- Kinji Hakari is a character that gets alot of flack for his style of fighting and "luckiness" in battle. In this video I will be explaining why Hakari's abilities are not just limited to dumb luck and how he actually is one of the most skilled and resourceful characters in the entire series of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Hakari or "Kin-chan" is literally one of my favorites now after seeing his fight with Kashimo. His aura, attitude and especially abilities all fit and make sense within his character. Excited to see more of him!
That whole fight was peak

An interesting take I saw is that hakaris domain is based on the notion that "the house always wins." In this case, hakari and his domain are the casino, and anyone else in the domain are the gamblers. It's not about if hakari can get a jackpot, it's when he'll get a jackpot(which is reflected in the many chance boosting abilities). Hakari himself states he has never gone beyond 30 rolls. Basically, everyone else is gambling with their life and the domain is rigged against them, something I think kashimo realized at the end of the fight. This also ties into the first time we saw hakari and how he was scripting matches. He's meant to win in his domain, that's the point.

They say "the winners in a casino are the ones that never play". Maybe to counter his domain the opponent must not risk anything and jusy don't fight. I want to see if there's a hidden weakness in this domain bc it's really interesting

Going by that logic I believe that Hakari's domain has some kind of cheat function which allows him to get almost instant and back to back jackpots and (for obvious reasons) only he knows about this function and doesn't reveal it to his opponents!
It's a nice theory but i do remember reading somewhere in the manga that Hakari's DE rules and way of functioning are mentally revealed to anyone that enters it.

@@dynamic_dynamo but the rules aren't revealed because Hakari wants them to be. It's automatic, and that's what gives the opponent the chance to fight back. I don't think Hakari can select which rules are revealed amd wich ones aren't
Gege does so much work teaching us about people with similar abilities and then killing off that character, only to introduce a character with a fully realised version of the ability prior explained.
For example, Haruta Shigemo, was entirely surviving off of luck. If he had known more about his ability, he’d be able to leverage his Daily Miracles and probably be as dangerous, if not more dangerous than Hikari.
I’d also say the reason Toji was introduced was to show us the possible ceiling of what a “fully realised” Maki would look like. Which is why we’re all not calling ass pull, when she casually walks the whole of the Zenin clan in the space of probably an hour.
Gege has consistently shown themselves to be one of the most competent writers out there in terms of overall structure. When they kill off a character, it genuinely means they’ve out-served their purpose. We can afford to give them a little faith when it comes to calling ass pulls and Plot armour.
Completely agree with you fam, I was literally screaming HARUTA IS EVIDENCE OF LUCK NOT BEING AN ASSPULL at my screen when looking at the casuals screaming plot armor on twitter. This series is something really special.
@@ovafofah6635 Haruta was a nothing character. We had characters like Nanami dying showing us alot of our characters aren't safe. But I do think Hakaris ability is bullshit.

Yep, i know the moment we were introduced to Nobara, i knew she won't stay for long. She appears, accomplished her goal (in a way or another), then took off. She didn't overstay her welcome
@@ShatteredGlass916 It’s brutal but it’s great storytelling. Although, out of all the people that have died, she’s the one I think has the potential to come back because her unfinished plot lines.
Her storyline feels somewhat unfulfilled, and I don’t think Gege is the type to just kill off Nobara just to give Yuji emotional damage.
Nanami was part of introducing black flash, challenged Yuji’s warped sense of duty and was killed to directly crush Yuji’s resolve.
Nobara’s death felt like overkill and imperfect. It was meant to be the nail in the coffin for Yuji’s psyche but it doesn’t serve multiple purposes like Nanami’s death does.
How can anyone complain about Hakari vs Kashimo? That was a jaw-dropping fight. One of the best in the series no question. The artwork is just incredible.
It surprises as well how people could call Hakari dumb. Being a loud personality doesn’t make you an idiot. He constantly shows just how smart he is from the moment we meet him. This also extends to his domain. The dude is literally playing slots and the reward is cursed energy. The game is also rigged in his favor with character themes that give him bonus percentages. All he needs is one win and that also gives him bonus percentages that lead to a snow ball effect of wins. Gambling favors the house. Hakari is the house.

