Germany was so much more stunning than we imagined! We are so grateful to our special friends Maja and Cheryl for hosting us Germany ❤ We loved exploring the Germany and seeing some of the many fairytale castles and going on an adventure up the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. 😁

12:17 it is heartbreaking to see the last remains of what once was a very large glacier. I remember what it looked like up there 30 -40 years ago and now the ice and the snow are almost gone.
We can only imagine what that used to look like 😥 it is already so stunning as it is!
@@SarahandMarek Around the 11:12 mark you could see what it look liked around 20 till 40 years ago. A completely closed Schneefeld.
The Bodensee (Lake Constance) was also a glacier....It's just the Earth's temperature cycle - which we only experience a small moment in our short lifetime.

@@SarahandMarek pls dont get in trouble for using a drone, there are strickt laws here in germany, i think you even require a licence. i know about another youtuber who got in trouble. so you better check the extact rules online, i am no expert in this either. same goes for filming inside stores and restaurants ( if you are not at an open publik place always ask, some germans take privacy really serious ) besides that i hope you keep enjoying your time here in germany ;)
I have to say, yet none of the travelvloggers I know made the effort to get to the highest point in Germany! Even I never have been there! Now I feel this emptiness in my memories where a visit of Germany's highest point was ment to be , needs to be filled.
It's also the First time I think a travellvlog about my own country wasn't basically useless. This video realy did way more to me than just catching my interest. I will indeed take action an get my family up on the mountains...It will be painfull as I'm a fat 42 year old. But better late than never.

On Lake Constance you have experienced something unique in the world: Germany, Austria and Switzerland have very different ideas about the course of the border in or around Lake Constance. And because they can't (or won't) agree on the course of the border, they have agreed that on most of Lake Constance you are in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at the same time. This way, one gets around the definition of a border and has created a situation that is unique in the world. Fun fact: Google maps shows borders in Lake Constance, but these are the imagination of the creators, because the software enforces that every bit of the earth's surface can be assigned to a single state or is stateless.

Impressive to see how little is left of the Zugspitzgletscher (Zugspitze Glacier). Almost nothing left in summer now..

I got married on Lake Konstanz and spent the night before at a hotel in Meersburg! We took our guests on a boat trip, so they could appreciate how near we were to Switzerland. I’m glad you had such beautiful weather for your exploration of gorgeous Germany !

Yes and probably illegal
There are always new towns and other places to discover in Germany! For example didn't know about Sigmaringen and that it was so beautiful, nor either about Zugspitze. It is almost a neighbour country to Sweden, yet we know so little about it.
Germany is SO big, we barely scratched the surface on our trip 😅 we would love to visit again and explore more!
@@SarahandMarek Thank you! Have mostly visited some of the biggest cities like Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt but there are so much towns and nature to explore. Guess we Swedes think it is so close so we can see it "another time". Heidelberg is the nicest city in Germany I have been to so far.
All American visters,went to Bayern or Köln! Why didn`t you come up to Schleswig-Holstein? Yes,we are from the North of Germany! We got Beach,Summer Sun,and really good Food. Find it out for youself.
Our visit to Germany and this road trip was only possible because our very good friends offered to host us and show us around They just happened to be based in the southern region of Germany. But we would love to visit Germany again someday and see more of the other regions around the country ☺ Thanks so much for this tip! Hopefully we can see the North of Germany as well someday 😄

Me as a German really appreciate you for doing such a beautiful video. I belief that there are still a lot of wrong opinions about germany and us as the inhabitants. Of course we have an absolut terrible history, but germany is way more beautiful than the world expects this country to be. Even the people here are way more open, with great humor and believe me or not. WERE KOT ALWAYS PUNCTUAL 😂
Simo, I was one of those that had the same negative opinion of Germany when growing up as a British Army brat. In 1982, I spent my first six months there with the realization that Germany is not only a beautiful place to see and live but also the people are very humorous, (a dry humor), analytical, and very loving. ok so "ich liebe dich" doesn't sound romantic but it's the thought that counts. After living there for 10 years, I have no regrets and enjoyed my stay there very much. Ich hab verklich mein herz in Heidelberg verloren. :)

@Sarah & Marek are you visiting more places in germany or are you just going through the south? Germany is very diverse within it's own culture and there are a lot more spots to see besides the stereotypical south (the bavarian culture is mostly associated with germany because it was occupied by the US after WWII and they just took everything they saw there and thought that's the whole of germany)

@@SarahandMarek Maybe some of the Islands in the north at the sea? There are like 50 of it. And Hamburg is definitely a cool city although it is totally different from what you see in the south. :) Or maybe try the wine regions in the lower west. Theer are some amazing wines and views
if it was this year then the weather certainly wasn't unusually warm. In fact this summer has been unusually mild in Germany!
All places I know very well . Sigmaringen is about 20 minutes from my hometown . Lake Constance is 25 minutes from here . Switzerland Bavaria and Austria is not far from my place . Also Black Forest is next to us .

