Bill Zuersher - Seeing Through Christianity - A Critique of Beliefs and Evidence

  • OVERVIEW:
Based on his book Bill Zuersher provides a critical overview of Christian beliefs and the evidence for them. Where did these beliefs come from? Are there good reasons to believe Christianity is true? He looks at Christianity's major beliefs and the significant difficulties with each of them.
Mr. Zuersher also examines the evidence for Christianity namely religious writings and the historical fact of the early Jesus movement. He makes the case that this evidence does not support the religion's claims and he provides naturalistic alternative explanations for how its core beliefs arose.
    BIO:
BILL ZUERSHER is an activist for the separation of church and state. He studied economics and government at Yale and then worked for two decades in the energy industry before dedicating himself to teaching and writing. He has summarized his own religious views in his debates: “I do not believe in the existence of any gods or goddesses. It is certainly possible that one or more such beings exist but if so they do not appear to expend much effort superintending the affairs of this world.” He and his wife Linda live in southern California.201609

Wow, who is this guy? This is a very good concise summary of lots of stuff I have learned from various bible scholars. Can't believe he made it from Genesis to Paul and the gospels in approx one hour covering most of the ground that explains how Christianity came about in-between, and why we think that. He covered a lot!

We live in a rare bizarre time in history where we're transitioning out of religion. A lot of people have seen through it, a lot are coming out of it and a lot are still in it. It's fascinating to watch and even interact with the billions still holding to this nutty belief system.

@9-11 is a Judeo PNAC inside job so sad to hear otherwise intelligent people argue about Faith and pretend there is actual justification for these beliefs. Atheist is anyone that doesn't believe in a god, they are not a group or philosophy. Being pro-choice means a woman is in charge of her body not a man or god gets to make that choice.

This is not something that comes without a cost. Social psychology research indicates that conspiracies are replacing God in the role of agency and causation as we transition to a more secular society. You might ebentually long for the days when people just believed in God, rather than the New World Order.

But I suspect that our definitions of "evolution" are just different. To me, you may be mistaking "evolution" to mean "improvement"? I hesitate to quote a Wikipedia definition of anything - I'm sure we both know how wrong it can be about so many things - but here goes: "Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations." Change, NOT improvement. Things can get worse as well as better! Incidentally, I have a terrible confession. I probably believe in God!!! But I sometimes wonder if He believes in me?

As always, semantics is key here, especially if specific nomenclatures of different scientific fields (biology, history of religions and cosmology) are involved. Evolutionary biologists like Dawkins, Coyne or Shubin mean something quite different from cosmologists or astrophysicists.
You could boil all of it down to a common core of »change over time«, but then you just say »everything changes«, and all you have left is a truism.

@Steve You were going pretty good there until you went down the Christian rabbit hole. Blood sacrifice to avenge a long-ago sin by two people from whom it is quite impossible that the rest of mankind descended? That's not just a little bit nutty to you? Eating body and blood of this deity? Not just a little creepy? Whew.
If you're like "most Christians," like the ones who believe in evolution, you believe in a Jesus who's pretty much just like you, thinks like you, approves of the same things you do and disapproves of the same things you do. You're quite comfortable with your personal Jesus, aren't you? Of course you talk him up as being challenging, powerful, insight for living, stuff like that. But basically he's a way for you to have social acceptance and a itty-bitty halo, and to preach at people and come off as just a bit better in the Grace department. And you're SO willing to share yourself--I mean your God--with people, aren't you? Everyone should know Steve--I mean God, right?
The vanity, self-delusion, and general congenial complacent narcissism of American Christians is a wondrous sight to behold.

Predators and prey live there peacefully and cooperatively. “True”

You must learn to HATE every member of family, including yourself…minimum requirement to be a disciple, so loving!

Now ask yourself, if an all loving, 'perfect' and 'all knowing' mother or father puts a tempting looking bomb in the room of 2 most naive little children, and tells them to be good & obedient and not touch it otherwise they will destroy everything, then leaves the bomb totally accessible to the unsupervised all naive children AND leaves door open AND gets an all knowing, all evil creation that god had “wisely” created himself. Induces powerful reciprocal emotions on the gullible and vulnerable who need this emotional crutch. But remember he is immortal, GOD! so can’t die!! ‘Oh he came down as a man’, they might say. bs, from day 1 he was god with his virgin birth, miracles, healings. Fairy tale also has an 800 yr old man build a ship that carries min 2 of every animal including your crocs, hyenas, tigers, poison dart frogs, snakes,,,,,,,,,, from every part of the world, have 100 yr old woman become pregnant, has a geocentric earth, where every star, planets revolve around us rather heliocentric fact, LEAVING PLANET EARTH A SPEC in huge vasteness of space, has bats classed as birds, whales as fish, has every human born in sin because all naive, all innocent ,adam and eve were left alone in a garden tempted to eat an apple by an all knowing, all evil talking snake, satan, who was given full access by the all 'all knowing', omnibenevolent god. who created satan? god himself. *FOREHEAD SMACK!!*

