Not having Dustin Hoffman on this list is criminal. I had to skim back through it to make sure I didn't miss him, AND check his Wikipedia page to make sure he's American. He is and I didn't.
Absolutely agree! He and Gene Hackman have to be there!
Absolutely right! I did the exact same thing.
Thank you!! Dustin Hoffman is a genius chameleon character actor . F***ing ridiculous.
Very snubbed list
Oh wow. I totally forgot about him.
Joaquin Phoenix not being on here is absolutely insane
It’s freaking blasphemy I just got done watching gladiator and it doesn’t make any sense!!!! AM I NOT MERCIFUL!!!!!!!???????
Not only Joaquin Phoenix but also his brother River Phoenix.
They are both not from this world.
He’s not a top 20 actor of all time
I believe he's not American
Who would you take off the list to put them on it
Paul Newman is just an “honorable mention.” Has everyone at WatchMojo gone mad?
Wow that's insane
No Bette Davis?! Not even an honorable mention?
One of my favorite actors of all time has to be Samuel L. Jackson. I just love his presence on the screen and if there was anyone born to be an actor, it would be Samuel L. Jackson
He popularised the word Motherf**ker 😂
@@shadrachgeorge108no Bernie Mac did
The thing is, he doesn't really act, he is exactly the same in every single appearance on screen. I think he has an amazing screen presence, but I don't think he is a great actor. He doesn't "act", he literally is just being himself in every movie he stars in.
And his story is so inspiring.
@@vanhattfield8292same as Sly Stallone
Paul Newman deserved to be more than just a mention. He is definitively among the best actors ever
Agree!
Putting Robert Redford (as an actor) on the top 20 list without placing Paul Newman in the top 10...is an unbearable mystery.
Agree
He’s a much better actor than Redford. Even better looking, if that’s possible. Interestingly enough, Paul’s wife, Joanne, was arguably the best of all three. She took a back seat to her husband’s career and pumped out babies. Today, I doubt that would happen.
Agreed. He created the modern male dramatic role. He should be top 3.
Robert De Niro saying « are you talking to me? » is from Taxi Driver (1976)
You’re so right! The caption said Mean Streets and I knew that wasn’t it.
You know WatchMojo is biased when 2 time Oscar winner and 3 time Oscar nominee Sean Penn is not even included as an honorable mention.
💯
My Top 3
1) Pacino
2) De Niro
3) Nicholson

Where is Clint Eastwood and Vin Diesel?
John Cazale. Dude was a phenomenal actor who’s career and life was cut too short.
Isn’t there like an interesting fact about him like every film he was in was nominated or even won an Oscar
@@tjwhisenhunt1089
Yes. They were nominated or won best picture.
Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman should absolutely be on the list.
True, but who do you take off?
@@bevonbryan2476 Probably Robert Redford and Jane Fonda🤔
Dean Stockwell should have been on this list his career spanned from 1945-2015 he survived being a child actor in old hollywood and made it his whole life with zero controversies and more importantly stole the show in whatever he did.
that doesn't mean he's one of the greatest American thespians of all time. No.
There’s a bunch of American actors that were quintessential movie stars that you overlooked. John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Faye Dunawaye, William Holden, Henry Fonda, Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, and Clint Eastwood.
Was gonna say how does Clint Eastwood not get a mention
How about Steve McQueen and Gene Hackman?
Cary Grant is not american
@@Jr.Corleone He was a dual citizen.
Stallone too
Brando, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, De Niro, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams, Leonardo di Caprio, Tom Hanks, Robert Downey jr.
Meryl Streep is an actress whose best characteristic is the flexibility of their characters , either good or bad
She has the tools
Meryl Streep is overrated and boring… people who enjoy her acting have never left the house 😷

Frances McDormand
James Stewart
Paul Newman
Geraldine Page
Denzel Washington
Jack Nicholson
Katharine Hepburn
Julianne Moore
Tom Hanks
Meryl Streep
Robert De Niro

