That's the thing though. East Germany never understood itself as any kind of successor to or continuation of the German Reich. They were pretty content with the Federal Republic taking that burden off of them. Additionally, they claimed all the Fascists were steering the country from the West, with the honest workers of Central (now East) Germany being their first victims.
