    Why this generation is the worst: Microtransactions in AAA games

    • @Sellipsis
      @Sellipsis Před 7 lety +4

      Microtransactions have found their spot in the AAA now with proper implementation. Halo 5, Overwatch, Gears 4, and Titanfall 2 are all adopting a model that has or will forsake the idea of additionally charged map packs costing 10-15 more dollars each and instead allowing player the option to buy items of mostly cosmetic value with real cash. The amount of money Halo 5 has raked in via the REQ system has allowed 343 to justify releasing new maps and updates past their planned schedule and the game is far better for it. Overwatch's new characters and maps are all free updates for everyone, Gears 4 is adopting an interesting model about rotating new maps in and out of playlists for everyone to play but will still leave open the option to buy them outright (if I recall).
      I haven't spent a dime on the REQ system outside of my LE edition of Halo 5, yet I still get to enjoy all the content, rather than hesitating on throwing down another 15 bucks every 3 months for a few more maps hoping that other people in the community are doing the same.
      As long as developers stick to models like that, I say let every multiplayer adopt a similar system if it means never paying for a map pack again.

      Campaign had great gameplay but poor story. Which is the exact inverse of Halo 2. Oddly enough. Multiplayer is fantastic and you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it now with all the content available on it.
      Perhaps we'll finally get the best of both worlds from 343 with Halo 6

    I'm pretty much done with gaming consoles. I'm selling my ps4. They used to be fun. But now gaming companies focus so much on upselling, preorders, subscriptions, and dlc. Multiplayer experience has gotten terrible. I remember when it used to be adults and older teens playing great games until 4 in the morning. You could have great conversations, a lot of fun, and meet cool new people all over the world. Now it's all filled with whining annoying kids, gangster wannabes, and thugs smoking weed, talking trash, and screaming childish nonsense. The online gaming experience has gone to hell which has reduced me to single player open world games. I hate shooters now. Every single year there's a new battlefield, warfare game and they both are filled with the same crap single player campaigns and focus on the ruined mp experience which sucks now. Companies keep getting swallowed up by the super companies. EA and Ubisoft are goliaths now and treat their game creators and programers like shit. They're over worked pressing against unrealistic deadlines giving us rushed games loaded with bugs, and terrible stories. The entire industry is sinking. So, I think gaming is getting worse and this generation is the worst ever.

    This Generation has been a complete joke with the few games aside of course.
    Countless remakes and remasters.
    Countless games with absolutely no single player campaign. Wasted franchises like rainbow six. Wasted potential like the division. Half ass releases like No Man sky assassins creed and watchdogs. Games to take one to two hours just to fucking download on top of the patch. Games that are 1 to 2 hours long at full price like fucking street fighter. Games where dumbass costumes and color changes and even access to content that should be included costs money. Lack of new franchises oversaturation of old franchises.

    • @Ozzianman
      @Ozzianman Před 7 lety +4

      +RFmooonie PC gaming is the platform who is contributing the least to the problems gaming is facing today. We are atleast yelling on the top of our lungs and "rioting" when companies are trying to fuck with us. One excellent example is paid mods for Skyrim. After 2 - 3 days (very approximate) of complaining, it was removed and that was a fucking good thing.
      The console gamers is much more passive, i have not seen them complaining about sony fucking them up their arse with Online requiring PS Plus and the recent increase in price of PS Plus (for no good reason), and the games you get for free YOU DON'T GET TO KEEP IF YOU DON'T CONTINUE TO PAY FOR PS PLUS! Atleast on the Xbox One you get to keep the game you got for free if you stop paying for Xbox Live.
      Honestly, i think forcing those who want to play online to pay for their service is a shitty practice. You are already paying for the internet for fucks sake and they are not hosting servers for 3rd party games by the way. Only for their own games. Still, a shitty practice in my opinion.
      I respected Sony before, back in the PS3 days, PS2 days even. I don't have any respect for them until they improve.
      The reason i game on PC is better controls and the much more open market. Because of the open marked and crowd funding, we are getting awesome games in the future. Games like Star Citizen (If it succeeds) and Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
      I love the indie scene, they actually try to try new things and be more experimental.

