  • In this video I visited Hampden Park, Hampden Park and Hampden Park.
There are three sites in Glasgow that have at one time or another had a stadium named Hampden Park on them. Scotland play their football there, Queen's Park have played at them all and they've also hosted numerous Scottish Cup finals.
The first Hampden Park is at the site where international football was born!

I was lucky enough to watch England play at the old Hampden Park before it was knocked down. Amazing stadium built to hold 150,000. The new ground is so underwhelming in comparison......it looks identical to dozens of other grounds and only holds 52000 and that's supposed to be progress!

@@FootyAdventures It was a very impressive sight. I went in 1988 or 89 (can't remember exactly, but England won!) When you look at photos or videos of the old Hampden with 130,000+ inside you can clearly see the fans are not packed in like sardines but still have plenty of room. It really was vast.

It was the noise which stood out for me from the old ground.
Modern journalists/commentators/pundits talk about the ‘Hampden Roar’ as if it were as made up as Braveheart, but when the old stadium had 100,000+ inside it literally did...well, roar.
The noise on a big match could be incredible.

@@FootyAdventures Yeah, I drive past it every other day lol. These videos of yours are great. History is such an important part of football. A lot of the old stadiums in UK have been demolished and replaced with these identikit plastic arenas as you know. I really don't like those, they lack character. Have you been to Starks Park Kirkcaldy where Raith Rovers have played since 1891? The ground isn't completely original, but the unusual L-shaped main stand that houses the players dressing facilities and the supporters lounge was designed by the renowned Grandstand architect Archibald Leitch and was built with part funding from the sale of Alex James to Preston North End in 1925. I think that would be a real interesting one.

Lords Cricket Ground has a similar history to the Hampdens.
Thomas Lords first ground hosting some historic early matches.
Eton v Harrow have been playing annually since 1805. MCC had a similar significance in the game to Queens Park. Codifying
the rules, etc. There were two Lords grounds at one point, the first went due to a rent dispute, facilities moved to site two, then a canal was built through the ground so the current site was developed.

Glasgow Rangers once played a European Cup match at a stadium built in 1807. The ground was comissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, originally for fake naval battles. The ground could be intentionally flooded.
The Arena Civica in Milan was used between the wars by Inter Milan. AC used it occasionally. Held up to 30k. In 1957 Rangers away tie with AC was switched to the ground due to fog at San Siro. Possibly a late kick off time change as well, as only about 5k went to the game.
It's still used by small rugby and soccer teams.
Access at non match times was reportedly easy.

We started getting live telecasts of the games in around 1985, '86 or so, crackly, hazy vision of poor quality.
But one game had particular interest to me, Scotland Vs. Australia to qualify for Mexico '86.
This is because the captain of Australia had played in high school football with my brother, & had presented me with my first trophy when I was around 10 y.o.
In a T.V. interview he spoke about that game (at the old Hampden) and said something he had never quite experienced & will never forget was the noise of the crowd. He said the volume & the intensity was unbelievable.

Briliiant film Sam. Actually really good that you could that close to the bowling club - it is open access. A wonder of design from Ashley Rawson on the mural. Like I said the 3 Hampdens or as we are now saying 4 hampdens are the most important of all time. Glad you enjoyed it and we will get you over when lockdown is over and you can get close up to the mural and into the pavilion itself. If anyone wants to see the proving of the 1st Hampden in 2017, then click this link too. czcams.com/video/NZMSDFcFMY4/video.html. Enjoy.

No pitch or posts at Cathkin Park now, I see. There has been on and off, but for some reason the City Council seem to have an aversion to allowing a football pitch there. It was - and would be - simply a park pitch, of course, but I think it would be appropriate for football still to be played there.