Bette Davis
Leo?
Edward Norton is one of my favorites I truly believe he could be on this list. From primal fear to American history x he just wows in his performances.
Add "Fight Club" to the two you listed and those are the only 3 movies that he really stood out, though. Not enough to make the all time top 20 actors list...
The score, bird man, the illusionist, …
He isn’t. Bad joke
You most be young, are you?
The Australian actress, Toni Collette, (Muriel's Wedding, Hereditary, Sixth Sense) is one of the most underrated actors/actresses ever. She can go from a elegantly feminine character to a screaming, raving lunatic then to a halariously funny & lovable mom next door & every performance is 100% believable. John Malkovich is another brilliant actor who can play any character with integrity & soul.
Collette obviously isn't eligible for this.
Title
@@davidz3879 True, but she did live in Los Angeles for a time before returning to Australia in 2019. My intention was simply to point out how talented she was.
She’s not top 20 of all time but god, she was brilliant in Hereditary
@@shanewalt4249 I enjoyed that film until the ending, which I thought was a let down. But, Toni's portrayal of her character was brilliantly executed.
I add to the list: Audrey Hepburn, Dustin Hoffman, Duval, Tom Cruise and Jodie Foster.
Audrey isn't American though.
@@TheListenerCanon she wasn't born there but lived most of her life there if i'm not mistaken.
Can someone please explain how in the world is Leonardo DiCaprio in 20??? Y’all threw me off right off the bat.
this list loss all its credibility to me. It's like the oscars all over again.
Gimme a match. Gimme a gas tank!
BOOM! BOOM! THIS BUWOOLSHIT!
Good list, i would’ve like have seen Jack Lemmon make the cut, his performances in “Some like Hot” and “The Apartment” are all time great!
Great List Nice
Dustin Hoffman,
Clint Eastwood,
John Wayne,
Sam Elliott,
Willem Dafoe,
Joaquin Phoenix,
Johnny Depp,
Sean Penn,
Christopher Walken,
Jeff Bridges,
Kevin Spacey
and Robert Downey Jr.
It didn't escape me that many of the actors on this list were shown in scenes with Meryl Streep. She seems to not only have amazing talent but also can help others shine as well.
However, I don't know how anyone can really boil down a list of great American actors to a top 20. It's been over a century and there are so many wonderfully talented people. Too bad that AI and corporate greed are going to take that away from us.
How is Daniel Day-Lewis not in this list?? He's the most well known method actor of our time that has played some of the most iconic characters in literature
Edit* clearly, I didn't read the title, haha
He’s British… awesome actor
@@caz6190 I'm an idiot. I didn't read the title, haha. Thanks
Fully agree - DDL was formidable...... Can't keep him out......
Good list man
I never thought Id cry over a volleyball but Tom Hanks did that
Not even an honorable mention for Samuel L Jackson?
Hard agree. The man is a legend.
He’s awesome but plays roughly the same character in most movies so…
@@chikmnunget to be fair, I feel like we could say that about a few actors on this list. Some actors don’t have a lot of range, but they’re just too good at playing certain types of characters.
Nah, he's just playing himself in movies he doesn't pretend to be someone else.
Personally I could agree with most picks on this list although I would have liked to see some names like Clint Eastwood or John Cazale. Cazale had only had five feature films because he died too young, but every one of those films got a "Best movie" Oscar nomination, and Cazale left a deep impression every time.
Denzel Washington. I mean any role he’s in he’s killed it. I can’t think of one movie where I was disappointed or bored with his performance.
Sally Field should be on this list. And Jessica Lange.
@@violamateo I didn’t know who was that. I just checked, she died before I was born. Seems like a classic actress. I believe she’s good.
Jack Lemmon was my favorite. His pairings with Walter Matthau were nothing short of incredible. Some Like It Hot was a great movie.
13:32 Denzel Washington won his first Oscar in 1990 for Glory, Training Day was his second Oscar.
Meryl can do it all, act, sing, dance, speak practically every language known to man, and effect various different accents.

11:37 is NOT Mean Streets! That's Taxi Driver!
I really thought I would see Gene Hackman on here...he is amazing
Where is John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Harrison Ford? The fact that they’re not even honorable mentions is criminal.
For me RDJ is the GOAT of american actors, funny in Due Date & Tropic Thunder, my personal fav version of Sherlock Holmes, forever immortalised as the greatest comic book hero in IRON MAN, and now some Oscar buzz for recent role in Oppenheimer. RDJ🎬🐐👑
Don’t forget Chaplin.
Limiting it to just American actors doesn’t make it that clear. RDJ is great but there are plenty of American actors who are just as good or even better. Pacino, De Niro, Dafoe, Nicholson, DiCaprio, Brando, Duvall, Hoffman, Williams, etc just to name a few
Not even an honorable mention to Dustin Hoffman??
Leo should not be lower than some of these actors. Its not even about the number of oscars, but its very rare that we see Leo in a bad film and his presence is extremely heavy. Respect to the other actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman (great as he was should not be in the top 20 at all) but he should not be higher and i feel like his unfortunate death is what made people rank him higher than he should.
Great list Mojo. Very subjective topic. So many left out. All I’d add as a mention are Robert Duvall and Clint Eastwood.
Matt Damon and Robin Williams deserve to be at the top of this list, they are all truly incredible.
Oh yeah, specially Matt Damon watching him at the hilarious comedy the martian 😂😂😂😂😂
So... no Bette Davis... what the hell....
Johnny Depp? Brilliant actor even though he hasn't made many films I've liked.

- Anthony Hopkins
- Julia Roberts
- Gene Hackman
- Hugh Jackman
- Robert Downey Jr
- Tom Cruise

