      Great video Dave! I also find the Fade Brush Tool found under the Edit menu very useful in fine-tuning brushstrokes when dodging and burning. It only works on your last brush stroke, but it is very useful and lets you change the opacity of the last brush stroke for both Opacity and Flow. Works well with other tools such as Clone Stamp and Healing brush.

    Because I watch all your tutorials, I mostly use the Dodge and Burn as set up by the TK panel. Add in your excellent explanation of opacity and flow, I feel like my dodging and burning will be both more subtle and more effective. Thanks Dave!!!

    It’s so lovely to understand everything you say Dave, as a Spanish speaker, for me this is crucial. I learnt english when I was at school, (kind of 40 years ago!) So, I truly appreciate your clarity. Pls, never forget that international people may also watch you! Lots of blessings for you and the family, Daniela, from Uruguay.

    Thanks Dave for showing more options when it comes to dodging and burning. I stumbled across the fact that if you want to change opacity between 0 and 10% you can also just press 0 followed immediately by 1 for example to get 1% so no need to hold down the zero key

    Thanks for the great video on dodging and burning Dave. Another tool I find useful is the fade tool found under the edit menu. This only affects your last brushstroke. It allows you to change the opacity of that final brushstroke for both opacity and flow. It also works with other tools, such as clone stamp, and the healing brush.

    Hello Dave, I do a lot of dodge and burn using many of the techniques you presented on TK Friday but I never tried to lower - flow. This video demonstrated you can have better control of the d&b process by reducing flow. Thank you for this video.

    Basing off this technique, how could you then emulate the Shadows/Midtones/Highlights targeting control with PS's inbuilt Dodge and Burn tool? Blend If, maybe?

    Hi Dave, I have been watching this video and the TK Friday one on Dodging & Burning. With the Wacom tablet in this video (Master the Art of Dodge and Burn in Photoshop: Brush Opacity and Flow Techniques) you set the Flow of the Brush to 1%. I have never seen you do this in the TK Friday videos (maybe I am wrong). Is there a reason for this?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  Před rokem +1

      I don't usually use this technique. I only work with changing opacity but this is another way of going about dodging and burning. If you don't like lifting your brush or un-clicking your mouse and painting again, then this is something you can try. I know some editors like this method better, feeling it gives them more control. The way you see me dodge and burn on TK Fridays is the method I prefer.

    I can hit the right side of the burn button on the TK8 panel and get a transparent layer like you are explaining. The left side gives me a 50% grey layer. When do I want a transparent layer , and when do I want a 50% grey layer?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  Před rokem +1

      Both layers will give you the same results. I like the 50% gray layer because it is easier to see the painting you have done on the 50% gray layer. Plus to erase or blend simply use a gray brush (change the brush opacity as needed). You will need to use the erasure tool on a transparent layer to do any modifications.

    Would you mind clarifying why you used two different blend modes? Also, it appears you started with “Soft Light” for burning and “Overlay” for dodging then switched when you started your demonstration. I’ve struggled with dodging and burning…I’m going to try your technique. Thanks for a great informative video.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  Před rokem

      You can use either overlay or soft light for both dodging and burning. I just find I get better results with overlay for dodging and soft light for burning. But it does pay to experiment. Overlay is a bit stronger effect than soft light.