Whole yes the new/dlc operators take quite a time to unlock or spend $20 to get them along with other things, the game itself, at least in my opinion isn't designed that way.

Its what I play when I'm bored of other games, so I dont want to try hard get all operators legit, and I will not pay for them. I complain about dlc because its pay to win, basically why try getting 25k renown when you can pay! Its no challenge to pay, and I would try to get them legit if it wasnt so much renown.

  • @wealth4rmwisdom

    The fact that developers can make changes to games after their release is what really hurt gaming imo. Developers used to have to make sure games where as tight and flushed out as humanly possible before release because once it was out, it was out. Now they're lazy, now big companies just push games out finished or not and simply build as they go. But this practice is not the only culprit, DLC and the need for greed has also damaged gaming in this generation. But, maybe this is a good thing. Maybe all this gives a chance to new indy companies to set new standards, new bars and become new leaders in gaming.......... Maybe.

    • @SuperKratosgamer
      @SuperKratosgamer Před 7 lety +8

    • @wealth4rmwisdom
      @wealth4rmwisdom Před 7 lety +9

      Yes, very true. I feel like some individuals, companies big and small are exploiting gaming like it's a "Get Rich Quick" scheme. It genuinely feels like all the people who SHOULD be making games are ONLY playing them and all the people who SHOULDN'T be making games are making them. IMO, the games during this "next gen" era of gaming lack the TLC you could feel from many predecessors. There's just no love put in some of them anymore and sadly that (some) includes many of my personal favorites.

GRAW, Modern Warfare, World at war, Far cry 2, Fable 2, Killzone 2, Fallout 3, Burnout Paradise, Bad Company, Soul Calibur 4, Socom Confrontation, GTA4, Hells highway, halo 3, and MoH Airbourne are all continuations of older generation console/PC IPs, all of them had a existing trademarked series title prior to the 7th generation. A PS2 could never handle even a downgraded version of COD4, but a PS3 can handle a downgraded version of COD:AW. You don`t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. And the you can`t say there are less new franchises when more than half of your examples are sequels. The reason for that is that the tecnological leap between a PS2 and a PS3 is far bigger than going from a PS3 to a PS4, so developers back then were begining to figure out they could do a lot more with their games. Noawadays the main diffenrence bettween a PS3 game a a PS4 one are graphics and size

Your videos are honestly spot on, it's so refreshing to hear somebody say it how it is about the state of the gaming industry. This gen has been abysmal in terms of creativity, and picking up a new title and just being blown away. I want to play a game that gives me the same feeling Bioshock did when I swam to the lighthouse and rode the elevator and got my first taste of Rapture. I'm so tired of going into my local game shop and seeing the PS4/XBOX ONE sections dominated by remasters. This generation of consoles are now probably halfway through their lifetimes now, and it has nothing to show for itself. Anyway, keep up the videos, you're doing great work.

    I've been gaming since the NES and IMO the problem with this generation is that it did not offer significant novelty over the previous generation. I don't think the blame for this can be attributed solely to game companies, but the problem is that tech-wise we are hitting a sort of cieling. When we moved from NES to SNES and Genesis the leap in graphics was incredible, the amount of depth in each and every genre was equally improved. From SNES to N64 and PS we moved into a whole new dimension of gaming with 3d graphics.... Every single game that came out felt like a new experience. When we moved into Ps2 and Xbox territory we saw 3d graphics taking a massive leap forward... similar to what had happend with 2d graphics in the generations prior. Then with 360 and PS3 we got the blowing up of online gaming and high definition graphics that took advantage of new television technology... I'll never forget the first day I plugged my 360 to my flat screen and saw HD graphics for the first time playing BioShock... my jaw almost literally hit the floor. The tech was SOOO good that it gave us the longest generation of all time, lasting over a decade. Now developers are not sure where to take games. Improving graphics significantly over what we saw previous generation is just too expensive, and really requires PC hardware (over 1,500 USD worth) to pull off. So instead what we get is the same graphic designs and models used in prevoius generations but with upgraded textures and resolutions. After a few hours playing the luster and shine wears off and we are left feeling like we are playing on our PS3 or 360 again. The inflating costs of development that it takes to try to impress on the graphics department make it so that game developers are way more reticent to give new IP's a chance. This leads to the boon of remastered games and new sequels that feel like clones of generations past.

