#DodgeBurn #DoItBetter #LinearLight
Thank you for this tutorial and the brilliant action, Blake. I have been using PS since version 2 and have been watching tons of tutorials befor but never heard of this method. For me, the results are much more pleasant than with soft light. Keep up the good work!
Blake, another outstanding tutorial with for me unknown ideas. Thank you very much for all your efforts and particularly for the PS actions. I really appreciate your work and enthusiasm.
😁 awesome! Thank you so much, I really appreciate your support!
WOW! GAME CHANGER! I cannot tell you how often I have struggled with skin tones after I dodge and burn on the traditional gray layer in Soft Light. You are absolutely correct. Color do get over saturated easily. I often would put the blend mode to Luminosity in hopes that the color stay true or reduce the flow of the dodge tool. Your explanation and examples were fantastic. This is exactly what I needed. No one has even taught how Linear Light affects photos (except to sharpen in High Pass). Thank you for this. Anxious to try it out now.
My pleasure! Linear Light is my favorite Blend Mode. It really is the best one in the list IMO. I have all the topics on it I want to share for a course sometime. It's pretty crazy how much it can do and what it can be used for. It's addicting to use :)
As always, Blake, thanks! Really like these actions and your upgrades on the My Panel!
Thanks 😁 glad you like it!
I'm using these actions on images from an outdoor portrait shoot -- awesome results and massive time-saver! Thank you Blake.
So glad I could help!
Blake - the Master of Dodging and Burning :)
Thank you very much for sharing.
Excellent tutorial (as always).
Thanks 😁 I'm learning as I go!
Wow, thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I was dealing with exactly the problems you describe in this video just yesterday. This is such a clean and elegant answer to my problem. Appreciation & Respect. 🙂
Blake, you are a phenomenal guy. Your new ideas change my workflow and give me some new possibilities to make a better photo. Thanks for everything!
It is sincerely my pleasure! Thank you for your continual support.
Terrific stuff - really learned something new here! And thank you too for your generosity with the ATNs!👍🏻
Sincerely, my pleasure!
Great tutorial, Blake! Yes Linear Light is a superior blend mode for this kind of work. For absolute colour-control I use the Luminosity blend mode on a Curves adjustment instead of a 50 % filled layer nowadays. Not only do I avoid any colour-shift that way but I also get a total control over local contrast with the Curve at the same time! On top of that the Curve adjustment protects the absolute blacks and whites from clipping in the histogram ( as long as the white and black points are untouched in the Curve tool ). This way I can fine-tune my curve to make sure my “Burning” is going to have less or more contrast, -and the same goes for the “Dodging” of course. Would you agree?
Blake Great tutorial and great explanation.
I downloaded the actions and one small change I would recommend for anyone using the "Flavors" is to modify the actions to first Select Layer "Quick D&B". This way if you move off that layer and then decide you want the "Dark Flavored" or "Light Flavored", etc it will apply the Blend If to the correct layer.
Thank You.
Wow and all these years I thought I was just not great at it, the colour shifts drove me nuts. I cant believe this is such an effective and easy fix. Thank you Blake
Easy fix! Seems so simple, huh?
Wow! Thank you for the explanation of dodging and burning in Photoshop. A VERY worthwhile lesson. I also appreciate that you are an accomplished communicator.
Those actions are fantastic. Dodging and burning this way gives a much more natural effect.
Agreed!
Not every day you can bump into someone on youtube makes you so exciting:) Thanks man!
Haha, I love what I do 😁
Wow, I am deeply impressed by that simple idea which works amazing! Esp the quick D&B enhances whole images at one click and its so fast to mask it out. Thank you!
😁 cool, huh? I was pretty pleased with it. Linear Light is going to win the Super Bowl...
One of the more useful actions Ive seen. Nice job, and thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you, Blake, for such a useful action! This is something I will definitely be using in my workflow. 😉
Perfect!
Wow, awesome tutorial and a real lightbulb moment. Thank you for the information and the actions Blake
Awesome! So glad I could provide that for you 😁
Fantastic, thanks Blake. Can't wait to give this method a try.
Awesome!
I was watching a lot different D&B Tutorials, but this one is my favorite.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge - i love the way you explaine 💕
Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 🗻 ✌🏼
I'm a devoted fan and love the continued sharing of your impressive creativity. Thank you!
Thanks so much, it really is my pleasure!
Excellent tutorial again since using this method I found by duplicating layers at different strengths in Linear light I can adjust specific areas for the best results
Great tip!
You got a subscriber. I love your explanation, patience, and accuracy in teaching. Really great job.
Thank you so much!
Clever! I dig it! I'll definitely be working that in, thank you!
Awesome!
Very useful information Blake, makes D&B effective & simple. Thanks for the actions.
My pleasure! Glad you like them.
Excellent technique. And the explanation is a level up. Thanks for this
You're very welcome!
