  • Hello everybody!
    In this video, I'm changing new rear shock absorbers and upper mounting brackets to my 2012 Opel Astra J. Quite easy job. For me, the hardest part was in the end, because I couldn't get my car's rear higher. I didn't change rear springs, those weren't broken and looked pretty good... I'm sure that I have to do that in the future, those will break in some point.

    Spot on!! Just what i was looking for. How did the car ride afterwards?

      I really didn't notice any difference, maybe, just maybe it feels a little bit harder on the road, and i mean in a good way. Those were Bilstein original replacements, so i wasn't expecting much of a difference. I didn't do any wheel alignment, but it drives straight and after sommer, i can't see any unevenness in my tires.

    Good video. Did they actually need replacing or was it just for the video?

      Nothing was broken. All was original, but about 10 years old. I had this "yearly" (after every two years) inspection coming, i just wanted to be sure. And I also wanted to learn, how to do it.

    You should show the view of the body of the car so that we know it's the right one we're looking for.

    is it really necessary to change the bolts also?

    • @kaukolaDIY
      @kaukolaDIY  Před rokem

      Some bolts are torque-to-yield bolts. I'm not a pro, and i don't know science behind that, but i think bolts, which needs to be very tight, should be changed always. It's recommended, that at least this big lower shock absorber bolt should be changed. Two smaller bolts are not so important to change. I almost every time order a new, original bolts, that's not so big investment.

    Do you have to lower the car before torque wrench ( tighten).. Thanks

    • @kaukolaDIY
      @kaukolaDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, it's recommended, that car should be standing on the wheels, when torque the lower schock absorber bolt to the spec. If i could drive rear wheels to the car ramps or something, i would have much more space under the car. 150Nm + 65 degrees is very tight.

      @@stephenrickards5460 i'll try to make a video of every service, that i have to do to this car. Unfortunately i can't do all by my self. I don't have all the tools, and some things won't be so nice to do outside.

      This car's rear suspension was fine, nothing was broken. All the components were originals, and I wanted to change them. Basically just to learn how to do it. I had a knocking sound problem with front suspension.

      @@kaukolaDIY Can a bad upper mounting bracket cause noise?.
      I have some noise coming on the back right side when going over bumps, looked at the bracket it seems to be in place, wonder if I should take it down and replace it.
      PS: My shocks were changed about half a year ago but not the brackets

      @@ghp0518 i think it's possible, i had problems only with front bracket.
