I would recommend using bearings on each wheel and decrease significantly the gaps between the different gears (Use teflon rings)
Exactly what I was thinking, I was really thinking it would significantly decrease friction.
Journal bearings would be best
I'm guessing that adding a lubricant like oil would also decrease friction? Maybe transmission fluid idk?
Also add a chanfer on the bed side of the print. You can se the first gold gear to have a big elephant foot (Layers squished at the bottom) and maybe add grease
Teflon or brass washers would be good to pack them more thingly and reduce vibration
Also this type of gears are really dangerous at high speed. Never be over the axis of rotation. If you reach really high speed inside your house you can get your ceiling damaged, electrodomestics and pets

Ever heard of...spacers ? They, when lubricated, can make a more stable machine and make it easier to turn.

Some suggestions:
1. use spacers on the axle, so the gears are fixed on there to prevent wobbling and gears grinding against each other
2. use a normal M8 steel bolt instead of the aluminum rod and screw it far enough in, so you dont get vibrations in the gears. That way, the gears wont come loose as well
3. use ball bearings on the housing AND the gears
4. reduce the contact area of the higher gears. So 1st gear has the most contact area and so on
5. lube the gears and bearings
6. print the grip sideways. so it doeant brake (obvsly)
7 maybe try different gear geometries. there a some that are better for high torque or high speed. the latter have much less drag.
8. you can safe an enourmous amount of weight on the last gears. make them much thinner then they are now

@@gumby5068 he’s saying put the ball bearings where the gears are connecting to the axel. That way, the gears have less friction trying to spin. Like how skateboard wheels are connected to the trucks, they have ball bearings to decrease friction
@@gumby5068 note that most of the gears are freely rotating on their shafts. Only the first gear is keyed to the shaft.

Have you done a cycloidal drive gearbox? I've seen them do over 20:1 in a single stage.
Handy little trick I’ve learned working with Gears and Gear cases. Take the end of your sandpaper and tape it to a drill bit. Wrap the sandpaper around the drillbit and now you have a rotary sanding tool.

you can add a worm gear for rotating the slowest or the main driver gear as it needs more force to rotate other gears
i've heard that 3d printer worm gears are terribad. but again, i have no clue about what i'm talking about so..
@@JoachimVampire he can add small metal worm gear , actually my perspective is , as worm gears have to much load capacity ans speeed reduction we have to give less force with hand so there will be less chance of breaking of gears

I recommend using a impact drill or 3d print an adapter to hook the gear box to your lugs on your car for max power

I've had a curiosity for a long time: how to extract energy from something that's very heavy, but moving very slowly. I present the challenge to you: how much energy can you extract from a falling weight? Or, how long can you keep a system moving, while only dropping a weight a short distance? Ultimately, the scenario that fascinates me most is glaciers. It would seem there's a very large amount of potential energy there.

While you are there, wait for the tundra to melt, now you increased the arable land 4000% near the artic.
You also get more wind power as a side effect, perhaps even too much of it, as more energy is freed into the system, a couple of tornadoes here and there, not big of a deal.
And your coastal lines might change by a couple of meters. That's a minor deal thou, who would build anything on beaches anyway. Lots of erosion already.

you should try with the 3d printing material that has metal powder in it and you put it in a furnace and it turns solid metal to make some crazy fast ones that dont break
Use cutting oil and low RPMs with a lot of pressure while drilling metal.

Why not try helical or herringbone gears, they would have a more consistent transfer of power. Also what did you use to lubricate them? With the high speeds of the last few gears the lubricant may just get flung off.
You'd need 2, one in the opposite direction because of the angle is also trying to move it sideways

Friction drive would of course add friction but reduce the need for tolerance . Maybe be worth a try.

Besides the actual gearbox being made, I'm interested in knowing how much all the machinery and tools used cost as well as the cost of materials and electricity, for just this one gearbox.
Also, does that 3d printer allow for different levels of hardness or flexibility with the shapes it prints?
It might use more PLA/ABS but if you print the parts at a 45° angle against the bed they become much stronger!

you should make a wimhurst with your 3d prints and see how fast you make the energy spark ? i think if you use the gears it will make the energy higher .
you need bearings and solid gears, your spoked gears are causing significant air resistance
Have you thought about making a compound planetary gearbox?
A cool idea would be to make and adapter of some sort so you can put and impact on there
An impact would be a bad idea, the hammer strikes would likely break the gears.
Probably save some frustration by getting a screwdriver bit extension.

How about making input a gearbox like in a car, so you don't need to apply a lot of force to start that thing and change ratio gradually.

Would not result in anything extraordinary or unpresidented. The laws of physics will not be broken or mocked.
So.
Enough gear ratio that a dropped weight of a few tonnes, pulling a chain, will cause a serious amount of power generated (think power plant), and when at the bottom - disconnect gears while pulling the weight back up, re-clutch the gears, and let gravity power the power plant once more.
Do this with enough gears and you literally have perpetual motion.

Great video. One tip, get some cutting oil and use it when drilling metal. You'll spin the drill slower but it will cut faster and cooler. When it's cooler it'll wear your bits less and cut the metal smoother.

In the early 1980's a New Zealander was watching a coin spinning on its edge but face down until it eventually fell flat and stopped. He consulted a mathematician and an engineer who together designed a reduction gearbox that had enough torque to dislodge a house from its foundation. Are you familiar with it? because as like "Epilogics" infinitely variable transmission that supposedly could handle large torque loadings both seem to have disappeared.

Certain components imo are just simply made easier and faster out of different materials, for example: the handle and base can be made from wood with handtools. Also after initial prototyping, gears can be made from by the aid of fixtures and woodworking jigs. See Mattias Wandel's channel.
making the handle and base from hand tools would take hours for someone who most likely doesn't know how + gears can be made out of other materials in 3d printing and it is most likely quicker to 3d print
