Jonathan Wilson discusses Gusztab Sebes' Hungary, in 1953, and their early use of a back four. This neutralised the traditional winger, and football changed forever.

The unbelievable reality is that we're nearing 2017 and yet English football is still pretty much in love with the pacey yet bereft of technique winger, and the lumpy center forward. Power and Pace are still the two most admired attributes in the British game, no matter how many times it gets found out easily.
Roz Sa and that's exactly why English clubs fail constantly in Europe. Once Sir Alex left, English clubs also died in Europe.
Maybe the national team but not the clubs
this is pretty much a myth lol
That tactic won 9 european cups for England. Liverpool - 77,78,81,84, United 68 and 99, Notingham 79 and 80 and Aston Villa 82.
And even more other international club cups.
So this kind of tactics have places.
Yes, and that place is 3 decades ago
I am in love with this channel ! It hurts to see your suscribe number so low while shit football channels have millions ! you are the only ones that truly explain the game ! Keep it up
Thank you very much!
Probably because this is too 'educational' for them, they need loud obnoxious shouting.
Shouting = views. It's a tried and tested technique.
lol sadly yeh. Dont we don't need those type of kids here, you will get your 1million subs!
@Ddhfacetyy only 4 years late to that one, not too bad
I really don't know how this channel hasn't got more followers... You really deserve it for these very informative videos. I share most your videos on Twitter. Hopefully your subscription count will someday match the quality of content that you're putting out!
Appreciate the support!
to be honest, I just found this channel today.
after I browse through videos about "secret of football"... :/
really a wonder why videos from this channel never made it into my "recommended videos" even thou I've been watching football videos the past 6 months.
They've only been producing videos of this quality since summer 2016. If you look at their vids prior to that, you will understand why they didn't have subs lol. I agree, they deserve more.
L Silver you good
I have good news for you!
The detail of using Hungarian Rhapsody as the background music...perfect
Excellent. I'm addicted to this channel
I'm addicted to seeing nice comments like these
We all are
@@Tifo i also
I love that you put Liszt just before you startet talking about Hungary.
Awesome! Please more of these. "Tactics Explained" is top-class !! Thank you for yr work!
It saddens me to think that we Germans stole the World Cup from the Hungarians after they beat us 8-3 in the group stages. The Hungarian team is possibly the best team to ever play the beautiful game
Thank you! The starting XI of that team is still national curriculum in Hungary (we hadn't had a good team since).
Apple Juice
You didn't stole it my friend. You were simply better on that day. There were several bad ref. decisions...but life is like that...
The germans put out a weakened team for the 8-3 game. They were banking on beating turkey in the next game. Which they did, easily.
German had fresher players while Hungary were much more tired and Puskas was carrying an injury.
If you Germans weren't so damn good, then Puskas, Cruyff and Messi would all have World Cups!
I honestly agree (half Hungarian)
the explanations give me delight, the bg music gives me goosebumps..thats the XFactor of this channel..Quality is permanent, trending is temporary.
Great video and channel. I hope that this channel will grow fast.
could you do a `Tactics explained`about the sweeping goalkeeper style
I had to sub these vids are brilliant I hope one can be done by comparing the style of play of the 3 big leagues
I love this channel, I just wish the videos were longer I can't get me enough
Damn dude. You just got another subscriber. Way to go.
just a suggestion, maybe try and explain the 3 4 3 formation and why it has been successful over the years ? or the use of tiki taka during the pep era. great video bro!
Another amazing video, I can't believed I've only just discovered it today, nor how you haven't got more subscribers! Such injustice. Also, nice use of "Hungarian Rhapsody" as the background music ;)
Dude, this channel is dope. Instead of going through the usual gimmick of ranting loudly and trying hard to stand out, I see that you are actually educational and really know your stuff. You deserve a million subscribers, if not more!
You eventually got your wish.
This is one of the best channels about any sort of sports. Really important to understand the nature and historical evolution of the game. Especially in these modern days where ignorence seems like a trait of the population.
Initially , I thought the title suggest how in modern football , full backs evolve into wing backs making traditional winger redundant.
I agree. Data suggests that crossing is far less effective in producing goals than building an attack through the middle. You only need the threat of crossing to deny the defense the ability to congest the centre. For that, you should sacrifice a technically inferior player, a defender, rather than a forward.