    the wii; begins the casual standard for nintendo, and because it sold well nintendo kept at it, most likely destroying the company and turning it in to a joke.
    The ds; because it was easy to code for and once again was casual, it invited terrible game devs to make cheap games, like seriously, its awful and most likely inspired most clickers and other mindless time wasters more then likely
    The xbox 360; not a bad console, but it started the whole pay to play online thing. it didn't start online gaming btw. pc games and i think the dream-cast also had it too.

    And it's only getting worse, publishers' focus on micro-transactions and over-priced DLC is pushing them to put out bigger games; not better but bigger. We're losing hand-crafted experiences in favour of a platform for making long-term money. This in turn is resulting in games becoming driven by numbers, skill-based gameplay is a thing of the past. In order to increase longevity devs are ramming half-assed rpg systems and endless loot grinds into every game.

  • @DantesAwakening
    @DantesAwakening Před 7 lety +26

    I think you forgot a couple of majors problems.
    The first one is that this is happening for so long. PS1 had more great titles then PS2. PS2 had more great titles then PS3 and so on.
    Second issue is that the game industry has become like the movie industry in capital budget required, producers don't want to risk their money on the uncertainty so they tend to endorse blockbuster movies like games (Avengers is a mediocre franchise let's be real but it's established and brings money... so keep doing that.)
    And the third point and the most important one is that games have increased so much in details and complexity that you can't simply shit a game a month anymore. It takes time and the better the more expensive it is. Take a look for example a game from the PS3 era.Blu Ray around 8gb or something. Nowadays the same game franchise has gone to more then 40gb of data. Doom for example are 63gb. BF4 are 45+.
    With so much more detail and so much more money in game when developing a title. The risk/reward ratio does not favor the quantity.
    And that's where the indie industry has come in place. To fill this gap that has been created in the middle of the big titles.

Something different is going on with the mindset of game developers as well as the experiences I'm having with their games. It's not as awe-filled and utterly amazing as almost every second of my past experiences have been. I don't feel as satisfied with the direction our AAA games are going.. They seem to be falling away from the quality standpoint of game creation and just want to keep selling more $60 pieces of plastic, without putting $60 worth of content on there. I mean, we've got destiny, no mans sky, and a few other games that seem to show this the most.

      Siege is a fun game dont get me wrong, ive bought it for a reason and enjoy playing it. But its not the " Tactical" i was looking for. I see more people play it like CoD , than something that they would worry about dying on, or being cautious. As far as the Tactical type shooter i was looking for, i was hoping for its core gameplay with destroyable walls and everything, but more push towards like Swat 4, Breach/ flash/ everyone yell, DROP YOUR WEAPONS!! Put your HANDS UP!!! spray people with pepper spray paintballs and tazers. And better core character customization, instead of these sort of flaky " Characters". Like Siege core mechanics, with R6 Vegas cover / movement. With a Swat 4 twist and usage of non lethals. The Swat 4 multiplayer* i think it was Swat4* where CT's had to escort a VIP to the roof of the hotal, and obviously the T's were trying to stop him, with use of non lethals, Cable ties, and tazer trolling was AWESOME

    blame early access, DLC and micro transactions for helping big game developers realize that they dont have finish games to release them, and can still charge you top dollar. They can slowly piece it out and charge you for content later down the road that should have been included in the original price. By the time they decide to release a new title you have spent upwards of 100-150$ for a single game but it wont matter because everyone eventually moves to the next "Big Title: 2" and the process starts all over again. Nowadays its more about the money and less about the games. So why bother with new franchises when the current blueprint is already suckering millions of players into blindly spending their money.

