  • I did a two tank afternoon / night Manta Ray dive with Kona Honu Divers on Oct 4, 2016 in Keauhou Bay just off the west side of the Sheraton in south Kona. We caught the Kona Honu Divers boat that is located in the Honokohau Harbor and Small Boat Marina which is just south of the KOA Airport and a few miles north of Kailua Kona Hawaii. My wife, Teri snorkeled on this trip and since we have both done this night Manta Ray trip before I can back her up when she said it is a true bucket list top rated thing to do. There were sixteen divers on the boat but we were divided into three groups and took off in different directions the first dive. As you can see in this video from the afternoon dive it was not overly crowded plus it helped to stay in the back of the group and look back often ;) as other divers kept chasing the Manta Rays as soon as they saw them even though they were instructed not to, sometimes it's hard to follow direction I guess. We never went deeper that 40 foot and spent the whole second night dive at about 30 feet sitting on the bottom lights pointing upwards to attract the plankton. Just sit down at 30 feet relax and enjoy the show, diving doesn't get any easier than on these night time Manta Ray dives on The Big Island of Hawaii.
