I dealt with division 6...So nice & friendly. I did a free personality test, watched a video & did a seminar before leaving & not going back. I didn't even know I was going to one of the churches. I was asked in the street if I wanted to do a free test & before I knew it, I was in the church. It was a nice building but I felt all eyes on me & felt the kindness was not always genuine. They gave me food & drinks while I was there. Kept trying to sell me things which was a real turn off

They would send letters, but I recently moved so I dont get them very often.....these people are so good at what they do that those even slightly vulnerable could fall into their trap. I met them during a time of struggle & they almost got me, but my mind is so strong & faught against that trap

Here's a radical idea! People with no work and nothing to do could volunteer at a soup kitchen, pick up trash, visit shut ins at a nursing home, or provide some community service. I know that is NEVER going to happen because it is not adding to their profits or enrollment numbers. Sad. So many people available to do something good, but the church opposes actual community service work.

If David Miscavige said that the new “public relations program” was for all scientologists to work at soup kitchens 10 hours a week, Scientologists would do it.
You know, for each action you take on staff and say spend 2 hours say... making a sec-check on someone. You will then spend at leats 1 hour to update the files, excel tracters and other "ongoing documentation". Then you spend 1 more hour preparing a report about that sec-check.
So for each "productive" hour, you have at LEAST one "unproductive" administrative hour.
As Aaron said, orgs have a lot of responsibilities, but often very few staff. So everyone is overworked beause they are understaffed. So you never have people with "no work" except maybe underaged members.
Ohhhh yeah, all they care about is $$$$.
I was in scientology for some years. The sea org used to horrify me.... the way they lived, or rather *didn't* live! It was a constant guilt trip to sign on with them, but there was no way in hell. The "org board" was absurd. Huge numbers of administrative positions that generated no revenue, and just a small amount of technical people producing the product. It was so obviously flawed. And yet thrust at you like "this is *the* perfect model for *any* enterprise."

Thanks a lot for explaining that! An organisation with around 35,000 members cannot, simply cannot, require a staff of in excess of 8000 people including Sea Org members. That is a staff that ordinarily would serve miillions of customers, depending on the sector. So what you're saying is that they basically make work for one another, with a few people actually dealing with "customers" in the real sense. All the rest are chasing their tails trying to keep up with the many ridiculous policies and the scrapes into which the organisation gets itself. And in the process they are gradually bankrupting their loyal customers till they have none left. Fine prospect.

Well, when I was on the class 8 course after going into the Sea Org, I would go get a cup of coffee at the local Denny's after muster, then come back, late for class, study all day and then go watch TV in the evening in my Sea Org apartment which I had fixed up myself from its former disgusting condition. I basically told all my "seniors" to fuck off. I was a rebel who wanted an actual life, and of course did not last long in the regimented Sea Org.

Think about the concept of 'arbitrary'. Getting someone to do something arbitrary is the goal, the content is actually irrelevant. In fact, if you want to establish a program of control than the MORE arbitrary, seemingly purposeless, or illogical an activity is ...the BETTER. Think about the very beginning, things like the seemingly harmless TRs, from the point of view of a human conditioner: the content of the Training Routines is actually unimportant; its getting people used to carrying out arbitrary commands that is the point.

I have this fantasy in which a lot of members, while being driving to recruit somebody or doing any other activity unsupervised, suddenly receive a hit of consciousness -like if a lost tenis ball or something hits them- and they see what they're doing at the moment and think "WTF?". Then they go away and never turn back.

The more I hear about the inner workings of Scientology, the more it reminds me of how the Air Force operates.
Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, who once taught at Harvard Medical School, wrote a paper titled Cult Formation in the early 1980s. He delineated three primary characteristics, which are the most common features shared by destructive cults.
1. A charismatic leader, who increasingly becomes an object of worship as the general principles that may have originally sustained the group lose power. That is a living leader, who has no meaningful accountability and becomes the single most defining element of the group and its source of power and authority.
2. A process [of indoctrination or education is in use that can be seen as] coercive persuasion or thought reform [commonly called "brainwashing"].
The culmination of this process can be seen by members of the group often doing things that are not in their own best interest, but consistently in the best interest of the group and its leader.
Lifton's seminal book Thought Reform and Psychology of Totalism explains this process in considerable detail.
3. Economic, sexual, and other exploitation of group members by the leader and the ruling coterie.
The destructiveness of groups called cults varies by degree, from labour violations, child abuse, medical neglect to, in some extreme and isolated situations, calls for violence or mass suicide.
Some groups that were once seen as "cults" have historically evolved to become generally regarded as religions. Power devolved from a single leader to a broader church government and such groups ceased to be seen as simply personality-driven and defined by a single individual. For example the Seventh-day Adventists, once led by Ellen White, or the Mormons church founded by Joseph Smith.
Some groups may not fit the definition of a cult, but may pose potential risks for participants. Here are 10 warning signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader.
• Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
• No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
• No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement.
• Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
• There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
• Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
• There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader.
• Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
• The group/leader is always right.
• The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.

