Yea, they are death matches literally. I was at an F1 boat race in Little Washington one year and one of the drivers flipped, nearly drowned if not did, but ultimately succumbed to the injuries from the wreck. Blink of an eye.

No those things can stand wind speeds of 160+ mph it just came off then because it was going to anyway around the next corner

Growing up on the water, I was always told when it comes to the sensation of speed that 1mph on water feels like 2mph on land.
Of course everyone's perception of speed is different, and the type of watercraft you're on plays a role, but IME that calculation was always pretty close for me. We had a 19ft roundabout that'd do 55mph with optimal conditions, and it felt like doing a ~100mph in a car. Doing similar on a Waverunner felt even faster since there wasn't a body of a boat around you.

Big horsepower car and boat racing takes big nuts. Water may seem softer to wreck on compared to a dragster decimating itself on concrete, but when your pushing over 200mph that water is pretty much solid death.
I'd say they're safer... There is an air supply, and an emergency release hatch. But these things are REALLY LOUD! I go to the races... Columbia cup race is featured here! Stoked

You not know what hydroplane is?
Theres a difference between a boat hydroplaning at speed and a boat with hydrofoils...
They are boats. But they are designed to fly on the water. In an ideally set up rig, only the propeller touches the water consistently, while the front of the boat teeters back and forth on the two front sponsons. Unlimiteds are really the only class of hydro racing that use turbine engines like this. You will find other engine types in smaller classes.
Even after 9 years, i keep coming back to this video. One of the greatest pieces i have ever seen! From the high paced racing, to the drama in the wrecks, all pulled together by a beautiful soundtrack. Just chefs kiss all the way around!

@@nacecity225 There sure is a point of time where the propellers speed matches with the framerate of the GoPro causing the propeller to appear stationary, this effect can be seen on rotors of all kind. (Looks very neat with helicopters). In real life the light from the object is reflected / emitted equally over the entire rotation so instead of changing speed / freezing the rotating part starts to resemble a semi-opaque disc.
@@MrViiz the speeds don't have to match though, they can also be whole multiples of one and other.

+Nertzi the vehicle ripping apart dissipates energy and minimizes risk of injury to the pilot. similar to formula 1, where the pilot sits in a reinforced monocoque and the rest of the car is designed to break away on impact.
+Nertzi yes, the pod they sit in is designed to rip away from the whole boat during a crash for safety reasons
+Shixma thats incorrect, your thinking of methane drag boats/hydros. Those have cockpits that indeed break away rather easily and also have a parachute attached to the backside of them. These, H1 Unlimited hydros contain a tubular steel frame wrapped in carbon fiber and epoxied glass thats integrated into the rest of the hull, making the structure extremely rigid. The windshield is from an F-16 fighter jet, and there is an escape hatch on the bottom of the cockpit, allowing the driver to escape in case the boat lands upside down in an accident

I've seen these particular boats from a lot of angles (many of these shots are from Tri-Cities, WA), but I was amazed at some of these. The shot from directly above the Miss Madison/Oberto was stellar and gave me chills. And the underwater shot of the $20K prop starting up was phenomenal. These guys a run a souped up turbine at the limits with a skid fin dragging them around corners at 200. Great video!
This video is awesome because I live in the tri cities where this was shot and the boat races are really cool, so the fact that GoPro has a video of them is just amazing! And I loved the shot of the blue bridge too!

I'm all for "living a little" but this is too much. Those things are just really fast coffins. One wrong wave and you could be out. Like out out. Cool video though.
You'd be surprised at how safe these things are, with the evolution of performance also came a huge evolution in safety equipment.
Whats the point of living if you dont have fun? I'd rather die at 25 knowing I spent every minute doing what I dreamed of rather than dying at 100 and working in an office all day doing nothing
