  • Today, I flew from Charlottesville, VA to Washington DC on a United E145. It was short alright, but in some ways, I actually liked these seats better than the mainline fleet.

I love those smaller jets. I had a 9 hour flight on an A340 with decent economy class seats, then I got on an E190 and there was so much more space. They say the pitch is the same but it just didn't feel like it.

That’s how I felt too! United’s mainline economy seats are very different from their Embraer Jets. I’d say the Embraer Jets have a similar feel to some JetBlue flights, which in general has more padding than their competitors. Thanks for stopping by!

@@CaptainZacYT even within UA mainline, seats have different feel. I flew on several of their 737NGs and once on an A320. I've found their 737NG seats to be pretty confortable. Their A320, however, is atrocious. That said, they will start off their NEXT retrofits with A319/A320, so we'll find out if they put in new seats or if they put in IFEs into the existing seats (similar to what Continental did when they decided to install DTV). Until we see what UA does with NEXT, UA has proven that the Airbus isn't always more comfy than the Boeing.

I am planning on moving near Charlottesville, but sometimes have to work in DC. This seems like a good option as well as the Amtrak train.

I love my hometown airport, even if it's nothing out of the ordinary it's so much more convenient than an hour+ drive to bigger airports. The views are always so stunning especially on arrival to runway 3 over UVa

I flew N12175 to CHO on October 7th. I didn't fly this flight but I recognize the captain.
All the seats (and plastics and lighting) on the United Express 145s have been refurbished. The seats are the original 90s design with better cushioning, rather than the new slimline type. The company considered, but decided against installing slimline seats as the main benefit is reducing the seat pitch to cram in more rows, but we can't put more than 50 seats on these anyway so it would have been pointless.

The single seat is fantastic, having both the aisle and window in one seat, on the other side you actually have just a tad more room in the aisle seat than the window, but I prefer the view. You can get both on the left side.

I've been on this flight. The turbulence was insane. There wasn't enough time to get to cruising altitude so it remained in turbulent air. Was scary honestly.

Interesting. Our flight was actually very smooth and didn’t have any bumps at all. Guess you must have caught a windy day. Thanks for watching!

Most RJs will always be more comfortable than mainline

I took that flight often when I was going to UVA. CHO-IAD-CHS. United was usually cheaper than Delta thru ATL or American thru CLT. I remember it usually being longer than 17 minutes though.

IAD frequently lands on the North-South runways (19s), so that could make the flight a bit longer. Today we landed from the south on runway 1, allowing us to skip the loop around north. Thanks for watching!

I've a feeling that now that the Metro connects Dulles to the District, this flight will be much more popular for DC day trips and business meetings that normally would've been a drive instead.

Eh. I’m not sure solely because of the price. I just look for the cheapest flight possible, and the lowest it goes for is $138 roundtrip. I think the average person wouldn’t pay that for what would be a 2 hour drive. Plus with the airport “formalities” like security and check in, it may actually be longer.

I love this video, just one creative critique. Av Geeks like takeoffs so rushing through the takeoffs is a mild turnoff. Besides that I really like your content and you have my sub.

You were lucky that IAD was landing to the north. Had they been operating on the 19's, the flight would have easily been 10+ minutes longer

    • @CaptainZacYT
      @CaptainZacYT  Před rokem

Definitely. Would have even been shorter if CHO was using runway 3. The left turn over downtown Charlottesville did give a great view, though. Thanks for watching!
