They needed to make a Spanish and English versions of this also. I wished that the Cubans would have done the Spanish version and the American communist parry the English one. The English version by Paul Robeson has different lyrics than the official Russian one.

Also note, that there were many equal nationalities - latvians, lithuanians, estonians, ukrainians, belarusians, kazakhs and many others. It was an internationalist state. That's the thing though. East Germany never understood itself as any kind of successor to or continuation of the German Reich. They were pretty content with the Federal Republic taking that burden off of them. Additionally, they claimed all the Fascists were steering the country from the West, with the honest workers of Central (now East) Germany being their first victims.