Hi, i just came across the video and you channel and i loved it very much. I am not on a regular base at the Zugspitze, but just to years ago i took my family there and of course to Schloss Neuschwanstein. Unfortunately you missed out, in my opinion on the second way up or down to the Zugspitze and that is by train. I like to take it up and than go down with the cable car. If you ever have the chance to go there again, you should try it, i think it is worth it. Keep up the cool videos.

@@SarahandMarek I would love to give you a few suggestions!! I live near Göttingen, that’s 100 km south of Hannover and near the former German-German border. The Harz mountains are not that high, 1100 m is the highest mountain that used to separate East and West Germany. The so-called Weserbergland is also beautiful, and we also have lots and lots of castles. How can I write to you, are you on Facebook?

Zugspitze is not that hard to walk up on the back part but it took a group of men and a person with prior experience to show us the proper direction to negotiate it safely. We took 2 days to do it. The first day was a moderate walk going up hill for about 8 hours. We stayed in a hut called the "Angehuette" and spent the night where we had a hot meal that night from staff there. The second day was another 8 hours of a much steeper climb until we made it to the top and it was an absolutely rewarding experience! On the last part we crossed snow fields and we had to negotiate very carefully because people had died by sliding into pockets between rocks. Our biggest mistake was not using some sort of lip protectant because we suffered for weeks afterwards from our lips being burnt. Snow plus sun was a bad combination and we even did part of the climb with our shirts off. When climbing up the back part of the Zugspitze, we could not tell how high we had climbed but once getting to the top and looking over the other side to Garmisch-Partenkirchen we were so amazed by the view. 10 years ago there was a huge glacier there, now there is nothing. :(
It changes frrom time to time. Climate never stays the same. Only humans in their very short life think it must be the same every year. Crazy.
But the climate is not changing as fast as it is now. In my hometown we always had in winter closed snow cover for several weeks and also for weeks temperatures below freezing point. The last closed snow cover is now 5 years ago. The 10 hottest days since weather records were all in the last 10 years. Two years ago I even had "heat-free" at work because the temperature in the office has climbed above 35°C.

10:18 The guys in the left backround shaking their head because of your shoes. For this kind of dangoures mountain tours you need more then some ordinary sneakers. You need some hiker shoes which stabilize your ankles.
We definitely can agree with you there! We had no idea that we would be doing something like that so we were not wearing the correct clothing 😱 we were, however, very suprised that one could climb that section without the requirement for any safety equipment 🤔
Guys: it is not very hard to pronounce names properly, if you really give it a try. But if you do not want to try, then don't even try it.
It's like saying "I am sorry" when you are not
or
"I love you", when you don't.
Neuschwanstein translates to
new = neu
swan = Schwan
stone = Stein
This should not be too hard, even for native English speakers!

Also Anfang September war das Gipfelkreuz noch komplett mit Schnee bedeckt. Da konnte man nicht mal eben ohne Sicherheitsseil rüberklettern. Was allerdings auch ohne Schnee nicht besonders empfehlenswert ist. Die Schneegrenze war ungefähr da, wo die mit der zweiten Seilbahn runtergefahren sind.

Lake Constance (Bodensee), it is a fact that there is no fixed border in the lake, although three countries share the lake. If you go over to Switzerland you are leaving the European Union. But that is not a problem with a European identity card. You only have to be careful with taxes for things.
Neuschwanstein, what does a king do when instead of ruling he takes money from Prussia and builds beautiful, expensive buildings? Today one would talk about bribery and waste ...

@@SarahandMarek The Kaiser left Germany with many things. But his wealth was so great that he could not take everything with him when he moved to the small castle in the Netherlands.
So the German state got everything it left behind, including castles.
In the Netherlands the German Kaiser died and no one had asked him to come back as he thought. His things in the Netherlands became a museum there.

It is not that Neuschwanstein is a proper castle, it is a pointless palace or folly built by a king who wasn't completely right in his head.
At the time Bavaria was one of the poorest regions in Germany and the population suffered real hardship so he could waste money he didn't really have.
Beyond that nobody really knows how many castles there are in Germany. The educated guess is around 25000!

He loved to travel around in Bavaria, getting in contact with the people, quite uncommon then. The people loved him and said"unser kini" our king. Therefore, the conspiracy theory.
You missed Meersburg castle, one of the oldest, still occupied. You have to come back.
@@SarahandMarek The high amount of castles is due to the fact that for a long time, Germany wasn't a unified country but a agglomeration of many small principalities and kingdoms. And of course, every single one of these rulers wanted to protect their land - and the easiest way to do so was to build castles and watchtowers.