They are incapable of thinking of different ideas for games. More than the above, they are scared of taking a chance with new ideas.This generation's consoles AND games (aside from the WiiU, which flamed out but not for want of trying) has been nothing short of STALE. I like that Sony has been diversifying its game library lately, but Nintendo has been an oasis in a desert of stale game content.

Battlefield is the only good quality game that's out. IMO. BF doesn't release their game yearly. With the exception of BF:H. Which doesn't count because that game sucks too. Still waiting for that real nice deal of a new game. Can't really think of any that are going to be promising. Mafia 3....maybe...watch dogs 2...gonna flop....the full hit man game...perhaps... there's no game that's coming out that will be a heavy hitter. Thank god they decided to release the Bioshock collection. I almost wish I bought an Xbox. At least they have backwards compatibly.

First of all witcher 3 undoubtably, dark souls 3, MGSV even though the first 3 titles were better MGSV is still a really good game, Battlefield 1, Overwatch(is considered the best class shooter atm.), Total War Warhammer, which imo is the best game from the Attila series(and I have played all), many would argue skyrim belongs to this generation as well, undertale(really beautiful story and replayable) life is strange etc. Don't be one of those spoiled little kids with the "nostalgia". This generation is really solid as far as gaming goes(improved technology duh).
      Ofc there's been some failures like no man's sky ac, watch dogs, cod etc but there's been a lot success as well.

    Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3. A trilogy that can represent a timeline of gradual changes a game can have to cater to a more broad population/generation while sacrificing its original art and design for more profit.
    Imagine if they made a Dark Souls 5 10 years from now - Half a game at launch delivered piece by piece with bugs and glitches because of rush delivery, dlc weapon exclusives, pre-order weapon skins and class, and then filled with washed down difficulty to keep the average player to use his wallet more on the new weapon rng packs that you spend "soul credits" on. Once a game grows successful it will fall underneath this business model to compete. It is inevitable.

      brun zero I love the series and I love each game. They deserve so much praise in multiple aspects of the game. I'm right there with you. When I say gradual changes I mean subtle ones: pre order bonuses, more linear path, softening of invasions to make the story easier, one hit kill methods easy and frequent making PvP gameplay boring and more predictable for even the average player. In my mind it comes down to simple gaming psychology - make every player feel really good at the game. To accomplish that you have to dumb it down.
      I'm a huge fan of the series like you, I just fear for the future if these changes continue. As a result many representives of the community and popular streamers have left the game. We'll all return for DLC we paid for but for how long? It's all speculation and part satire of a game that will probably never exist lol, but one to be concerned about.

So many publishers are holding back on performance requirements to satisfy a larger market of people with older hardware. they are all the same thing and just rely on graphics to sell it. and is it just me or does anyone else miss the days were games look like games? now ALL of them try to have these super realistic graphics and are basically simulators. there is barley any actual art in games now or interesting looking designs. yeah sure there are still some out there but they are all the same type of games again like JRPG and 2d games.

    this is why for the last few generations I'm always a gen behind. I got my PS3 around Christmas of 2013. I pay a fraction of the cost for finished games that are new to me. I still like PC gaming better anyway, but that's neither here nor there.
    At 43 I feel like I'm an ancient master on the mountain with the long white beard in gaming terms. Ok maybe just ancient minus the master part. Anyway, I've been playing since Space Invaders in '79 and got my first home system, an Atari 2600, for Xmas in '81. I've had at least one console in every gen since. Also I got my first pc in '86 and have pretty much always had a PC for games ever since as well. The point is that I've played a few games over the years sure, but more importantly I've seen the history of the industry unfold in real time and for a long time I closely followed developing trends. I wish the young gamers of today would realize that they have the power to dictate what happens. You vote with your wallet and if we could just all get on the same page we really could demand better products instead of just complaining endlessly on Internet forums and comments. But I also used to wish that gamers would realize how much better PC can be as a platform, or how much more fluid, fast, and intuitive keyboard and mouse is as an interface, especially for FPS. As my father used to say: If you wish in one hand and shit in the other, which one fills up first? Oh and as far as whether this generation is the worst. I'll let you know when I get around to it, but it wouldn't suprised me at all if it is even worse that our original poster here thinks. We live in a world where people literally CAMP OUT ON THE SIDEWALK for the latest and greatest crap. So why should the companies feel the least bit pressured to produce good products? It's a sellers market right now. Maybe we need another crash like the early '80s. Here's to the next E.T.

