For my Passive Division run during the staff match portion of Moons Out Goons Out 2024, I used a borrowed prototype Boombox from Q, with an AGM Clarion thermal scope. The Boombox is essentially a Honey Badger scaled up to AR10 size, chambered for 8.6mm Blackout. With a 12" barrel and Porq Chop suppressor, it was crazy quiet, and the 300gr subsonic FMJ from Gorilla Ammo that I was shooting made a great CLANG on the targets. The Clarion is a large thermal from AGM, with the option for either 2x or 3x optical zoom. I went for 2x, and was unfortunately surprised by how difficult some of the targets were to find. Last year I did not have the same issues with a similar thermal scope from AGM, and so I didn't expect them this year. Well, live and learn...

A thermal scope on a rifle is certainly an occasion where the PVS-14 Gang's "its just as good" cope actually has some merit. (Its me. I'm PVS-14 Gang.)
The best would be a combination of thermal and image-intensified NV. I believe I have seen some videos about such devices but I don't know if they have been fielded yet.

We tried flares last year; they were unfortunately a significant fire hazard.

to be fair, an anti-tank mine will only go off if an extremely heavy heavy vehicle, ie a tank, drives over it. No army wants to waste an entire anti tank mine on a person, that's why they have anti personnel mines.

In thermal cameras meant for making accurate temperature measurements, the brief pauses are when a shutter closes and the camera re-calibrates itself. The shutter has a temperature sensor on it and is made of thermally conductive material so it is at a very uniform temperature. Without this calibration, the absolute accuracy of the camera would depend on the temperature of the camera electronics AND the uniformity of the pixels would get poorer. However, when you are only using the camera to detect and target objects with a heat signature, I would think that this calibration could be made much less frequent or maybe even completely eliminated. I wonder if this thermal scope is using an off-the-shelf thermal camera module which is not optimized for non-measurement applications.
This is not the context I'm used to seeing the words "goon" and "poppers" in. It's still usually boys playing with their toys, though.

That's the point of using thermal.
If you on the other hand wanted to simulate a fight against the predator, the targets should have been also covert with a camo net for the infrared guys! 😂
This raises the question of whether zombies are warm-blooded, or if they even have blood.
@@AshleyPomeroyThey should have blood, but probably wouldn't be warm. At least if we go by reanimated corpses. Fungus-controlled humans would still be warm.

What are the rules about using Tracer ammo? If allowed, I feel like that would help you walk your rounds in on a target you are struggling to hit
Not allowed because of fire restrictions in the area. I don't think they would really help anyway.
@@ForgottenWeaponsmaybe not with thermal, but could they just barely cast a little bit of light downrange? I know that's a stress and maybe ridiculous, but possibly worth a little experiment on the darkest on nights 🤔🧐

.358 Win, with "the right bullet" should work in a similar "niche" as the 8.6 variant. To cater for the "sub-sonic" loadings, a faster twist than "SAAMI" might be required.

I find the challenge of night shooting interesting and the results humbling.
Very nice video. Technical with how the equipment went while still being realistic with how your shooting ability was. The cross hair feed is really cool. Are go pro attachments allowed on daytime shooting matches? It'd be cool to see these during the day with more detail.

Another great vid for us normal people. What do you think caused the issue with the thermal not acting like the previous years thermal? How do you fall on the thermal vs NVG for folks that cant afford both and actual real life use?

I’ve had good luck just changing color pallets on non heated targets. Especially if the target is the same color as the pallet (ie black or white)

I would be very interested in how the thermal would have done with a real life style target that gave off heat. But even without heat being able to see some of them was impressive.
I want whatever that camera guy was using, thought it was daylight, and wondered what all the fumbling around was for! I would not want to go up against nightvision if I didn't have any for sure!

It wouldn't be a gun Jesus competition if Ian didn't deliberately handicap himself in some shape or form. He seems to make a habit of doing that, wether it's choosing to use a bad firearm choice, or a bad sight choice.
That gear choice might also be why it seems to me that Ian has such trouble with mag changes.
I shot the match with an AK and had one really good reload, the rest were pretty bad. I did do a bit of practice reloading under nods before the match but when you add in the stress of a timer, its really difficult to reload when you can hardly see the rifle. I think Ian, similar to me, also lost a lot of time on stowing the magazine. I didn't run my belt because no pistols, so I didn't have a dump pouch. I ended up mostly stuffing mags in between my plate carrier and my chest to retain then. Trying to shove mags back into a pouch under these conditions was also tough

It was clean miss just over the right edge of the plate, and that was a ordinary dust cloud made by bullet hitting the dirt.

Wouldn't matter. Since its a digital scope, parallax from the screen to your eye doesn't exist because the reticle is on the screen.
