Concluding my spring 2023 Southwest USA hiking trip, I went on a road trip from Santa Monica to Palo Alto via US-101 and California Route 1. Starting in Santa Monica, I headed north on US-101. The journey took me through the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and into Ventura County, where agricultural fields and coastal views dominated the landscape.
Switching to California Route 1, the drive showcased the Pacific Ocean's expansive views, with rugged coastlines, serene beaches, and small, charming towns. The route passed through Malibu's scenic shores and the picturesque town of Santa Barbara. As I continued north, the landscape became more rugged, with cliffs and dense coastal vegetation.
Just before reaching Big Sur, a landslide forced a road closure on Route 1. I had to double back south, retracing my path through the winding coastal roads. Despite the detour, the scenery remained captivating.
On the way back from Big Sur, I made a stop near San Simeon and was fortunate to spot a colony of California sea lions basking on the beach. The sight of these playful marine mammals added a unique highlight to the trip.
I took California Route 46 eastward, passing through rolling hills and vineyards, a hallmark of California's wine country. Reconnecting with US-101, I continued my journey northward. The road led through the fertile Salinas Valley, known for its vast agricultural fields, and then into the bustling urban areas of the Bay Area.
The trip concluded in Palo Alto, a city recognized for Stanford University and its tech industry, where I lived for almost three years a decade and a half ago. The day after, after spending the day in San Francisco, I took a flight from SFO back home, concluding the three weeks long hiking trip.
This road trip offers a glimpse into the diverse beauty of California. Enjoy the views coupled with original calm ambient music.

Starting at 44:34, you drive through my city, and you can see the 3 peaks (2 on the left: Cerro San Luis, and Bishops Peak behind it, just visible to the left, and the long one on the right: Tower Trail) that my daughter and I train on, for our runs in the Grand Canyon. You drive alongside Cerro San Luis, and the trails are visible starting at 44:56 . You came through at the correct time in the spring(late April?), because all the grasses are still tall and green. A month later, and this would have all been golden and dry, and remain that way until December.

      Hi Todd,
Next time I'm in your neighborhood, you will buy me a coffee and we should do a trail run together to those peaks. That would be an opportunity to check on your R2R2R training progress. I shot this video in late April 2023, the best time of the year. However, following the extreme winter, this hiking trip's motif was closed roads and trails due to landslides and washouts. This included hiking in deep snow in Zion East Mesa and Bryce Canyon. The main hike planned for that trip was a Grand Canyon R2R2R, but two days after I hit the road, the Grand Canyon ranger's office announced that the North Kaibab trail would be closed above Cottonwood until mid-June.
Additionally, there was this landslide that resulted in CA Route 1 being closed for several months starting just south of Big Sur., affecting this video. I drove there anyway, hoping to get some drone shots of the road damage, but the high winds, the proximity to Los Padres, and the topography made it impossible. At least I got to see those sea lions. There were some other bypasses for Route 1 further south, resulting in driving through all those side roads.

      @@RubiHammer Sound good!
Yes, we've had 2 really "bad" winters in a row now (2023 and 2024) with heavy, long-duration rain storms in Dec. and a week or 2 later repeating in January. That always results in land slides up on Hwy 1, and even back in 2020/21/22, I think sections of it were closed or mostly closed. Bad place to place a highway that hangs onto the sides of unstable coastal cliffs. You really got your money's worth with all the weather and damage/closures.
I attempted a run to Pear Lake in Sequoia Nat'l Park, July 15, 2023, and barely got to Heather Lake, due to all the snow pack.