Man, leaving them out despite the acclaim they got creates biased opinion for this video, as you're not presenting all the facts that counter your view, not to mention the infancy of this generation while the other was fully developed over around 7 years, this generation has had less than 3 years to be critical of it. I do think the direction we've headed with HD "remasters", preorders and DLC is really killing the appeal of gaming nowadays though. Lastly, Beyond: Two Souls was a game from last generation. The sheer number of gigantic flops/ disappointments this gen is also absolutely overwhelming, easily way more let-downs than hits. During the first 3 years of last gen the big let-downs were, what,
    Haze
    Assassin's Creed 1
    Need for Speed Pro Street
    Killzone 2 kinda? although not really by today's standards
    Tekken 6 kinda
    that's all I remember, and nothing really that scandalous.
    The let-downs this gen? Fuck me!
    Destiny!
    Watch Dogs!
    Evolved!
    Sim City!
    Assassin's Creed Unity!
    No Man's Sky!
    The Division!
    The Order 1886!
    Star Wars Battlefront!
    Mirror's Edge 2!
    Mafia 3!
    I'm sure I forgot plenty. Let's also not forget the far from mind-blowing, "serviceable" sequels Battlefield 4, Fallout 4, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Infamous: Second Son, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided etc.
    Games that could be considered milestones? Uncharted 4, Witcher 3, Bloodborne.
    Well last gen I didn't play Dark Souls or Witcher cause they weren't my thing and there were just too many other games I was drowning in. Uncharted is great. So that makes one. Awesome.
    Let me remind you all that at this point during last gen we had gotten GTA 4, Crysis 1, Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2, Gears of War, Dead Space, Call of Duty 4, Batman Arkham Asylum 1, and fucking Minecraft 1.0 .... Compare these world-changing releases to today's milestones. *If you dare.*

    this generation relies on either remasters or genres that proved to be the most successful last generation. microsoft still relies on edgy shooters that teenagers will think they're hardcore for playing, and sony is relying way too much on interactive movies that have almost no replay value because the last of us is apparently the best thing they've ever had on one of their consoles. this is pretty much why i bought a wii u then a switch, cause i missed games like kart racers and platformers

    Those games back then were made out of passion and love. Now, developers simply continue them to milk us out of our money it's always about money now. Battlefront on the PS2 was awesome in its time, now the new Battlefront took out half of the characters that were in the old one and milked us with DLC content. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were amazing games, still play them till this day and the DLC were actually just as fun as the base game. Fallout 4 on the other hand, graphics didn't improve much, not enough side quests and half of the DLC was garbage and we were ripped off $50 dollars for the season pass. Call Of Duty 4 and MW2 were made with passion. Now it's the same thing every year and worse. Same multiplayer gameplay, added thrust jumping abilities which was the worst fucking idea ever and supply drops...not even going into that.

    It takes more money, time, and human resources to develop modern AAA titles and software prices have barely increased in the last 10 years. Do the math, if it takes more money to make a game, and you can't sell the basic copy for more than $60, then the end result is less new games and more sequels to proven franchises. It's not like game developers suddenly became worse, it's all economics.

  • @gageadair8754
    @gageadair8754 Před 6 lety +1

    The reason why this generation of gaming is not as fresh is because large companies have to divert their attention to little kids who want shooty, shooty,shooty, and an open world. If you look back at games like metal gear solid, battlefield bad company and even fallout you find that earlier games had a better sense of what people actually wanted. The devs of companies like Ubisoft in this generation are lowering quality of games and increasing price because they know none of it makes a difference to some 10 year old. Because these casual gamers make up a larger percent of the gaming community that means large franchises have to focus towards them.

