrigerator ? Make no sense! Also, why do we need peroxide how does it help a s what does perlite do to the seeds and can it be replaced - no idea. Also could there be a delay in making this video at least until the rain passed or made in a different non-metal roof room? Sigh.

    Sir, I have watched all your videos on starting daylily seeds. I have made some very expensive purchases of seeds this week and must ensure best results. You have ignored two previous comments regarding the strength of the Hydrogen Peroxide used in your video. Without this vital information, the proses is doomed, as too weak a solution has no effect and too strong a solution damages the seeds. I am going for broke and ask you again for the percentage solution you used. Without this information we cannot use the advice you supply from knowledge you gained over 15+ years!

    • @mygardenchannel
      @mygardenchannel  Před 9 lety +3

      +Leon Jordaan There is no exact percentage. As I have mentioned in the past and as the video shows exactly what to do. We use a cap full of the HP and dump into a 16 oz bottle of water. There is no exact measurement that we do.

    • @leonjordaan9056
      @leonjordaan9056 Před 9 lety +2

      +First Class Gardens When buying HP the purchased product will come as either 3%, 6%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 35% and even higher percentage values. It should be easy to understand that the higher the percentage, the stronger the product. Mixing a cap full of 3% with your 16 oz bottle of water will give a much weaker solution than mixing a cap full of 35%. What we wanted to know, and we still do, was what percentage did you purchase to use that one cap full for your solution. As you clearly stated a too strong mixture will damage the seeds and too weak has no effect. I am not referring to your percentage mixed solution. I am referring to your purchased HP percentage. It should be depicted on the bottle. Note: you will never find a 100%proof HP on sale. They use 50% and up for rocket fuel. Am I clear now please?