Especially in the last couple of decades, nutrition and fitness improved so much that every team can very easily find two players who can run up and down the field for 90 minutes.
The book inverting the triangle by Jonathan Wilson goes deep into early football tactics like the 2-3-5 for anyone who wants a more detailed explanation of the games development.
Really enjoy your videos lad well played
Interested to know if you're a fan of the Whiteboard Football stuff or enjoy all our samplings?
uMAXit Football I like it all about the whiteboard stuff is great imo
Jonathan is right of course, but there is another reason why the winger became extinct.
With the advacement of nutrition, psychical regiments, etc. the field became much smaller than before. Full backs are no longer restricted to their own half, because they can actually run for 90 minutes, so there's no reason to have wingers, too, when full backs can do that job besides their own.
And because they can support attacks, it's much easier to give them the task of the winger, ie. streching the play, than have them come inside and be a playmaker, too. After all, their mindset - how they're thinking about the game - is still primarily defensive. It's much more logical for the wingers to come inside; after all, they're forwards because they love to have the ball at their feet, either dribbling, passing or shooting.
Excellent music choice, matched perfectly with the narration.
(Now football is also intellectual, like i dreamed)
Is there a trequartista video ? Cause after Kaka that position changed imo
Really digging the classical background music..
Keep it up guys, and believe me you'll soon receive the recognition you deserve.
Legend
we need more tactical explaining vids like these
nice channel really informative..
Appreciate it mate!
the most intelligent football channel ever! love this channel so much
Woo!
uMAXit Football i hope this channel becomes proverbial soon!
Good video.
Honestly, I have known Hungary as on of the great team during 20th century
And knowing now how tactical their approach was against the opponents then, it's sad how come they never won major tournament even though they made to finals and semis numerous times....
please do a video about the Dutch side of 1974, world cup
why
Allan Anderson
yes..pushkas was just brilliant
2323 is what pep adopted when using inverted fullback
I wish I could see another version of Beckham play
That would be
THIS IS MY FAVORITE CHANNEL!!
YES BRIAN! - Danny
keep it going please.. fantastic
if i may suggest a few topics that need insight is the following:
1. football academies vs buying talent
.2. fernando redondo
3. the Ajax youth system of 994 and why it was so special
4. the bosman rule
5. the elimination of the sweeper system
Hmmm, should maybe think about updating the graphics on some of these older ones.
I think Leroy Sané is a pretty good winger on the left wing
I don't think wingers are dead. Inverse wingers haven't been fully exploited yet, I feel.
tricked me into thinking there'd be a mention of jon mccarrthy
more pls
What's the tom and jerry music playing in the background
@@jwc2654 An orchestral version. I heard it straight away, and I was very surprised that no one had noticed.
song?
And people criticised Alf Ramsey for having no wingers when he was just reacting to events.
beautiful
Watching this video high asf was not a good idea.
same
So how did Gigs dominate during his era?
Poorly explained from a biased English view where somehow the rest of us are to believe that 1 FA Cup final was so important when in fact it really wasn't regardless of how many Brits watched it. The truth is that wingers got the most fame after the 50's ended, Hamrin and Garrincha had no problems continuing after the 50's as right wingers and other players emerged e.g. left wingers like Gento and his successor that never came to be Dzajic were taking on players with ease. The most problematic thing about this video is that it clearly shows a back 3 of Hungary but it's presented as if it was a back 4 when in reality the dot that represents Zakarias is a defensive midfielder that helped the defense so practically you can't make a video title with "how the back 4 killed the winger" while you're using something that is close to or almost a 4-2-4.
Just wow
😊
This analysis is too complicated for my simple mind to understand. But I give the video a like though.
i read "how back four killed the traditional WENGER " :D
ROFL
Some of the players in his back four almost killed the traditional Wenger.
Do a video about real Madrid under zidane
Tactics Explained | Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid, please! #umaxitgiveaway1
Today most of the wingers are actually inverted wingers.
To be honest, the drawing was unclear for me
Joe! What happened to your voice? Did you catch a cold?
i made the like 999
#UMAXITGIVEAWAY1
nope, can't play winger anymore. let me try playing middle in the park eh?
Football coming full circle. Now everyone is using the WM again.
Brahms!
I really forgot which one was it?