That’s so great Blake, thanks so much for the action - I’ve used it now & it’s going to make a real difference in my workflow :-)
Fantastic! Glad to hear it.
Brilliant Blake! I always learn something cool wit your videos! Thanks Blake

Sweet! Glad I can help 😁
Great way to dodge and burn.. thank you so much! f64 best academy ever, keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Will do 😁
Blake, this has addressed so many issues. Love the tip of converting blend mode of stamped layer. Can't count the number of times I have started over because I could not redo an adjustment. THANK YOU!!
i guess im asking randomly but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Roland Colten instablaster ;)
@Nasir Emmanuel thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Nasir Emmanuel it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account :D
@Roland Colten Glad I could help :D
Very useful! Thx for sharing!! 👍🏼👍🏼
My pleasure
I am surprised. I will try it, and probably adopt this method from now on, because I have noticed the extra saturation that results of dodging and burning the traditional way. Thanks a lot!
Awesome! Glad I could help 😁
This is awesome, thank you! I love d&b and also prefer the grey layer over the two layers with masks option. I have also noticed that both the curves and the soft light method is often oversaturating skin tones, particularly when burning newborn skin which is quite red to begin with and I’m hoping that this method will help prevent that. I will try this tomorrow 👍
Woohoo! I think you'll like it!
Very helpful and thanks for the free actions. Top guy.
An excellent episode. Thanks for the Actions.
Awesome! Thanks. Glad you like them.
I wish CZcams would allow me to like this more than one time. Simply awesome!! Thank you so much. Can't wait to check out more tutorials and the panel as well.
Glad you enjoy it! It is my pleasure.
Thanks Blake! Although I already have your wonderful panels, the actions will be useful.
Great to hear!
Awesome tutorial! Love your channel
Thanks 😁
Ok, you convinced me. I subscribed. Great tutorials that are well presented.
😁
brilliant , i was using the soft light D&B, this looks great, thank you blake.
My pleasure!
This new technique is absolutely amazing, Blake!
When I tried it out using your Photoshop actions I was like "Whaaaaaat!?!?!?" and my jaw just dropped on the floor, I almost couldn't believe my eyes!
I had just changed my TV from LCD to OLED and your actions had the same WOW-effect on my photos. So, again, thank you so much for your fantastic work and inspiration!!!
Your "I'm loving f64 Academy" friend 👍😁
Awesome! That is so cool. Love hearing that. Enjoy!
BTW: It's even more fun, when you use the "Layer Tools" from "Palette Effects 3" after using the D&B action. They allow much better fine tuning 👍
P E R F E C T! I started to use these settings today and will use them forever. Thanks for the action freebie :)
:) My pleasure! Just glad to serve!
You have out done yourself on this one! Thanks for the actions
I actually love your videos & the ' other ' guy YOU both are my favs.. Thank you for helping me understand more about D & B. Also Thanks so much for the actions, definitely going to use them. I'm going to check out the MyPanel also. I love PS & what it can do, I'm such a newbie even after years of working it. Thanks again
It's my pleasure 😁 thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot. That was really helpful
Thank you! Very quick and simple way to deal with D&B!
My pleasure 😁
Great video. Learned a lot.
Awesome!
I could actually follow this along and understood everthing! Thank you for the tips and the explanation!
I'm so glad!
You have some genius tutorials on your channel, this longtime Photoshop user is very impressed! Subscribed.
😁 that's awesome! Means a lot to me, thanks!
Thanks for this information and the free actions. Of course I added them to my new My Panel 2 which also rocks...
Yes!!!! Love it! My sincere pleasure!
Thank you for another great tutorial and the actions. Cheers
Glad you like them!
Excellent work Blake....!
Thank you! Cheers!
I did present my own "new" version a couple months ago that did not rely on the 50% grey layer... And now this!
I'll have to try this as well now, cheers Blake!
Just, I still prefer a solution based on my method because it allows me to precisely erase a brush without having to paint over with grey. ;) So I suppose in the end I'll merge our 2 techniques... And wait for your video where you'll talk about it 😉😁👍🏻
Blake, thank you for the routine. They work great especially on portraits. Many thanks, Guru of Nerdy and Dorky Style in PShop.
Haha, I'll take that!
This was wonderful. Now, next April 1, I challenge you to take something really easy and simple and make it difficult and convoluted. It would probably take me several minutes to know that you were doing it, even though I'm like totally in on it (because by then I will have forgotten all about this). But seriously, Blake, you are a top-five PS teacher, without question. Thank you!
Hahahaha! I like that! I'd sound like 90% of the other instructors on CZcams 🤣🤣🤣
@@f64Academy You're right, cancel that idea.... ;-)
Tricks I have learned from your channel are the real professional game changer things 👌🏻
Glad you think so! But this is just barely the tip of the iceberg! What I teach on f.64 Elite and what I put in my paid courses are both lightyears ahead of what I put out for free on CZcams :)
Great technique! Thanx!
You are so welcome!