"Hakari Kinji you're truly overwhelmingly lucky " - Kashimo , this statement made by Kashimo Gege gave us so much just from this , the Kanji that was used is , there is the luckiest person ever and then there is Hakari a tier above that, that tells you he controls so many aspects of his DE that aren't shown to his opponent, the notion " the house always wins" sheds so much light on Hakari's Character. His character is complex and simple at the same time you can't decipher him with Surface thought you'd have to dig deeper , this is where reading between the lines becomes quite vital. such an amazing character and an elite sorcerer at that

Been waiting for Hakari since he was teased after Yuji's death. Was sooooo happy with how Akutami wrote Hakari so far. Character archetype, personality, power level, his technique etc are just so awesome. The references to Michael Jackson, Jojos, being an otaku but also essentially a crime boss was soooo dope. Can't remember the last time a character lived up to the hype this well.

Im kinda reminded of the MC in bluelock from this a little bit. At one point in the manga he tries to factor in luck in his planning and strategies and its essentially boils down to "I cant control luck but I can put myself in a position where I can taje advantage of it". Im getting a similar vibe here

All hail based Isagi. Seriously tho, blue lock is prob my second best sports manga right in between haikyuu and eyeshield. The stark difference from "teamwork makes the dreamwork" and "losing is part of experience" mentality most shows use to "fck everyone you do what you gotta do to survive in this industry" is a breath of fresh air. And tbh, it's more realistic too. Teamwork won't fix your contracts or bring food to the table. You could have mentioned the guy Sukuna kills in the Shibuya arc, that has a power based purely on luck that lets him escape death, however, by going against so many opponents stronger than him recklessly, luck only gets him so far and he dies without Sukuna even intending to

Luck based powers/abilities are incredibly tricky to get right within any narrative especially a battle shounen because of how much of a nightmare balancing such a power is without creating these "plot armor" allusions. I think Gege did an excellent job with Hakari (even if a little demanding for readers to wrap their heads around the basics of pachinko but very fun nonetheless) and it's been an absolute blast to read this sneaky character use his wits and love for gambling to beat his opponents, like he said using skill to grab a hold of luck is not something far removed from reality let alone the story itself, people do it all the time because sometimes you have to take the chance and see if it works in your favour and professional gamblers know every way they can to maximise their chances of winning and when to risk it all, and saying that Hikari has plot armor imo discredits the amount of risk and effort he's clearly put into his craft, especially when factoring in the caliber of his latest opponent its not like man came out of it without a scratch and even admitted to coming close to death multiple times. This is the beauty of the art of luck and risking it all for victory.

@@truenightmare6665 make a rule set to minimize the amount of chance. I don’t completely understand the rules of Hakari’s domain, but at a first glance it’s vary easy to see it’s not all luck. Thus his mantra “ use skill to grab a hold of luck.”

For those who don't understand "it takes skill to grab ahold of luck"
Let me give you my 2 cents.
What it is essentially saying in my eyes is that in order to be succesful you have to be opportunistic and a calculated risk taker.
There are many people who are succesful because they capitalise on opportunities given to them to their full extent to make better choices to get what they want.
I mean, this was mentioned in Sukuna and Megumi"s conversation.
Even though Megumi was lucky,
he did not capitalise on that to make choices that will help him become stronger.

i love how they in jujutsu kaisen did the whole revealing your technique thing good , always in anime i was like wtf why would you explain the enemy how it works but in jujutsu kaisen it actually gives you a buff xD
it is psychic thing, when you listen and understand, then you believe. when you believe, the things will became real.
It’s actually a self contract. Revealing your techniques to the enemy decreases your chance at winning, but in return the ability itself becomes more effective. They briefly explained it initially but they mention it most times when they reveal their abilities.
Works like that with Nen in HxH too and a few other series with smaller buffs.
It also has a hidden benefit, because opponents who don't know your technique will be relatively cautious, not knowing what you're going to pull off. But tell them the basics of your technique, and they'll start planning with that into account, meaning any hidden detail of your technique can be impressively important. Also, if you're smart, when training you'll already start planning for how someone could defeat you, finding countermeasures to their countermeasures to your technique.
Basically, you're suddenly forcing them to subconsciously forcing them to follow the rules to your game