    I'd say the early iterations where better of rainbow six, but the bit Ive played of them from the early PS1 titles to now, they were completely different games. Siege was built as a competitive FPS game with variation unseen till now, its in the same series just like how Lost planet 1 and 2 are in the same series with 3, but unlike that, the game branched out into something new completely and did a damn good job of it, its probably the most innovative FPS this year, if not in a long time. Where as with lost planet 3, it was dumbed down from its core, and completely removed from what lost planet was, but in the laziest fashion possible.

    Economics, timing and the shift in technology are a number of the factors for the drought we've seen in gaming.
    From the economic side of things keep in mind that 59.99 has remained the standard cost for a new AAA title for about a decade. According to the US government's inflation calculator it would take roughly 72 dollars to be equal to 60 dollars back in 2006. We're always the first to rant about the nickle and dime sales tactics of DLC, but in the grand scheme of things they're just trying to compensate for the fact that the dollar is losing value. While it's true that the barrier to creating games has been lowered (which has provided us with the indie game market) the cost of developing AAA games like COD has also skyrocketed.
    The tech and timing is also a part of the equation.
    When the PS4 and XB1 were released they were already somewhat outdated hardware, basically only matching what 2 or 3 year old off the shelf PC components were capable of delivering - nowhere near the requirements needed to push the VR based titles being dreamed up in response to the emergence of consumer grade virtual reality. This has relegated the current generation to being little more than a stop gap hold over. An overdue upgrade, but only something to toss easy remasters and rehashes at.

    Dude, a lot of the games you claim to have become franchises started on the PS2 and PC before even 360 and PS3 which makes those points and gaming list kind of moot. Call of duty started on PC then came to Xbox, GTA was franchise started on PS1 and then evolved on the PS2 when it became beloved by many because of GTA 3 respectively. This gen has had great franchises. Look at Dying Light & The Division. I dont think the title fits the video and the opinion expressed. Being upset or indifferent about not getting better quality games vs upgraded hardware I get, but that doesnt make this gen the worst. The worst generation of Gaming would actually be back in 1983 (Atari) when the gaming market almost crashed itself. Since the NES era its been on a rise. What you expressed is more "Whats wrong with the triple A publishers" not this being the worst generation of gaming lol. Great job on the video regardless man, great quality!

    Due to the controllers, our games will do less.
    Due to the outdated hardware, our games will look less appealing.
    Due to the companies that own these consoles, our games will have more bullshit micro-transactions and after release paid content in them.

PS3 came out it had some great games, but it wasn't about the traditional gamer anymore. Now when games come out, it lacks the passion and ingenuity that older games had. There's no variety, no creativity, no competition against other developers. The most buck for the least bang is what is wrong with the gaming industry today. (Generation)
    1) Why are there so few exclusive games for this current generation?
    I think its because there was a huge graphical and performance difference between the last two generations like the ps2 and ps3 that made it logical for games to only come out on the new generation (ps3 or xbox360). With this current generation (ps4 and xbox one) however the difference is not that huge, it looks only a little bit better so most of the games can come out to both current and last gen and still be enjoyable.
    Also I think many gamers kept their old consoles for much longer this time because they didnt see a tempting enough reason to buy the consoles so early. The games were very similar and the graphics were only a little better. There was not a huge jump between generations this time. (for instance with the ps2 graphics as the common standard a "new" generation game like God of War3 on the ps3 seemed photorealistic and totally different)
    2) The list seems a little confusing to me, maybe I just misunderstood something. I thought the purpose of the list is to count the new IPs on each generation. But the list contains games like COD4, GTA4, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and other sequels also, which are clearly not a new IP like Mass Effect. I understand the game itself (COD4 for instance) wasn't available on the generation before, but the franchise itself existed, so it's not really a new IP. There could be an argument that the game itself changed so much to be considered a new IP (like with Fallout 3), but in most of the cases it remained the same general game (for instance Call of Duty was always a wartime FPS).
