Bobby Fischer crushes Chilean Chess Champion in 23 moves | 1960

- Featured is a Round 8 game from the Leipzig Olympiad of 1960. It was played between Chilean chess champion Rene Letelier Martner and Bobby Fischer on October 24th. International Master Letelier won the Chilean Chess Championship 5 times (1957, 1959, 1960, 1964 & 1972). With 4...0-0, rather than the most popular d6, Fischer invited Letelier's e-pawn into his house. That invitation was accepted and soon Fischer would be confronted with an optically menacing white pawn center of 4. How one ought to handle such a central structure is especially valuable for chess minds who look to improve. Fischer demonstrates how to dismantle white's center, and adds double exclamation marks with his flashy final move.

I had the honor of speaking personally with René Letelier, and he was a true gentleman. The great thing about him is that he became an International Master without even being a professional chess player. He worked in a bank, and in his free time or vacations he played tournaments. Regarding this game, he mentioned that he just enjoyed every move that Fischer made on the board (Letelier played 3 times against Fischer, being defeated 2 times, and beating Bobby 1 time).
Sorry my English. It's not my first language :)
This is perfect english
Very cool! Thank you for sharing that. Your English is excellent. :)
What a privilege, uncle Psico!
I’d love to see the game where he won, if anybody could repost.
A man like him would say the same thing about meeting with you. He must have been a very good banker.
It's a great day when Jerry returns from hiatus
😎
I'm certainly not a good chess player. I think your narration was perfect. It gave me insights as to what the great players are thinking. It's the best chess video I've seen. Thanx.
What a beautiful game! I’ve never seen this before. One of the many reasons Bobby Fischer may have been the greatest player ever
Good to see you back. Well done analysis. Thanks
Look who is here chessnetwork . After a long time

Jerry, your videos are some of the most instructive on the internet. My top 3 favorite CZcamsrs are you, Gotham and Daniel Naroditsky. Gotham teaches you how to understand broad, overarching concepts like a master. Daniel teaches you how to understand the fine details like a master. And you teach us how to realize what master-level thinking even looks like. Seriously. I studied tactics and positional chess for years and couldn't advance past 1200. But your Beginner to GM series totally revolutionized the way I looked at the board. I gained more in the 2 years since I watched those videos than I did in my previous 5+ years of serious chess study.
I really liked the way the game was described. Each move was analyzed with possible options, giving the viewer opportunity to see how Fischer developed his strategy. Some commentators are too fast, too slick. This was much better.
sneaky combined expression with “this one’s toast, however you slice it.”
I was eating a grilled cheese sandwich when he delivered that line. Always cut diagonal. Had to nod along
Haven't heard from you for a while Jerry ... hope all is well with u
Thank you Damon. Hope all is well on your end as well.
@@ChessNetwork thanks man ... great game 👏 👌 👍
Jerry’s existence is unknowable, for mortals cannot understand Gods
@@looinrims but gods understand men are mortal gods and gods are immortal men
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ why though, gtfoh,we talking about chess here
Honestly, there is nobody else that can cover a game of chess better than Jerry, not even the professional announcers that cover games live!
Too lengthy
@@Ashrafpary No one intelligent agrees.

Love Jerry. But Hikaru is better when he covers post games. He has deeper understanding and access to better engines.
I think I'm speaking in name of every one here when I say: we need more videos, Jerry. We love your videos.
Some strange complaints here. Is it distracting to go into variations? People don't like hearing positional considerations in a game analysis? I found this really informative, and I like your presentation. Good stuff!
The legendary analysis videos are back!!
Please post more contents, I love your analysis and voice!!
We love Jerry's videos. His analysis is excellent. Jerry, we hope you will review some of the games at this year's Candidates Tournament.
A wonderful analysis, as always. Thanks for the consistent quality.
What a final move, I had to pause because I was like wtf, until I found that it was threatning bishop b6 checkmate, very beautiful
it feels like ages since you did a vid , keep it coming
Beautiful video!! Thank you, Jerry.
Thank you Carlos.
You have a wonderfully accessible way if explaining genius-level chess to average players like me. Thank you!
Thank you George 👍
I was just thinking yesterday “man it’s been a while since jerry uploaded”. Always a joy to see you uploading, especially the analysis vids!
Greetings from the UK. Great analysis, I like your deliberate presentation. Do not let the negative comments effect your style.