I also love the concept of "Binding Vow" especially where someone explain their curse technique in order to make it stronger in that moment. Because usually in many anime, many characters explain their technique for no reason or just overconfident. But in JJK it's for a whole other reason, revealing your technique actually serve a purpose for you to get stronger. The perfect example of this is why Sukuna said that he won't cheat by revealing his curse technique against Jogo because even without that Sukuna already destroyed him
What i love about Hakari is that his "plot armor" doesn't feel like an asspull to keep him alive for narrative purposes. In the world off JJK secondary characters get killed off like flies so seeing him utilize his luck and skill to survive this absolute meatgrinder of a story is nothing short of cathartic, he feels geniunely lucky and not just like an asset to the story that has to be preserved

Did everyone collectively decided to ignore the fact that Hakari's domain is rigged? He's not a gambler playing against the odds, he's the house and he doesn't even try to hide that the odds are stacked in his favor, he found a loophole and cheated the entire system.

Sure Hakari has a ton of luck but your right how it seems to be a running theme in the series, Hakari wouldn't be half as capable if he didn't know how to use his powers or fight for a start. Lot of good the immortality dose him if he's not strong enough to actually win the fight itself, then he's just delaying his defeat. I was reading this fight and the whole time I was thinking, "OK Hakari, you are on the clock, Kashimo is too good to just brute force through or fight head on without a plan, you need to finish it before you run out of time or he'll tear you apart like panda." Which is nearly what happened if Hakari hadn't been using his head he would be dead and so would Panda.
Another thing that people also need to understand is that by establishing Hikari's incredible luck here and now, it'll make it so that future instances of him needing to have and capitalize off of his luck will have more potential outcomes. If someone who we know is *this* lucky manages to lose against someone crucial, then it's going to hit much harder that his luck failed him than if we didn't see something as absurd as gambling your life away twice in one battle.

A lot of people assume that luck is "good things happening to you" and it can be a cause for envy and bitterness.
Derren's experiment showed how it is simply being able to fully utilise and grasp and recognise opportunities.
One person helped someone who was broken down on the road and get fixed and it turned out to be a musician who did them a favour and played at their bar. People would say wow that's lucky, however, other people who describe themselves as not having any luck, drove past the same car and had the same opportunity to be "lucky".
Hakari's domain etc likely presents him with lots of these opportunities but it is a huge skill to be able to recognise them and do something with them and really use them to their full potential - it's like it's own system with a skill ceiling.

Hakari being naturally lucky and having a gambling addiction / Cursed technique makes perfect sense and is actually a great basis for his attack stule
A big aspect of lucky characters, or people in general, is that very often they're people who put themselves in position to capitalize on their luck. They play to their outs. "The situation is bad, but if this thing happens then..." and they set themselves up as if it's a foregone conclusion that the lucky thing will happen. Then when that thing, whatever it is, happens, they're ready for the tables to turn. They don't try to get themselves into pinches, but when in a pinch, the lucky ones are the ones are those that are ready for any opportunity and seize them without hesitation.
I think his “luck” is also a form of binding vow. In the JJK universe you can get a power boost by showing your hand. You give something up and you get something back.
I think he controls his luck by taking purposeful risks for greater returns.

lots of great points, and i think the best one is that hakari is the one who made his domain in the first place. Ever since the introduction of binding vows, I've wondered about the extent to which someone could use them in combat - the possibilities seem almost endless with them. everything from time based pacts to sacrificing crows or arms really goes to show how much utility they have, and i think hakari is someone who makes the most use of it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Hakari's innate technique is literally just 'luckiness', and he built his domain around that concept, abusing pacts that give him massive rewards in return for a very low chance of activation, when in reality the chance of activation is MUCH higher than he lets on due to his technique. Not to mention, considering the difficulty of realising a domain (shown by Megumi's struggle in creating his, despite his technique, as well as the incredibly low number of people who can actually use them), Hakari being capable of realising such an insanely complicated domain shows just how talented he is.
If anything, he doesn't seem remotely as blessed as someone like Okkotsu in terms of techniques alone, he's just someone who's able to take what's given to him and make full use of it.
