📜 The Story: This cadet was caught crying alone at his graduation for a sad reason. It’s tradition for graduating cadets to stand still until their loved ones gave them a hug but for this boy, his family was unable to afford plane tickets. His friends were greeted by their family all around him but he was the only person, standing alone without family by his side. So when this mother saw his loneliness, she comforted him and her extraordinary gesture made others embrace him too. This bittersweet moment shows just how kind strangers can be to one another.

This happened when my stepson graduated boot csmp 20 years ago. One young man standing alone. I went up to him and said that I had no children of my own and would he do me the honor by being my son today? He happily accepted and we spent the day together. Twenty years later, he still calls me Mama.

@denabatt I do agree that these traditions may be heartbreaking for those who do not have loved ones to hug them, but they also lead to beautiful relationships like the one described here.
They also allow family to have the special memory of hugging their loved one after graduation. Like me for example, my brother graduated bootcamp and when I saw him standing there, I ran up to him and hugged him as hard as I could. That is a beautiful memory I will cherish forever, and taking away this tradition would mean that others wouldn't be able to share in that memory.

There were at least two fellow cadets who commiserated with him - the one on his left, who wiped away tears, and the one on his right with his back to us who patted him on the shoulder and chest. Thank God for the mother who comforted him in his time of need.
My parents didn't come to 1 of my school debates i ignored them for a year 😂😂it went on and on
Just a little balloon buster!! She doesn’t embrace him! She pats him on the chest which others join in to do as well. He is supposed to be hugged not patted . She only made it worse by not offering the kid a hug. If you watched closely, he doesn’t break formation. He remains standing at attention because out of all those people banging on him NO ONE gives the kid a hug.

Awww! My son had his uk army parade in February & there was boy from figi who had no family 2 watch & all the troops gathered round him at the end & sang his national anthem. It was the proudest moment ive had.

When we are children, we are born into a family. When we are adults, we get to CHOOSE our family. Looks to me that this young man has a lot of family he didn't know he had. Nice to see communities taking care of each other. If we don't take care of each other, we are lost indeed. That's just what Mama's do! After I reunited with my daughter at attention, she told me how two of her friends had no one coming to see them for graduation. Hugged them and spent the day with them... that was 6 years ago and we still stay in touch ❤❤❤

Unfortunately, not every family has the means to travel to where someone is graduating. My family couldn't afford the round-trip tickets (and hotel stay) from Louisiana to Florida.
But they had made sure I had lots of letters at Mail Call, so I had support that way.
When my brother went to boot camp in the same city where I lived, I wrote to him every day and attended his graduation.
People do what they can.
Thanks for letting him know that your family can't be there but the loving kind strangers show the cadet loving words and tender touches. May he be blessed by GOD.