Hey, Jerry. Been watching you for more than 14 years now and I pretty much owe you my accent. Thanks for the chess analysis and English that you have taught me during this huge period of time. And I really would like to see your face while listening to you. Please keep it in your mind. You are excellent . Take care. 🙏🙏

Jerry is a legend for all of us but please don't ask him to show his face if he doesn't want to.
@@ciaranlyons825 i agree
@@ciaranlyons825 well, I just wanted to see the legendary chess player and English teacher who helped me a lot to be a native speaker. I think more people would followed him if he showed himself on his videos, though. Best regards. 😊
@@ciaranlyons825 Relax, champ. He’s just asking.
Your analysis of those games is top-notch. Your explanations are easy to follow. Keep up the fantastic work!
No better chess analysis videos than Jerry's. It's just what it is.
Bobby Fischer checkmate sequence was absolute genius I didn’t see that one coming…👏👏👏👏👏
You have such a soothing voice .These videos are like chess ASMR.
Welcome back Jerry
Quality over quantity. Watching your powerful, well thought analysis always shows me, you're on another level. Thanks for your effort!
Thank you for the compliment 👍
I was very pleased with how you could analyze the game without really distracting from the game itself. That is a gift that many You Tube Chess analysts do NOT have. For some reason, you were able to get me to see the brilliance of each Fischer move without getting me "lost."
Before your video, I watched an interview with a grey-bearded Bobby Fischer from sometime in the 1980s or early 90s. In the interview he professed to HATE what the game of chess had become. He said that the study of Openings variations had turned the game into a contest of memorization and it had eliminated most of the creativity from the game.
In this game you analyzed, you demonstrate what made Fischer great. He reveled in diverging from a standard opening line and exploiting the confusion of his opponent who continued in the standard line, believing it had been proven the best way to proceed. Here Fischer showed the superiority of the creative mind over a standard opening book.
In current times, computers can sometimes reveal new lines of analysis that humans may have abandoned. But many computer programs adhere to Opening Books just like humans.
Good to have you back on CZcams. Thanks Jerry and keep up the good work.
People claiming the video is slow but you have to go slow to really understand all the nuances about the moves. All blitz players I guess
I knew mister Letelier, who once showed me precisely this game and told me how he has been taught a lesson. Mr Letelier died some years ago. He was a very humorous person, funny and witty. I was under his coaching for a while, but he - and me- expended most of the time with little and funny histories of his life and chess player. I will never forget a sight of him analyzing a game with a bottle at his side....
Dude I'm glad you finally upload video.
Hope you're doing fine bud
Missed you, Jerry. Glad you’re still alive.
Calling up all the boys to tell them new chessnetwork video dropped
That was beautiful chess in my opinion.
Thank you very much, this is a great video. Your analysis is very helpful for improving one's understanding of strategic and positional concepts. In this case, it was a study of how to deal with an immediate mass advance of center pawns in the very beginning of the game, using a Fischer game for illustration. Using classical games like this as a way to illustrate important strategic concepts is a very good idea. I will start following your videos.
I never described taking a piece as 'chopping' until I found Jerry. I enjoy the color he brings into game analysis.
Nice to see u analyze again jerry ur amazing❤
oh my god a new Jerry video
Do not curse
I'm bemused by the comments complaining about narration and too "much talking"! This is called analysis people, talking and going back and forward. If you don't like it just skip using the arrow key if you've heard of it!
No, and they all do this. They are not analyzing the moves of these worlds best chess players, or they would just stick to their moves, trying to explain why they moved there, and not interject what else could have been done. Not one game have I seen anybody describe as a Bobby Fisher game, tries to explain what Fischer was thinking only, (and his opponent). They always have to add their own options, that the best in the world rejected. Not one of these guys will beat my computer game on line either, (grand master chess 3). Come on, "show me what you would do", even at the easy adult level, with your own game. These guys are as worthless as a philosophy class.
@@EarthSurferUSA This is a ridiculous criticism. Theory has moved on now. If this position or opening comes up again, modern theory will put Fischer’s position into trouble. It’s great analysis and teaching material to show modern theory as well as what was played at the time.
@@EarthSurferUSA In order to fully appreciate each move, you need to show the options which "the best in the world rejected". The reason why one move was made, and the reason why all other moves were not made, these are one and the same. Analysis videos like this are for chess enthusiasts who enjoy the complexity and richness of the game. It's fine if you don't appreciate it, chess isn't for everyone. But personally I love these videos and Jerry has some of the best insight and analysis on CZcams, and he's actually both a good player and good instructor on top of that.