As a German I must say, it is disappointing that every time foreigners visit Germany, they go to Bavaria and the stereotypes of german sightseeings they have in mind and stay their time there. Germany is much more than Bavaria and every "Bundesland" has a lot of sightseeings which are great. Why not visiting the North? Or the East?
Yes, Bavaria is nice but for Example Hessen is also very nice and has very much to see (located in the middle of Germany). @all visitors from other countries, please give other places a chance to show you how amazing Germany is. Not always Bavaria, I beg you.

You are aware that they went to Sigmaringen and Bodensee, both not located in Bavaria? Baden Württemberg is not Bavaria, it's another federal state with different history, dialects and culture.

Radler means "Cyclist" by the way...a good brewed beer is by nature a very efficient electrolyte drink therefore after cycling for hours back in the days cyclists used to drink it mixed with lemon juice to avoid to get drunk or should I say not that much drunk...that´s where the Radler has its origin.
And about Neuschwanstein ...Ludwig lived a very precious life and didn´t care at all about state finances and any state affairs in general ..that is factual... and the building of Neuschwanstein was then the tip of the Iceberg so to say which brought Bavaria ultimately into state bancropsy, therefore the Prussians bought then all the Bavarian state debts and in return Bavaria lost its sovereignty and became part of the prussian German Empire...that is factual as well...maybe that´s the reason why Ludwig was found dead in the lake either because of suicide out of shame or someone else with either high bavarian national pride (because of the lost of the Bavarian kingdom to the for centuries declared "archenemy Prussia" without even a fight) or someone with high prussian national pride (to get rid of the King made the integration of Bavaria into the prussian German Empire way easier) helped a bit along..but nobody knows.

But when it comes to Ludwig, well... Now we definitely have a better understanding of the situation and can make better sense of the way that his choices shaped German history. That portrayal of Ludwig and Bavaria is just not correct.
First of all, he cared quite a lot about state affairs. It was just that in his mind Kings were appointed by God, and absolute rulers. He completely disagreed with any ideas of checks and balances, yet the "modern age" he ruled in meant that parliaments and parties grew more and more powerful. He never quite managed to reconcile that reality with his ideal vision of how a King and Kingdom should be.
Second, the finances he ruined were those of House Wittelsbach, effectively the King's personal cash. Bavaria wasn't bankrupted at any point of this story. Their big problem was being caught between Austria and Prussia trying to resolve the question of how a unified Germany should look - while Bavarian monarchists effectively had no interest in any unification either way. Nonetheless Bavaria made out golden when unification came; they lost little and gained significant privileges. That being said it was a further check on Ludwig's power - something he again found himself unable to accept.
Third, he struggled from a very young age with personal issues. When he was removed from the throne, that indeed was probably a conspiracy to finally get rid of him politically, under false allegations of having gone completely insane (he probably had some issues but perhaps not as bad as that). But his death nonetheless probably was suicide - he more likely than not was gay, and it was just one more thing he never quite reconciled with his view of what a King should be, especially in addition to his deeply religious views. With his vision of his Kingdom gone, at some point it just became too much for him.
Either way he's an interesting figure. He's mainly known for his castles of course, but he also was a huge supporter of Wagner, and he always had time for the newest technological gimmick, like this fancy photography and telegraphy stuff. Heck, some argue he effectively build the first power plant in history. So, yeah, lots of stuff going on with him.

Bismarck payed Ludwig´s debts which the bavarian state budget couldn´t affort to pay = "defacto state bancropsy" even when it wasn´t "official annouced" in order to force him to sign the "Kaiserbrief" of 30 Nov. 1870. That whole bribe amount was then 5,2 million Reichsmark which Bismarck payed to Ludwig.
My description in my previous comment simply wasn´t that "white washed" bavarian view/narrative about Ludwig which your comment definitively is.
It's disappointing that you visited only some touristic highlights in the south of Germany. I mean castles are probably the most boring places to visit in Germany and especially Neuschwanstein is not at all a place of historical importance. It's more like Disney land.

@@SarahandMarek I come from the north of Germany, so I can best recommend places in the northern parts. Cities or towns that are definitely worth visiting are Lüneburg, Lübeck, Schwerin, Wismar, Stralsund, Hamburg. As for the countryside: The "Wattenmeer" is something unique or a bicycle trip along the river Elbe. You might want to visit the "Wendland", which was during the cold war surrounded on the 3 sides by the GDR. A very rural and remote area with a special charme.

You announced the video staying "This is Germany" telling then that you were travelling round the different regions of Germany and what the viewer gets to see ist just a tiny slice of Germany, certainly very beautiful parts but sorry to tell you Germany has a North, a West and an East, even North-East and South-East are very different. How dare you to announce this being Germany as a whole?