What I like best about these atheistic videos is I get to think for myself. I'm a little rusty these days at 75 as a recent ex-christian, but it's really liberating nonetheless. Example: the book of Revelation states that the fearful will not be saved...hmmm This is of course the christian view, but if I decide to question this christian injunction - even though I will presumably go to a lake of eternal fire for doing so - I overcome my fear, i.e., give up the faith that promotes fear in the first place, and Christians are by definition full of fear of their god or they wouldn't be Christians. So, like I say, it's liberating, to me at least! And like one of our presidents once said during the Great Depression, the only thing to fear is fear itself.
Now learning about logos as the Greek word for Christ, this further set me thinking. I had always thought of Jesus as a really nice man who would save me if I made friends with him. I got this from Catholicism. However as I studied the bible through the years I saw it was much more complicated than that and actually kind of forbidding (to say the least). And all these new testament authors were just a bunch of deep thinkers trying to start up a new religion to increase their wealth and power. And Jesus was basically just an imaginary friend from my childhood I needed to grow out of. That's my personal testimony, folks.
As for truth, no one person can embody truth, despite what the bible says. We continually reach for it through science.

So far, they are Morocco, Algeria, Albania and North Macedonia, and France with 5 more to be added. They are located in the area of the Old Roman Empire. North Macedonia will be included, because that's where ALEXANDER THE GREAT was from. BITCOIN will be their currency and the poor countries will quickly get rich. This traitorous Jew is an army general in the rebel forces which are fighting against King Assad's military. The Book of Daniel says trouble for ISRAEL comes from "the north" and "far north" (Turkey); and 2.) the anti-Christ religious leader/false prophet who many believe is Rick Warren who wrote the unbiblical book, The Purpose Driven Life and whose son committed suicide. @SuperDukka Let's look at today. A WHO leader said, "The virus is stalking people." Oprah said, "Black people, the virus is coming for us." In the Old Testament, there were plagues that targeted specific groups, because they were steeped in sin. Statistically, if you see a black pregnant woman on the subway, she's on her way to have an abortion. This is giving your baby to the demon spirit, Molech. Also, if you worship false religion, you're at risk, such as Roman Catholicism. Covid is from Satan, because he's trying to stop the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If it were from God, billions would be dead over a few days. The vaccine for Covid will come out of ISRAEL, the nation will be a blessing to all.

@SuperDukka The first time the Christians as a group escaped death was in 70 A.D. during the Siege of Jerusalem where over 1 million Jews were slaughtered and the remaining people were made slaves. God ordained the siege, because the Christians were congregating in Jerusalem and not fulfilling the great commission. The Christians got word of a coming siege and they fled. The apostle Andrew went as far as the Urals, Russia. There is no record of any Christian being killed in the siege. Regarding Covid, Italy has a problem--their problem is called "Roman Catholicism", a false religion! The Lord Jesus said, "YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN." The Lord Jesus makes life worth living.

This is weak criticism and I expected more…
His first argument doesn’t take into account that the Hebrew would routinely use the Beth Essentia. This implies that when God revealed Himself as El Shaddai, he was revealing aspects of His nature that were relevant to Abraham at the time and sufficient for his belief. Later it was revealed to Moses fully the nature of God as YHWH. The Hebrew is hard to understand but definitely not as simple as this person wants us to believe.
For his point about making them in ‘our’ image, this is taken by some scholars as referring to the Trinity- I know what you’re thinking; 3 Gods! Nope lol. This is an improper understanding of the Trinity that is rampant among atheists and others alike. God referred to Himself as Elohim (plural Masculine tone) about 2500 times. Besides the Trinity (which is perfectly in line and coherent with the Christian view), Orthodox Jews iterate the idea of the majestic plural that was mentioned in the video and then very much so hand-waived. Once a character aspect has been named in a work, there is no need for the author to continue to use that aspect going forward because it’s assumed the reader understands this when reading on. I stopped at 46 min because I just couldn’t take the very weak arguments that only take a little bit of reading, exegesis, and scholarly work to understand. Disappointing. P.s. I fully expect atheists to come for time lol but I’ve heard it all before. The Truth is and will always be in God and of God. Ask yourself if you’re certain God doesn’t exist, if He does though, will your arguments be enough of an excuse for disbelief? Who knows. God bless.