I worked at a Scientology Mission for a few years. I started at reception, then I was put on writing letters to everyone in their files. Offering them services. I remember once a lady came in with a friend and asked me about the Xenu story. At the time I didn’t know anything about it. This was when pc’s were not common. A few people had them, but most regular folks didn’t. A year or so later I did get an early pc. The anti Scientology stuff was already there. It didn’t take long for me to see the ridiculousness of it!

My neighbor is a low level TCOS member, 30+ yrs.,), he’s near losing his house now, 5 hrs ago they had him refi his paid off house, to give them the proceeds, for all those programs/courses. He’s 75 and all his assets, time & retirement money, they take by terrible tactics. He still works 7 days and about 60 hours a week for them, (manual labor), is exhausted, broke and now bad health. He left, for 1 year, they ruined his life and sucked him back in by stalking him 24/7, ruining his little, (retired), handy man biz, alienating his friends too. It’s a CULT, needs to be dismantled by the US GOV., it’s not a church, helps so no one, (except D. Miscarriage), IT HARMS PEOPLE, period. We’ve tried to get him to leave over and over again, but he’s brainwashed, more like in brain fear of them. He is in the NOVA area group, his wife n kids are not in it and he’s not been allowed to see them, 25;+ yrs., a tragic & sad situation.

I had Scientologists attempt to recruit me in Santa Barbara in 1974. I was interviewed for what seemed an eternity. I remember they wanted to have a meeting at my house (I was a renter). Eventually I escaped from them.

Unless there was a conference, then you got to stay home & watch it on TV...the head of the ward was your bishop, we had a great one for awhile, course the next one was a piece of work, I think I was threatened with excommunication at least once a month, sometimes more...is girls used to have a little game we played, see who had to wear a maxi dress on Sunday cause they got the back of their legs beat for something/or nothing during the week.
Now some things might have changed, I haven’t been to a church since I turned 18, and that was some time ago.. of course that doesn’t stop the missionaries from knocking on my door (I think they know I’m not gonna yell at those poor little boys), or my mailbox from being filled with propaganda, they don’t call cause, as my husband likes to say, I got a mouth like a sailer...so don’t you tell me I’m lying bitch, I grew up in that cesspool of a cult, and I have earned my rage and hate!

Been watching a lot of ExMo videos, and I'm so glad you made it out. That is one crazy cult! So, so crazy. I was saddened when I recently watched a video of a young man who left "The Other" cult (Kingston brothers), and after leaving he tried some different churches and chose Mormonism. From the kettle into the fire!!! Heartbreaking.
I'm sorry if you were emotionally or physically abused. I never experienced any of that. I've found the church to be a major blessing in my life and helps me get closer to my Savior.

The reason for this is pretty clear-- in a cult it's important that people not think for themselves, and in order to insure that, people have to have things to do all the time-- they are not allowed to sit around and possibly do some independent thinking. That it's a bureaucratic, inefficient bunch of BS of do-nothing operations, more the better-- inefficiency is a plus. Busy, busy, busy, doing anything but sitting around and thinking.

so what happens if you decided to just not do anything? What can the Sea Org do legally? I find it hard to believe that the Sea Org could actually enforce anyone to do a job.
The SO doesn't have to worry about "legally", they only have to worry about internal policy. If an SO member just does nothing they will be removed from post and assigned to the "Category B Estates Project Force", which is basically just having to re-do Sea Org boot camp, with some extra steps. If the person refuses to do this, or fails to successfully complete the Cat B EPF they will simply be offloaded from the Sea Org, which just means, kicked out and sent home. They will be given a bill for any courses or auditing they did in the Sea Org. The bill has to be paid before they will be allowed to do any further Scientology auditing or courses. They will also be given a list of auditing and training they have to complete before being allowed to ever re-join the Sea Org. And that's pretty much it.
All that work and their numbers are dwindling...it's comical

You're also encouraged to look up pretty much every single word that comes up in the dictionary. Also you have to study tons of lengthy texts, which even if they are filled with nonsense the skill of studying itself is fairly transferable.

