In this episode of #PaintLikeAPro show you how I use wet on dry to create smoke with acrylics. The same painting techniques for blending colors like this could be used with oil paint as well. I show you how to use a dry brush along side to blend out the colors and smooth the paint.
If you have any questions about something I covered or maybe something I didn't cover I am more than happy to answer.
Materials I used:
- Golden Fluid Acrylics (titanium white, carbon black, napthol red and primary yellow)
- Liquitex soft body acrylics (cerulean blue)
- Water for mixing with paint
- Round blender and scrumbling brushes from artist loft and princeton. #2 round brush (any brand works fine)

Once again GREAT job Chuck! Like the idea of water on the finger and just a drop on palette. I struggle with the balance of not enough and/or too much water. Thanks for your help.

Thank you as always!
I enjoyed your video :) Keep it up!
Do you do fog, the same way Chuck? It seems it would be a lot of work to put a large amount of fog in a picture :)
I just started painting with oils, a couple months ago. So far I have done 5 paintings. I have done a lot of different creative work as well over the years, but just recently picked up the painting. I started watching Bob Ross many years ago, and again recently on You Tube, night after night, after night, learning his techniques. Then Then I found Bill Alexander, whom I didn't know was Bob's mentor, and watched him for a while. Then I found Wilson Bickford, whom I now have on FB, and watched a couple others on You Tube as well. Now I have found you, and have been watching you. I just Love your work so much. I love all the little detail in your paintings. Last night I watched the one with the Bear and cubs. That is SO awesome! I would give anything to be able to paint animals like that!. I have watched you every night now for about 2 weeks. I like combining different techniques to create my paintings, and of course use my own thoughts as well. Is there somewhere I could show you what I have done? I would love to have your input, and would also love to see you do more on here as well. :)
I do fog the same way yes. It is a lot of work especially if you want it to be very soft and smooth. But I enjoy the process of all my paintings so it doesn't bother me :)
That's awesome! I'm very honored you are watching me after watching so many awesome painters like them! Thank you very much I appreciate it all! I'm a big Bob Ross fan as well.
Thanks for the interesting technique for the smoke, but how did you paint the aurora borealis?
Looking good, I like where your going with it. And it does look better now with the trees thinned out a bit and the trees highlighted by the campfire. Is the bright spot a lantern? I guess I'll see when its done.
It is the lantern! Good guess!! Thanks David
w0nderfull painting i learn how to paint smoke thank you very mutch
You are welcome, Amal! Thanks!
Thanks. You had the same idea.
Thank u
Awesome work. If you don't have a blending brush, can you use a q-tip?
I think you could, worth a try anyways
@@chuckblackart Cool. Ive been trying to paint with acrylics on Bristol board of late (ran out of paper). It hasnt gone very well, lol.
What about using zinc white?
You're cool.
Hm. Doesn’t seem too hard to do. Update: I was doing pink smoke for a picture & it came out really good. Thank you.
Is there a specific technique when using oils?
I should cover that sometime soon. It depends on the artist. I like to use alkyd medium and mix with oils. Then apply just like this almost. Limiting myself to 1 - 3 layers. So it should be almost complete with acrylics before you add oils
is it possible to paint a smoke in Oil?
is it possible to paint a smoke in Oil??