This is awesome Blake, thanks so much!
My pleasure!
BTW I D and B a LOT in my Pet Photography and I'm right now editing a picture, just applied it. SOOOOO good. BTW I use ZE and PE a huge amount also :-)
Fantastic, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Great technique! But you're right: Lots of things to remember. I'm waiting to see the difference from just duplicating the actrual image layer and just dodge and burn the copy of the original layer. You guys are so good at making things harder. Haha!!!
Lol, not really. The problem with duplicating the layer and D and B on that is that it is not conducive to a layered workflow. Anytime you add a duplicate copy or a stamped layer you can really only work above it and the work below it is not as important anymore. This way you can maintain a healthy layered workflow.
Its not harder, its smarter ;)
Wow i never saw this anywhere that actually amazing ty
Wow! This is incredible. Thank you! Wow!
😁 glad you liked it, it was my pleasure!
thats a brilliant tutorial , thanks indeed Blake
You're welcome! Glad you liked it!
Thank you SO much for the great actions and your video. I learnt a lot. The actions work fantastically.
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video again, Between this and the Diamond Gradient action, enjoying photoshop again.

thank you for the actions
Great video thanks
My pleasure!
Just saying watching your video finding it very interesting and shall give it a try thankyou
Awesome, glad you like the idea.
Great stuff
😁
I realy like the outcome of this method instead of going by hand.
Glad you like it!
Subscribe'd!! Just used this technique and wow wow wow!! Love it!
Woohoo!
another top tip
thanks again. Chris
No problem 👍
Love this, but since i work with portraits and skin retouching i like having even more control over dodging and burning, so i prefer having separate curve layers, one for light and other for dark, this way i can use adjustment layers for example in the areas where i have to fix the saturation etc.
Awesome! Hey everyone has their preferred method and that's totally cool with me.
Great, Thank You
My pleasure!
thank you man
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
Thank you!
My pleasure 😁
Awesome!
Thank you wery much. Action works translated into Italian!
@f64 Academy *as a photographer, i realised I have been taught wrong by professional when I was in school. 😭 Thanks for the million worth Dodge and Burn TECHNIQUES.*
I use PS to process solar images. I recently purchased MyPanel2 and the Linear Dodge/Burn actions were included. I must say that the linear light method is far superior to anything I've used previously.
BTW: a plus-one for MyPanel2... It makes organizing a long list of actions a breeze. 👍
Awesome!!! So glad you like them both!
Thank you, Blake! This D&B set of actions is the most elegant tool I've ever added to my Ps arsenal. Now I want to take a closer look at your panel to see what other amazing tools I haven't given serious consideration to until now. Does your wife realize she's married to a genius?
🤣 no she think I'm crazy. These actions are literally nothing compared to the panels!
awesome! i love that
😎
Dude, I am a portrait photographer and your actions are dope!!!
Yesssssss!!!!!
I think you should change the title from, "You are dodging and burning all Wrong!" to "Are you dodging and burning just one way!" I played around with this technique a number of years back and like it for certain situations and dislike it for others. I use this technique, along with 50% soft light, and my personal favorite is using curves. The most important thing to remember!
With some pictures, you might experience "color shifts". Some People use the curves and 50% fill layer set to luminosity or linear light to avoid these shifts. I recommend against it because adding light SHOULD affect the color. (If you look at a blue pen in the dark it will look gray, but move the pen into the light and you see blue.) So light, in fact, make everything become saturated. A hue/sat adjustment layer allows me to control HOW MUCH the light is going to affect the saturation.
When you blend it "Linear light" or "Luminosity" it doesn't affect saturation at all and everything can start to look grayish after a while if one isn't careful.
Love your videos.
Great points. This is my go to methid these days.
It's a common technique here on YT, to make the titles catchy. I'm just not brave/confident enough as a beginner to use these words. I just say quick, easy way or things like that in my titles.
Well tutorial sir. Thank u. Prabu from India. Tn
Thanks Sensei
My pleasure 😁
Thanks for this❤❤❤❤
My pleasure
I always dodge and burn with a brush at 1-4% flow and with a brush set to 2 pixels size, i use the curves method , one layer for dodge one layer for burn
That's a great method, but how many times have you forgotten to reset that brush after 🤣 be honest! Lol
Another cool stuff. I noticed that too, the colors tend to shift a little bit, either it will be more saturated or discoloration when you do dodging and burning too much in that particular area. Is this works with curves adjustment layer as well?
Great work Blake, is this going to be added to your Dodge & Burn Pro Panel? or should I just use the action separately?🥰😀👍👌
Not necessarily. But you can still use the idea with that panel, just have to change the blend modes.
Thank you, Sir!
My pleasure!
I found this worked better than a soft light layer when dodging, in terms of keep color accuracy(ie, the area didn't become de-satured). However, when burning I found it to be worse than soft light and when lightening dark areas, too much saturation was introduced in these area.
Try lowering the fill
