Ka-Bar TDI vs. ShivWorks Clinch Pick - EDC Fixed Blades

  • Let's look briefly at two of my favorite EDC fixed blades, the Ka-Bar TDI and the ShivWorks Clinch Pick! These are both great knives, and top-notch choices for a defensive EDC knife. I have had a TDI for 11 years and carried it off and on throughout, and I have been carrying the Clinch Pick pretty much daily for just over a year.

The TDI is an affordable option, and can be picked up for around $40 dollars. It is also more practical, as it can be used for a lot of every day tasks as well as excelling at self-defense. There are some drawbacks with the TDI sheath, but there are a lot of aftermarket sheaths to address those problems. It is made in Taiwan, from a relatively lower quality steel, but I've have no issue keeping it sharpen, and it is a very solid tough blade. After 11 years of carry and moderate use (it is primarily for self-defense, but I have used it for other tasks when I didn't have another knife), it really shows little wear.
The Clinch Pick is a pure defensive knife. It is a bit odd to hold at first, but the short, heavy, egg shaped handle fits in the palm of the hand and it is really easy to grip either forward or reverse. After some practice, and some work at breaking habits developed from carrying other knives, I am really happy with this knife. The Clinch Pick does cost twice as much as the TDI, around $90-$95 for the production model, or $300-$450 for a USA hand made model. The production model is made from a very corrosion and rust resistant steel, and it holds an edge really really well.
Being someone with a bit of a "dad bod" I find the Clinch Pick really works best for me for self defense EDC, as it is easier to carry. But if you are looking for a practical fixed blade for EDC, there is no beating the TDI. I still leave mine in the car, and if I ever find I have left the house without a knife which happens sometimes, but at least I haven't forgotten the kids yet), I tuck the TDI into my belt, knowing that it won't let me down.
Factor 85 Labs is about sharing the things I enjoy, in a practical way that works for dads and families. Everyday is an experiment, and I am sharing what I am learning about practical ways to balance my interests and hobbies with the everchanging life of a dad with small kids. DIY, EDC, cooking, reviews, first aid, whatever the day brings, I figure out what I think is a practical approach, and share that with you.

i prefer the clinch pick, im a trucker whose been randomly jumped at truck stops for best part of 20 years, so i went with the clinch pick because it was specifically designed for those really up close fights, and its literally saved my life on 8 seperate occasions since i got it, tdi is great in general "i need a weapon" situations, but the clinch pick falls in the "i need a weapon or im going to die" catagory of situations

I have carried a TDI for several years now after introduced to it by my Krav Maga instructor. If you are looking to finish an opponent, this little bad boy will do it easy. I have punched my blade through 1/4 in. plywood with no harm to the blade. If you get the serrated edge like I did, it will cut a seatbelt. In comparison to the clinch, I'll happily stick to my TDI. The TDI knife was designed for LE--the shorter version. It is for mechanical cuts, and a course is available for the knife from TDI in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have taken this class, which is a totally different approach to knife fighting. The shorter version is designed to NOT be able to penetrate body armor in case the officer gets their knife taken. I carried that knife as a police officer and the Last Ditch knife, also. I took the classes and enjoyed learning that usage style vs. my traditional knife fighting classes. I just ordered the other blade to see if it offers me other options. At the end of the day, it is about what you are using the knife to accomplish.

Lately I have been carrying a TOPS “Baghdad Bullet”, which is a small fixed blade. It’s a little more of a utility blade, which is very useful, but can also be used in a self defense situation. I wasn’t crazy about the steel clip and replaced it with the pull dot loops. Definitely an improvement.

I don't have years of experience with knives, but there's something intuitive about the traditional design. I'm sure that I would cut my thumb off if I tried to use a Clinch Pick. I'm glad that knife is available for those who love it. I doubt that I'd ever get one. My first choice for this kind of situation would be a push dagger. Of the three (push dagger, TDI, or Clinch Pick), I can see where the Clinch Pick would be the most comfortable to carry.
I'm disabled, so going to the TDI class wouldn't be feasible financially or physically. I wish I could attend a class like that.

Nice comparison video! I've only ever seen the Clinch Pick used with the blade oriented down and protruding from the bottom off the fist, though. I think the name derives from it being held and used like a ice pick. the idea behind the knife, as explained to me in training, is to "make space" from a fighting clinch in order to transition to a firearm. That said, when held like a pick with the blade oriented down it really takes on the characteristic of a large claw in many respects and I wouldn't be surprised if it drew deep wounds in soft tissue areas either. Thanks again for the great vid!

    • @Doobie603

It is sold as a "grappling knife" and cuts would be made with it using in a pulling motion. I tried it out and trained with it a little bit but I just couldn't stop putting my thumb on the business end. The knife never stopped feeling upside down and wrong to me. I had to stop using it which sucked because I really wanted to like it and it wasn't exactly cheap. I much prefer the TDI or even the HK Plan D.

Depends on the situation and my clothing but I could have one or any combination of these in my EDC rotation. Ka Bar mini 5” combat knife, right hip, angle forward for overhand grip, 2:00 position, under the lcp Max 380acp holster, Ka Bar 1266 modified Tanto horizontal, back of belt, accessible at the 5:00 position, the 1480 TDI Law Enforcement on my left 8:00 position. A Ka Bar TDI Hinderer Hellfire either be on my right 5:00 behind my holster 3:00, 4:00 position or boot mounted. A M&P Special Ops Assisted Open 4” Tanto clipped into right pocket for open carry. Leatherman Charge TTI with all accessories, a Damascus 3.65” blade pocket knife, titanium handle, flipper action, ball bearing pivot for when I don’t want to carry ( or can’t because I’m traveling to a restricted state ) the assisted blade. Etc. I usually only wear one or two at a time but if I have to travel to a dangerous area, I will have three or 4 plus my handgun. People who say they never have the need to carry. Have never been jumped and don’t understand how many criminals are looking for someone to jump right now. Also groups of people will jump on you at the same time in a bad side of LA or Portland for example. If they think it will be worth it they don’t care about your family or your life they will attack and rob you. I had it happen in to me Santa Cruz Ca. I live in Oregon now and open carry on a belt is protected under the Oregon Constitution and can’t be considered concealed or give LE suspension to hold you. Even if it’s under a coat as long as it’s in a belt mounted scabbard. If you have the belt clip and part of your pocket knife showing, that’s compliant with the law too and is considered open carry otherwise any spring action blade or blade over 4” is illegal to conceal in Oregon and there’s no permit or anything to let you do it but you can carry any knife of any type or size, including swords, daggers, automatic knives etc, open carry only. The Pirate Festivals are proof that’s true.

Either of these blades are not made to be your primary weapon for self defense. They are just big enough to get you out of a jam where someone is on top of you or has your back.
They are not meant to reach vital organs. Although, to address your notion of "vital", either of the knives will cut deep enough to reach nerves and tendons necessary to affect grip, access femoral or brachial arteries, or even the groin area.
I love a katana. But it's not practical to carry around. These type of knives are meant for deep concealment. A 14" blade is not.
