    Since the members of Mensa couldn't agree on what the group should be about, it just ended up officially being a social group where people with an IQ of 130 or more could hang out with each other. Of course, there are several cliques within it, and those can privately pursue whatever common goal they have.

    You should address the nature of ideological possession. How people identify with certain groups and adopt worldviews for emotional reasons, whether a political or scientific paradigm, instead of doing their own research into contentious issues, studying opposing viewpoints, and coming to their own conclusions.
    Most people treat politics like a spectator sport instead of a lifelong research project. They join team "liberal" or "conservative", team "left" or team "right", team blue or team red, and then they let talking heads on television tell them what they should think, and how they should FEEL about important issues. Then they can't engage in independent thinking because if they ever challenge any of the tenets of their quasi-religious political ideology, they risk an identity crisis and social ostracization. Thus, their brains protect them through cognitive biases like confirmation bias, groupthink, and the Semmelweis Reflex.

    • @ExistenceFirst
      @ExistenceFirst  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely! Our inclination toward tribes is so engrained from evolution. I think one of the more innocuous versions is people identifying with their favorite sports team, but, as you point out, there are also political/religious/ideological tribes, which arguably do more damage to society than professional sports. I'm not sure what the solution is, though. Any ideas?
