    "Gives you something to watch"
    Funny, I never realised but when I was a kid playing tapes I would stare at the spools turning. When I play a record I watch the stylus slowly track and move about, very relaxing that.
    But with CD I always had the disc obscured, hidden in the player. Same with minidisc. Now I see this, I may grab one if I see one, even though CD's spin so fast as to make it a blur. I may have fun trying to print CD labels with patterns on that may work, or perhaps under a strobe light!
    Cant do that with streaming ;)

      Update : my machine is not an EX1 !
      It's an EX100, very similar (identical mech).
      I got a replacement belt and discovered that to fit the new belt it was only necessary to remove another 3 screws and the amplifier module (just behind the door motor) just swings out of the way !
      Still have to feed the belt through the gears but it's much much easier.
      The biggest problem with the EX-100 is refiting the 'all in one' housing because of the 6 feet which protrude underneath the unit.
      After a lot of experimenting I found that locating the glass panel was the most important thing !
      Good luck everyone !

I have a question about the glass front sir. One of the sides has come undone from the silver post it sits on. What type of adhesive would you recommend to reattach it? Does that little belt control the laser housing piece and its movement? When you press the eject button it looks like the laser housing unit moves back so that the clear CD tray can move upwards so you can load a disk in. Is that motion controlled by the belt you replaced? I just found an EX-200 and the CD tray tried to move up but it looks like it’s blocked because the laser housing piece does not move backwards allowing the clear tray to move upwards.

    Quick question ... Where do get your replacement belts for stereos, VCRs, etc.? Do you have a local source or do you get them online? The reason I'm asking is I may have to get replacement belts for a ghetto-blaster and, to the best of my knowledge, the nearest place I might be able to get them is Toronto (about two hours west of where I live). Nice score, Dave. I wonder if writing on a CD causes malfunctions to the laser pickup? Maybe the opacity of the disc is also a factor along with dye coloring..........

    • @darinb.3273
      @darinb.3273 Před 2 lety

      Hello John, typically felt tip to pens won't affect the contents PROVIDED the chemicals used in the pen don't break down the acrylic coating just under the label. NEVER use a ball point pen to write on a CD, it is very likely the ball point pen wouldn't work anyway.
      I seem to remember felt tip pens that were especially made to write on CD-Rs that weren't supposed to mess with the acrylic coating not sure if it was just hype or not.
      I've used Sharpie on many CD-Rs and no issues at all.

    Is there any danger of seeing the laser before, during or after CD playback? Was thinking of getting one of these but always paranoid that I could damage my eyes if the laser was even slightly visible?
    I assume the laser doesn’t fire up until the disc is in the front loader and can’t penetrate the CD layers - so no risk whatsoever I guess?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 2 lety +2

      You do notice that opaque strip on the glass right. That's to stop laser from shining through the glass.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 Před 2 lety +1

      I wouldn't worry about the laser, especially when using the unit normally.
      One, when playing a CD, the beam is primarily reflected back into the optical pickup by the reflective substrate of the disc. Second, without the CD in the way, the beam is highly diffused from a very short distance past the objective lens. Third, the beam is very low power; only enough to read a CD. Fourth, as 12voltvids points out, the laser is blocked by an opaque label affixed to the glass over the traverse, which bears the words "VERTICAL DISC LOADING MECHANISM."

      One of the better units of its type , better display and two way speakers ,it may be worth a listen via bigger hi-fi speakers ,you might be surprised more as often the limiting sound factor is the speakers,the box and two speakers taking up the budget but of low quality also a swap to thicker speaker cable may improve the sound,a good looking unit in as new condition again.

    it could be falling victim to the capasitor pleuge. i know equipment from the mid 90s to the late 2000s were affected by the capasitor pleuge. even well knowen brands like Sony suffered from it. equipment would act eratic and have all kinds of wired issues from it. im not saying evrey issue is a capacitor but with things from the capasitor pleuge arra i would definitely check for leaky or high esr (dried out) caps
    also a side note. some cd players from the 90s an even erlie 2k didnt like playing cds with more then 16 tracks. ive come across afew of these. but the sony in the vid seems happy about doing so with a cd thats not all scuffed up

      No, Rick hart stole the music bed from musicbakery. All the music i use is royalty free from musicbakery.com. The composer is Jack waldenmaier. Rick hart is a session musician and played harmonica on some of the tracks. It did some vocals using the music bed from some of the tracks which is legal however he can not copyright it because the license is very specific. The royalty free license gives the user non exclusive rights to use the licensed content. You however can not sell the music in whole or in part. I can sell videos where i use it because I have a license to use it in my videos. Rick hart can sing along but he can not make copyright claims against anyone else that uses it because he doesn't own the music. Jack waldenmaier does. If i used his vocal track he could claim that but not the base tracks as nobody is granted non exclusive use rights. Understand?