I crave Jerry's game analysis videos. I always learn something new from each video. Thanks as always. Hope you could do more.
BEAUTIFULLY explained, and what a great game you've shared with us. Thank you so much for the excellent content.
Finally a new video, Jerry! Cheers from Ukraine!
Perfect analysis, great job, really enjoyed the detailed insight, spot on!
your style of teaching is just the best I love it so much thank you!
ive read some complaints about itbelow, but i liked your "what-if" spewculations to show why the players did, or did NOT do, what they did.
Love the poetic finish ... typical Fischer
Great analysis Jerry
Great video, keep up the good work. I appreciate the commentary and different ways the game could've played out between the two.
Eyyy a new Jerry video is always a delight
Bobby and Jerry, I love it :) thank you for video :)
Fishers creativity was so far beyond his contemporaries.
Another great video. Thx
For those who don't know, this was game 21 of Fischer's great book "My 60 Memorable Games." I was so taken by this finish that I included it as part of Lichess' practice section on "Attraction!" Check out Attraction puzzle #8 and I think you'll spot it instantly now!
Chess is the most complex game ever, but it’s when you watch games like these, you can really appreciate how awesome it is
Excellent analysis
Thank you
Keep ‘em up Jerry. You’re a true gift. My kiddo loves your stuff.
It's nice to see the expression "position before submission" merging its way from the jujitsu world into chess.
chess can express so much things .
I remember a guy saying that BJJ (with gi) was just chess but with grips and leverage instead of the pieces lol.
One could say similar things about Judo. You can't get a good throw against someone thta expects it without having a really good set up/position first
Amazing analysis, Like always……. Wouldn’t change a thing!
jerry thank you for this, i watched this video last night and the opening situation is exactly what's happening in a correspondence game i'm playing right now! it's nice to feel at least slightly prepared!
great stuff as always cheers jerry
Very interesting analysis; thanks!
I really enjoy your instructional videos Jerry! Some other chess channels instruct way too fast and therefore lose my attention. I hope you don't ever change your format to appease the speedy Gonzales blitz chess geniuses.
I like how you break things down. Your coverage of these games are superb
This is pure joy
“This one is toast however you slice it.” Nice choice of game teacher Jerry.
I noticed that one when I was editing. It works well! :)
Good to see you uploading to youtube again!
If Stockfish says Fischer made a mistake, I suggest Stockfish needs to go back and analyse a bit more to see why it got it wrong..
I enjoy your video style. Thanks!
Your videos are so educative and relaxing at the same time!
Very nice thinking for analyzing every position. The final queen move was amazing
Your game explanation videos are always a pleasure to watch
glad you explained how it was a mate.. i didn't see it at first.. great vid
Great video, Jerry. Really enjoyed it and learned a lot!
Have not played chess for many years. My interest was renewed watching this video. Hope to see more coming.
Bobby was the man! Excellent narration and I appreciate the variations you present. Thank you!
Been following your material since 2009. Great stuff as always, Jerry!
Glad to see you back.
Thank you for finding these Fischer games and taking the time to make a video for us. How can a human being play like Bobby Fischer. No amount of training can produce moves he made in this game. The man was inspired. I enjoy watching and hearing your great voice. Thanks Jerry.
Really? You’re just gonna open with hi everyone??!! Where the heck have you been??
I’ve been doing plenty of playing, but simply haven’t felt up to putting a video together for awhile.
@@ChessNetwork well, for what it’s worth, you were very missed and you are very well loved in this circle. Good to hear your voice again.
Thanks for video Jerry been itching for a new one from ya!
Beautiful game, beautiful analysis. Thanks Jerry.
Anybody who follows Fischer knows this game was in his “My 60 most memorable games”.
The game is a fine illustration of how White can over extend a pawn center and wind up getting crushed by Black against the King’s Indian Defence.
Really enjoyed this! Thank you.
Very nice commentary. Thanks.
Love these analyses
Thanks for all your endlessly instructive content. You're the biggest X-factor in my play, I swear.
Love you Jerry ❤️
Thank you, Jerry. That was excellent analysis and explanation.
Keep the analysis coming. There was something there at the end I didn't follow dealing with the possibilities if no resignation was offered...but I probably overlooked something. lol
Thanks for the game and walking us through. Your kindness are an encourage for us. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Couldn't tell which moves were Fischers. Not very good walk.
Thanks for the awesome videos, Jerry! 🙂
Thank you for the analysis.

Wow!! Sick final move!!! Thanks for another masterpiece Jerry! Cheers!
Thanks-- that's a terrific instructional game! "Coordination" is the lesson
Thank you Ernest
That game was superb, that's a piece of work !...
It was. I hope the person running the channel considers doing a recap at the end of videos to show it move by move in order with no interruptions. Breaking down the possible variations can disorient you from the flow of the game at times.
Absolutely brilliant, love your insights. Amazing
Thank you Mani.