I get a real kick out of all the dumb Scientology acronyms and lingo. When my buddy at work and I both watched COING CLEAR, we started calling people who were being difficult at work an "SP" or a "PTS".

On the best seller list for so long? It is a hard book to read.
Honest question: Does the 'Church' of Scientology predominantly try to recruit the wealth and does your level of wealth determine how high you can rise within the organization?
Generally speaking I would say the answer to both of those questions is yes but not quite as intentionally as one might think.
Also what it means to rise high in the organization means different things to different people
It’s not like you’re literally not allowed to advance either on the bridge or within the organization without money it’s just that it’s harder to do so
This structure is very 60's - for sure its the old school company structure - making us shuffle between offices to get the mortgage or the product - it's also a way of keeping people busy preventing critical thought.

1st priority remove their tax exempt status. If they had to pay property tax and tax on all the "donations" the organization would self destruct. Secondly it's a pyramid scheme with no pay off which is illegal. Lastly you can't pay someone $50 a week it's actually illegal and if they lose their tax exempt status I don't believe they would be able to do that....
Good Lord! The bureaucracy! I can’t imagine trying to call them and get to the right person. It would be as bad as calling the cable company or Social Security.

I would love to see a video that describes what a non-scientologist person will experience the moment they walk into the door to the time they depart. I understand they have to take a personality test, and the objective is to get the person on course? So, if they walk in, take the test, then go on course, what is that process like. What if they don't go on course or buy anything? What is the experience like? And what if they have not gone on course or bought anything and return? What's that experience like?

Keep scientology working is keeping wheels/people spinning in chaos combined with lack of sleep and proper nutrition. What a nightmare of a no win situation. I hope more people become aware of just how horrible they’re being treated. Trafficked, malnourished and sleep deprivation. Very sad. I was born catholic, but didn't really practice it. then when I was 17 I just didn't want to have a religion. I can tell you that when I was in church, with other catholics, attending catechism, NEVER once did we try to recruit, threaten, or ask for money from others. we also didn't disown family members if they didn't want to practice the religion. I'm sure same goes for all the other main well known religions.
Aaron, you should have seen Mpls, MN in1960's. Thank goodness we didn't have computers and cell phones. They didn't get me with the want ad for a job. Not when they wanted me to buy something. Not many credit cards back then.

Catholic priests and nuns DO make a yearly income. It is called a "stipend" but basically it is income. It depends on what diocese they work for, and what parish they are at, how long they have been doing it....just like any other job. It isn't true they take a vow of poverty. Sometimes, they make a pretty decent income if they do work outside of the church! Such as in prisons, school, or hospitals, they can make a good yearly income. There was a time they didn't make money at all, but that was a very long time ago. So, Scientology needs to stop using Catholic clergy as a comparison to how they pay their Sea Org.

I was going to say, if they're spending 100 hours a week "working" they're getting close to nothing done. Hanging around at your place of work and actually being productive are two different things. There is an optimum window for human productivity and it falls well short of 100 hours per week.

@Klaa2 Check out Marcus Vaughn's channel. He was a Bethelite for several years before he realized it was all bullshit and got out. He makes videos where he talks about what it was like living at the JW headquarters in New York.

The inefficiency in organizational design isn't an accident or error. Its almost certainly intentional.
The constant stress to preform and the focus on performance statics sucks up the time and mental effort that would otherwise be spent wondering why in the hell you are doing these things at all.
Think of those elaborate North Korean parades and civic demonstrations they are constantly rehearsing. Its all just make work projects to waste the time you'd otherwise spend on being human.

I just got my catalog of L.R. Hubbard books, novels, etc. Since I began receiving them over 10 years ago, I've never once bought a book. I'm not now, nor have I ever been, a Scientologist.

Celebs aren’t allowed to join the sea org usually since they are more valuable as public celebs