Collectively, here is my personal list.
In American Cinema*(There are British and Americans in the list).
20. Michael Caine
19. Glenn Close
18. Robert Redford
17. Deborah Kerr
16. Richard Burton
15. Meryl Streep
14. Paul Newman
13. Al Pacino
12. Jack Lemmon
11. Marlon Brando
10. Laurence Olivier
9. Greta Garbo
8. Charlie Chaplin
7. James Cagney
6. Audrey Hepburn
5. James Stewart
4. Humphrey Bogart
3. Katharine Hepburn
2. Cary Grant
1. Bette Davis
🎉
Robert Redford was in a Twilight Zone episode too!
You forgot Bette Davis
Honestly this is a list that needs to be Top 100 and have 5 Parts. There’s just that many amazing actors.
Jack black should have been on the list. His performances in kung-fu panda, the mario movie and both jumanji: welcome to the jungle and jumanji: the next level were just pure gold
There are so many people who deserved to be in the Top 20 than probably 14 or 15 of these people. They're all good but not Top 20 out of 100+ years of movies good. Where's Henry Fonda? Where's Lauren Bacall? Joan Crawford? Spencer Tracy? Dustin Hoffman? So many that deserved to be listed before a good chunk of these actors.
Johnny Depp should have at least gotten an honorable mention! The man played Willy Wonka *and* Captain Jack Sparrow. Try wrapping your head around that one!
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Ed Harris and Gary Oldman are great actor as well.
Faye Dunaway and Spencer Tracy should never be forgotten!!!!
I truly loved the late Tom Sizemore. He was for me the best character actor of all time. It was unfortunate that his demons got in the way of his career. The 90s was truly the greatest decade for him. A Matter of Degrees, Blue Steel, Point Break, Bad Love, Passenger 57, True Romance, Natural Born Killers, Wyatt Earp, Heat, Strange Days, Devil in a Blue Dress, The Relic, Saving Private Ryan, Witness to the Mob, Witness Protection (where he received a Golden Globe nomination) and Bringing out the Dead.
Other actors that were not on your list that I love: Henry Fonda, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Donald O' Connor, Michael Madsen, Robert Mitcham, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams, Clint Eastwood, James Dean, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, John Travolta. Aussie actors including: Naomi Watts, Toni Collette and Eric Bana. Michael Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Val Kilmer, English actress Kate Winslet, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford among others.
Robert de niro should be much higher in the list.

No mention of Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, or Robert Duvall?
Roy Scheider (French Connection Jaws, Marathon Man) is another mention. Doesn't get the recognition much.
Al Pacino is The Devil's advocate, I can't imagine another actor playing the Devil as well as Al Pacino did, especially "The Speech" part I can't believe he doesn't won an Oscar for that one
My persoal favorite is Johnny Depp. I feel like he can play nearly every character.
Just....not Wonka
@legitwhitebelt8353 I reservedly disagree. He couldn't play Willy Wonka the same way the late great Gene Wilder did, but that performance wouldn't have fit in a Tim Burton film. He gave us the Wonka Burton wanted us to see.
@@FatsquatchPNW As much as i've always enjoyed Tim Burton movies...he dropped the ball. Movie is godamn unwatchable. I've tried multiple times to get through it and just cant. This is coming from someone who watched the Gene Wilder movie religiously as a kid so im probably bias as hell haha.

Kudos for picking these 20. Not easy…
Top 20? Way too short. Top 100 Greatest American Actors of All Time since you should’ve mentioned other great American Actors/Actress: Judy Garland, Will Smith, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Grace Kelly, Octavia Spencer, Mel Gibson, etc.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is on this list.
Will Smith top 20?!
Dustin Hoffman?
Gregory Peck, Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Mathew McConnahey,

Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman, Mel Gibson, Willem Dafoe, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Sam Jackson, Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Edward Norton, Michael Shannon….
Wow…
De Niro and Pacino better be 1 & 2
I’m surprised you missed Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, and really doubting this list if you didn’t include Brad Pitt. Talk about versatile, he has played just about every type of role and played it extremely well.
Why isn't Johnny Depp on here?!? he should at least be an honorable mention. he's arguably the most versatile actor of the last two decades
How on earth could you not include Dustin Hoffman 😢😮
Daniel Day-Lewis has to be in top 3.
he's english. if the list is worldwide, daniel-day, olivier, hopkins, tilda, blanchett would bea shoe-in
He is not American so it should not be too much of a surprise that he isn't on a list of the top 20 American actors.
Might have been better to do a Part 1 and a Part 2. I agree with much of this, but maybe a do a top 50 or a top 100. There are so many great actors that entertain us.
Jessica Lange deserves a spot here... She has 2 Oscars (both lead and supporting) , 3 Emmys (both lead and acting) and a Tony too.. People always forget about her and it makes me really sad
I never do!
Leo and Denzel are my personal favorites
next video i recommend it to be 20 best british actors or asian
Pacino my personal favourite actor but trying to look at it objectively I can’t put him above Nicholson. Many actors are praised for changing their bodies and voice for roles, Jack’s singular ability is he stays mainly as himself yet has this ability to slip in any of roles, whether that be a straight up villain (Torrance, Joker), anti hero (McMurphy, Gittes), blend comedic and drama (Udall) etc. Jack’s genius is he doesn’t need to change in order to make the character believable, truly overlooked aspect of acting.
Pacino is better than Nicholson. I like Jack but Pacino is a masterpiece in every role he plays
Leo at 20💀💀💀😂😂

I have always thought Jessica Lange was an amazing actress and in the movie Rob Roy, when she said to Tim Roth "I will think of you dead until my husband makes you so, then I will think of you no more.", I found it chilling and sincere, and it is one of the very few lines spoken in a movie that has been locked into my memory.
