    This is brilliant. Design concepts simplified to the basic elements, then expanded and explored starting with a simple wire shape. The best video on design i have seen. Thank you for sharing.

    I just rewatched this video, because I’m starting the design phase of my jewelry education. Could you possibly show us how to design on a flat piece of silver, that requires sawing, and removal of negative space? Thanks, Greg!!

    May I ask does forging mean fire and hammering? Or just manipulating hammering and bending. ?

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  Před 2 měsíci

      Hello Tish, Great question. Forging means hammering and shaping the metal. There are 2 different forging techniques. 1. Hot forging: This is used when "blacksmithing" and forging steel. Steel must be worked or forged when it is red hot. This is when the metal is soft and can be hammered (forged) and shaped. When steel is cooled, it becomes hard again. 2. Cold forging: This is used in silversmithing. Silver can be "annealed" ( heated to a dull cherry red ) and then cooled. The silver when it is heated becomes soft, when it is cooled, it remains soft. Because the silver is soft when it is cool, we can hammer (forge) and shape the silver while it is cool. Check out my playlist and watch the Forging Silver Wires playlist. I demonstrate forging techniques. You may be interested. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood

    Hey Greg ! Great video as always :), I had a question for you, I’m attempting to make a ring from a 90% silver coin , I would like to set a cabochon in a bezel type setting , but I was curious if using silver solder with a higher content of silver than the band (being 90%) would have any negative effect on the solder ,
    such as - upon being polished will it have an uneven coloration ? Due to the difference in silver content , will the solder have an uneven strength ? If not I’ll be relieved but I just wanted to make sure before I commit, as my resources are scarce haha
    I’m open to suggestions and trying something new ! Thank you !!

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  Před 3 lety

      Hello Zozo, Yes, you can use the silver solder on the coin silver. It will have a slight color variation but if your solder joints are good, it will not show very much. The strength will not be a problem. You can breath easy now!! Good Luck. Greg Greenwood

    What is forging?

      Hello Paul, Forging is a metalsmithing technique using hammers to form metal. Check out my videos "Sterling Silver Forging Techniques" and " Next Step Advanced Silver Forging Techniques". They are in my playlists on my home page. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood
