    I remember reading on koni's website many years ago that if the shock was a load bearing member in the suspension then it was technically a strut. This definition was not describing the whole suspension such as a mcpherson strut suspension vs double wishbone. It was just referring to the "shock". If you remove the unit from a miata, the car will fall down, which means its a strut.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 4 měsíci

      I'll have to correct you on this one because Miatas run shocks. I did look up the Koni FAQ that you were referencing and found this, "....if you remove a shock the spindle or axle will still be completely attached to the vehicle.....It is often assumed that any damper with a spring is a strut, this is not the case."

      Just bought a 2004 stock Mazda nbfl, and drove 400 miles on the motorway, and 80 miles on twisty road, under pouring rain. I loved it...

    What I knew anyway has just been explained and compared in a way anybody should understand. Nice video.. on another note I’m ordering you FM Stage One Suspension in a couple months along with new end links and finally say good bye to the 4x4 look on my 08. New tires and 8” wide rims w 225’s ordering too. Looks like your rack sample NC has em right there.. can’t wait for spring.

    Fantastic. Thank you very much. Interested in the next video about strut braces then as they came with front braces from factory, well my NB3 has anyway.

    That gen Honda is getting pretty unicorn and this one is super clean. The "new" Renault Megane RS models (gen 3 - 4) use some pretty trick strut-based setups which they call revo knuckle from memory. Honda's new Type r's are doing pretty well too with those 2 battling it out year after year for Nurburgring fwd records. Porsche did end up finally going to double wishbone fronts on recent GT3 models. Pretty good of Mazda to stick to double wishbone for so long when Honda gave up mid-late '00s with the cl7-cl9 accords.

    • @antonyingram
      @antonyingram Před 4 měsíci +1

      I may be mistaken but I think the first Megane RS (the gen with the R26.R) also had struts that separated cornering forces from steering ones. I believe "Revo knuckle" was Ford's marketing term for it though, as they used it on the Focus RS.
      Honda's system is basically the same too, and another that used it was Toyota back in the 90s - the "Super Strut Suspension" on the Celica GT-Four and a few others was basically the same idea. Very clever stuff and stuff like the Civic and Megane show it really works (though French brands have shown that simple torsion bar and trailing arm rear ends work well too!)

    Any benefit at all to using a top mount with pillowball mount then? I noticed none of the Flyn Miata coilovers use pillowball mounts, not even the Fox coilover. But other competitors do market pillowball mounts. Are those just unnecessary bling?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Since there's not a lot of side to side movement in a shock suspension, most folks won't really benefit from a spherical bearing (what we use in our NA Rear Shock mounts) or a pillowball, compared to using something with a bit of deflection, like rubber. For the majority of people that like to take their car on the street, the small amount of flex that you get from the OE rubber bushings is worth the trade offs in NVH the a solid spherical bearing might give you.
      That, and, keeping the factory NB top shock mount set up as we do in all of our coilover kits reduces cost a non-insignificant amount, compared to designing and manufacturing custom mounts with pillowballs and/or spherical bearings. The stock stuff works well.
      I won't say pillowballs or spherical bearings are unnecessary bling, as they do have their place, but I'd recommend something with some rubber in it to soak up some NVH if your car spends most of its time on the street.

    Definition of a strut: “a rod or bar forming part of a framework and designed to resist compression.” Because the Miata uses a coil over dampener (shock) design, the combined package can still be called a strut because the spring resists compression. What it is not is a MacPherson strut, which is a specific type of strut suspension.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you for your feedback! While going by the Webster definition of the word may indicate that this assembly be called a "strut", this video is saying that Miatas do not have MacPherson strut suspension.

    • @mynameisoversteertorqueove5004
      @mynameisoversteertorqueove5004 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree with that. The term “Strut” is often used interchangeably with “MacPherson Strut.” But those people who are new to automotive engineering terms may not yet know that. I’m putting this clarification out there to, hopefully, help with any confusion.

      That's our exclusive rear brake upgrade. It is available and includes an e-brake, although it's not as strong as stock.

  • @ISR403

    So miatas dont need/require struts bars right?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 4 měsíci +4

      They can benefit from them in the front, but it's a different set of forces than a strut car so the design ends up a little different.

    • @tailsneon556

      A triangulated bar han help with NVH and cowl shake. A tower to tower bar has minimal effect and none on suspension geometry change under load.

    • @erykszymanski9167
      @erykszymanski9167 Před 4 měsíci +1

      My take-away from some of FM's other videos is that the strut bars are beneficial to chassis rigidity (in the front, useless in the rear as explained in this video and others).