This is an excellent historical review of the evolution of the two expressions of the Abrahamic faith. Ironically, this very same subject matter (i.e. the drift from polytheism through henotheism and eventually to monotheism) was part of the core curriculum at the seminary from which I graduated. We were also taught that Moses was a mythic pastiche of over thirty Midianite heroic sagas and that the exodus was an extravagant work of fiction intended to legitimize the rule of a once landless (that is: Hibaru) people. Yes, Zoroastrianism greatly influenced rabbinic Judaism, especially the Pharisees. Zoroastrianism imparted the concept of final judgement and a generalized notion of "afterlife" to Judaism and Xstianity.

@VideoAudioDisco09 Greetings from the northern hemisphere! I want to take this opportunity to answer your question. Please do not misconstrue my remarks as an attempt to proselytize. I'm not here to troll. I'm here, because I find the presentations to be fascinating.
The historical critical method is taught not as an exercise in apologetics, but rather as a way to bridge the hermeneutical gap (i.e. the cultural and historical differences that prevent us from understanding the text). While the application of scientific method and literary criticism to "holy writ" is troubling for many seminarians, I find it to be quite invigorating. However, I realize that I am not the average parish pastor. Years of teaching comparative religion, my background in philosophy, and participation in interfaith dialogue place me at odds with many of my fellow coreligionists.
While some may view historical critical method and the religious practices to be at odds, I like to understand them as being locked in a dialectic. The ancient Greeks understood the complementarity of Logos and Mythos. Logos (logic) and Mythos (mythological narrative) are not mutually exclusive; they are complementary. Logos creates artificial intelligence and Mythos helps us to understand its meaning. While I teach scripture using historical critical method, I will present the narrative in mythic form during worship. However, I do not confuse Logos and Mythos (e.g. I will never promote a creationist / literal interpretation of the two and a half creation myths found in Genesis). Perhaps this approach can best be explained by Joseph Campbell's quote, "If you treat myth literally, you pervert it; if you ignore myth, truth sneaks out the back door."
In my opinion, religion becomes a toxic liability to society when it seeks to promote its Mythos over Logos.
      Cheers,
      George

  • @philojudaeusofalexandria9556

This was an excellent presentation. My personal belief is what became what we know as Christianity (Gospel-based) was the 'Outer Mysteries' of a mystery religion that Paul espoused. The Outer Mysteries were the 'milk' of the religion - actually believing that Jesus was a living breathing human that walked around on earth. The Inner Mysteries (the 'meat') was that this was all invisible, supernatural, and spiritual; and that the Gospel stories were merely metaphors for what happened in a spiritual supernatural invisible realm. It would be too hard for new initiates/converts to grasp/believe in the 'meat' (since it is completely invisible and supernatural), so it is dressed up as a tale that actually happened on earth to help them internalize the key concepts.
So I would argue that all the Jewish/Canaanite stuff was just the mythological backstory to support what was really a Graeco-Roman mystery phenomenon (essentially placing more emphasis on the last influence in his key slide).
Later Christians decided that this 'milk' was in fact eternal truth and left behind the deeper metaphorical foundation.

      @trondbirkeland8094 Před 3 lety

@Ellen Francis 67Yes, but it adds the tribes sssociated with Rachel and Leah. Though the Kenite hypothesis is old and flawed, biblical research is often based on well-founded speculation. The question of the historicity of Moses complicates things further. No matter what the Midjan peoples believed in, I think it is safe to assume that the Israelites (the term Jews often used for the time after the Babylonian exile and/or destruction of the first temple) belief in Jahwe incorporated a stronger focus on their god as a mountain-, possibly even a volcanogod. The inclusion of the shrines of the patriarchs, the wargod-aspect of Sebaoth, agricultural Baal and citystate god carried this further. To say that the other Kanaanites merely invented their gods is underestimating the Israelites themselves. The very idea Israel signifies a struggle with divinity resulting in a continually changing idea of God. Armstrong, Bowker and Gardell mentions the kennites also, but the Kennite hypotesis is old and weary. I do not subscribe to it in total.

I am simply referring to research where such views are not neccessarily so evident. Try challenging those views instead by looking at the research yourself. You may be intrigued.

It is kind of confusing. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing I know. It was very interesting, however, I could have understood it better if a person well versed in it explained it.

