Developing your first jewelry collection - don’t make these mistakes!

- From my years in the Industry, I have seen it all - Designers wanting to sample a whole jewelry range at once, and others sampling in batches. In this video I dive into the most common mistake new Designers unconsciously make. By following our customers brands closely, it is clear that having a lot to offer doesn't always result on a lot of sales; In fact, most of the times, having a smaller selection to start with seems to be most cost-efficient, successful and can also create a higher engagement with your customers - a smaller selection means that you've put more thought on each piece and you have a story behind every design.

I am very happy I found your channel! I wish to propose a topic for a future video and that would be planning in terms of seasonality and what is your experience in terms of what is best for a starting designer - two collections per year, launch around holidays, how much time before running out of stock should one reorder and and so on. Another topic is gems and maybe what your production is able to do for clients? I would also like to know if you schedule calls or give quotations if the business is still in the planning phase, so that the designer can make a proper business plan with exact expenses?
Those are great topics - I was going to do one of the stock planning/inventory as that's an important discussion. Since I pre-record and launch the CZcams videos 2-3 weeks in advance, let me answer your questions now ;-)
Typically my customers will have a spring/summer and an autumn/winter collection - planning at least 3-6 months in advance. You definitely want to be aware of holidays (ie Chinese New Year holiday in Feb apparently can last as long as 1 month - sucks if you have something lined up for Valentines Day!!!) How much one should re-order depends on how quickly you're getting sales but my turnaround is typically anywhere between 4-7weeks (I believe that's average for most suppliers) to give you an idea.
Re gems - my plant holds some stock but we also source them as it's more cost effective but I'll elaborate more on that more in a separate video :-)

I am a jewellery designer maker but I haven't been in the industry for years as a mum of 2 and I have decided to get back into it. My designs have always been quite time consuming, I use a lot of the chasing and repoussé technique and carve my own wood in my designs. I know this wouldn't be commercially viable doing by myself so I have been looking at manufacturing companies where I would be able to send my master sample instead so I can produce more pieces but still have that handmade touch. I would love your advice if that sounds reasonable? As a jewellery manufacturer, you would have more insight.

I'm curious: What training and understanding of fabrication/making is needed or better yet required, for jewelry designers? I'm thinking of changing careers.

When placing your first bulk order, how many would you say is a good first amount? 25 of each design, 50 of each design...? I'd love to have enough to sell, but also don't want to be sitting on a load of stock that won't sell. :)
Hey Eleanor, good question! Right so based on my customers placing their orders, my minimum is 20pcs per design I would say for all of my start up jewellery designers (ie first ever stock they are ordering) they almost always order that minimum - if it were me, I would too because I wouldn't want to spend more than I'd have to. For suppliers, they'd want you to order as much as possible but I don't think you would sell 20 pcs per design within a few weeks - it'll spread over the next few months... Be sure to find out what the turnaround is though because once certain lines of your stock start reducing you'll need to plan on replenishing the order sooner than later (consumers hate waiting right?!) Having said that, once my customers get a feel on what their best sellers are, they would order maybe 30 or 40 pcs per design of that stock because they know that it'll eventually sell. What you don't want is to invest in too much stock upfront (hence we provide smaller quantities). You'll be investing a lot already in your PR, social media, packaging etc as well as the upfront development costs for samples to be made, so I personally wouldn't go crazy in the beginning... Just wait to see what sells wait because a lot of my customers tend to be surprised at what ends up being their best sellers. I do have customers that may order 50+ per design in their first order but that's because they have been selling these designs for a while and are changing suppliers, so they already know what's selling well. But for the first time jewellery designers, I would keep them low and think 20 or even 30pcs per design should be a sufficient amount to start off with. Hope that makes sense :-)

If I have an idea that I can make with inexpensive material but I feel it would be better in semi precious and precious material , how do I get it made?
For example the Pura Vida bracelet company started out with inexpensive materials but popular demand requested that they start a line of higher quality material
At Thai Design, we only work with Sterling Silver, Solid Gold and Brass (for giftware pieces only). Most manufacturers would require either a detailed sketch with measurements and thorough description of the design or a CAD (which would be ready for casting). If your pieces would be produced by stamping, the process would be different. I recommend you to visit manufacturers’ websites in order to evaluate if your designs fit within their production capabilities and if so, contact them after and enquire regarding their process as each manufacturer has their own approach. I think you mean "rose theme" 🙂 I used it as an example to illustrate the importance of creating "themes" or "stories" to your Collections, so all items seems to be part of a bigger collection. Hope that makes sense 🙂
Hi, what is a good amount for a collection when you’re designing your 1st one? I’d like to make jewelry I’d be able to sell to store and want to be careful how I design so I look professional. Thanks. Is 8pieces too little or do I need more? My color palette is comprised of 6 colors and was thinking of just offering 3 in the beginning. Your advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Hiya. 8 is not little at all. We've had customers start with around 5 which I would say is the minimum. In additoin, offering or starting off with 3 colours sounds reasonable and then you can build to the 6 in the near future. However, I wouldn't say staring with 6 colours is too excessive either! Hi Jay. If a customer presents us with a sketch we will need to charge to re-create that into a CAD format. The prices vary depedning on design and complexity. Alternatively we're happy to receive a final CAD from customers and also recommend that they may prefer to work directly with a CAD designer.

Hi, can you gibe me an idea of how much i need to invest In For my first Collection
It depends on how far along the development process you are, how many designs you have in your collection and on the designs themselves. There are too many variables to give an estimate unfortunately, but I would say to be prepared for any development costs which is the process and part of producing the actual sample. Most or many manufacturers also require a deposit upfront.
Do you manufacture jewelry using 316 stainless steel
We manufacture in Sterling Silver and Solid Gold, we don’t use stainless steel.
Do you have to be a good drawer to become a designer ?
Not necessarily but I think you do need to have some level of help or assistance when you get to the stage of having a sample produced with a supplier. Manufacturers prefer a sketches/drawings that are very clear, hence we provide a guideline as to what we expect when a customer sends us a drawing as we don;t want to waste time guesssing what the design is or what measurements they are. We appreciate that new designers starting off may not know the level of detail required but that's why we try to provide as much help from the offset what we expect and we hope other manufactureres do the same too. In time, our customers understand what's required so that when they submit their next collection or design for example, the level of clarity is a lot more pronounced and clear. x

Wow. I always wanted to make my own design but don't know where to start from and how to. Like hich software to use to start of with the design and where ro give our design so they can create it in 3D. I have no knowledge and don't know where to seek help from. Though I always always dreamed of designing accessories but again. No idea how. Can I know which software is the best for creating 2D designs and how do you start with all the manufacturing process? Like I feel very helpless and demotivated cuz there's no guidence and there's nobody who knows about these things. Sorry for the long para. But I really need your help from the start to the end🥲
Hello, may I free some advice.
You can start by simply drawing or sketching or the design your yourself.
Include dimensions, metal choices, colours, weight etc etc.
You can use apps like Procreate or Sketchbook to digitally design a piece of jewelry.
Then you can take that design and work with a 3D designer to have that piece refined and made into a sample of wax.
From there you can cast the wax and produce your piece to finish.
That’s what I’m doing and as Bench Jeweler, many individuals and brands at my place of work do the same thing.

Yes, Kerry-Ann is quite right. Alternatively, from your sketch you can have it re-created into a CAD form and then 3D printed but into resin. This is our usual practice because we mass produce, so we make a mould from the resin to which we inject wax into, to create a tree for casting.