The invention of Heaven and Hell was always on my list of "Top Ten List" of innovations made by Christianity that enabled it to far surpass its theological precursor, Judaism. I must say though that the idea that "punishment unto the third or fourth generation" served as a precursor to the notion of Hell was brilliant. It can't be a mere coincidence that a long-lived person from that period would have been alive long enough to actually see the third or fourth generation, and thus have to suffer the guilt of having caused them harm. (To give credit where credit is due, the notion of "guilt" as a manner of punishment is a theme that would continue to be developed and refined in Judaism. Christianity wisely got rid of it, which of course is why so many Christians are able to behave terribly, while feeling completely guilt-free.)

Well done presentation. Nothing really new here, though. Much of this is Religion 101 and well known outside the more exclusive churches. Karen Armstrong has a good book on this topic. The juxtaposition of stages with invasions and conquest is simple and elegant, though. This lecture neglects an even earlier stage, a more tribal and nomadic sticks and stones-cult where the chiefs have their own personal god to do business with. This predates even the more general Canaanite polytheism.

I also would have enjoyed if the speaker could have taken us all the way back to the bronze age with the god of war, the god of metallurgy, and the god Yah in Egypt and Nubia.
Maybe there's a follow-up lecture somewhere on CZcams.

.. in answer to the man's question at 1:16, Exodus was probly writ after the release from Babylon.. the Bible was writ then, probly by Ezra The Scribe, and Nehemiah.. we know this because the Book Of Maccabee's tells us that Nehemiah formed a library after the release from Captivity.. the Book Of Maccabee's is not in most Bibles, but is in some.. Maccabee's was left out because it is clearly historical, and is not considered spiritual, not Divinely inspired, but it does mention Nehemiah's founding of a library of scriptures, about 400 BC.. this is probly the version of OT that was later translated into Greek and became known as 'Septuagint'.. probly...

@@tabe412 ..Abraham.. the Bible was probly writ by Ezra The Scribe, after the release from the Captivity.. Jerusalem was sacked, the temple destroyed, the Jews taken into captivity, in 589 BC, by the Babylonians.. it is reasonable to assume that whatever writing the Jews had at that time was also destroyed, and the Bible tells us that after the captivity, about 50 yrs later, Ezra collected together stories of ancient Israel.. Ezra wrote ancient Hebrew Mythology, not history.. Adam and Eve, the Flood, Exodus, and even the story of Moses, all Myth, probly.. there may be some history in Chronicles and Judges, probly not all is myth.. but we can be fairly certain that Ezra wrote the Bible, about 500BC .. the Scriptures were again destroyed, scattered, during the Maccabean Revolt, and later again, a new library was formed, after that disastrous war.. this is what the Books Of Maccabee's tells us..

@@GARYWERSLEY your case is built on what you yourself call a "reasonable assumption". Let me rest my case there. Even if Ezra was the scribe the writing need not have all been conceived by him. If you have read the old testament the evidence for that is all there to see.

Gilad Pachter Jesus himself during his ministry presented himself with multiple names when asked who he was: The truth, the way, I Am. Both God and Jesus changed people’s name. Simon became Peter. Abraham was Abram. Of course, God changed Jacob to Israel. Name changing is consistent with the message.

And millions got murdered for it. That's undisputed history, you moron! Roman state religion got enforced by means of lethal violence. That's undisputed history. Europe broke free when they failed for the first time in 1648. That was the start of modern civilization based on individual civil rights. All priest craft are charlatans & magicians and all the religions are smoke & mirrors...a belief system based on an imaginary tulpa (and satan is an egregore). There's nothing unique about the Jews, they got their myths from previous empires, about solar movements and constellations the same as Egypt and Greece and India and Persia etc. it's about charting a calendar for agriculture and navigation using astronomy and sharing it as mythical characters (constellations) until it was written down and foolishly taken as literal facts by the uneducated superstitious. (what nonsense). The facts are there is no archeological evidence for any temple, exodus, etc. and no one apparently knows exactly where the so called Jews came from, even their history is fiction. As for the Christians, there exists no record of their most famous man who ever lived and died and shook up the city of Jerusalem with earthquakes and miracles, none of which is documented by any historian of the time, nada, zilch, zip!
Flavius Josephus is not credible, his writings contain the fiction of the seven miracles, one being of a cow giving birth to a lamb.
The so called biblical text is full of interpolations, forgeries, etc. geographical errors, and absurdities. The chiastic structure gives it away even in Paul's so-called epistles, half of which scholars deem to be forgeries as well.
