    This time, let’s travel back in time, though only 15 years, to when I used to fly the Embraer 145 aircraft. In this video I will be sharing the history of this bird, some minor specs, and what was it like to fly the famous ERJ 145. Love it or hate it, it played a key role in the development of commercial aviation from the late 90s to early 2000s. Today, the scale of operation of 50 seat aircraft has been drastically reduced. Much of the flying that it used to do, is now done by 75 seat aircraft, albeit at lower frequency between airports. I hope you enjoy the video!

    Yes… Continental Express (which became ExpressJet) was the initial US operator (launch customer) of the EMB-145. The key difference between the Embraer jet and the Bombardier jet is the fact that the CRJ was derived from a corporate jet platform. The EMB-145 was derived from a proven Part-135 (scheduled airline service) platform. Some CRJ guys will cry foul… But, it’s true. I was privy to the comparative analysis done by Continental Express. And, it was no contest. Embraer built the first true 50 seat commercial airliner. Bombardier caught up with their follow on variants…

      Great input! Thank you. Certainly true and self evident in the capabilities of the aircraft, particularly in its first iteration, it was far superior. In the XRJ variant, the 145 was a true 50 seat airliner!

    Embraer did not create the 50 seat RJ market. The ERJ-145 was five years behind the 50 seat CRJ-100/200 series in terms of global entry in to service, and almost fours years behind in entry in to service in the United States, with Comair launching service with the CRJ-100 in 1993, and Continental Express (later called ExpressJet) launching ERJ service in 1997.

    ExpressJet was so much fun. I remember the modified speed profiles. If IRC, the 135/145 was 290.M65/MSC/DSC.IDL and the XR had something like 270.M60/M76/M76.290. The 135 was a nightmare for FA. The layout was a headache. Yes, the weight restrictions on the 145EP often had like numerous seats “held” for and during hot weather, oye 🙄 When Xjet used the XR on the Branded flights, it was super fun.

    • @CaptainRod
      @CaptainRod  Před 3 lety +1

      There are many advantages to both actually!
      The screens look clean, and so give a sense of “simplicity”, however, imbued in its clean aesthetic is extreme complexity. With LCDs or CRTs, there are multiple pages, sub-menus, and tremendous amount of information in a small area. All that information takes brain horsepower to dissect and monitor.
      Meanwhile, steam gauges are extremely simple! You get the information right on its “face”. With time, you’ll know the information that the gauge is providing with your peripheral vision. In a steam gauge the needle will provide you with the respective value, once you have memorized the scale of the gauge, and know where it is supposed to be for that specific portion of the flight, you will have tremendous SA of the aircraft systems simply sitting in your seat while looking outside! It is an awesome feeling!
      I hope that helps!

    Hi Rod. I would love to get your take on the future of regionals. Particularly post COVID. The consensus that I see is that the E145 and similar 50 seat regionals are going to fall by the wayside. Any thoughts on that? And what would that mean to those carriers who operate all 145s? Love your content!

    • @CaptainRod
      @CaptainRod  Před 2 lety +2

      Good afternoon! Indeed, the amount of Embraer 145 aircraft in the skies has been decreasing since late 2000s. That is due to the overall tendency of the industry, transitioning from higher frequency flights to every single airport, to fewer flights with larger aircraft still connecting satellite airports. Even within major carriers, there is a tendency to purchase aircraft that are mostly +180 seats. Those that have 100-120 seating capacity are there to replace the regional aircraft. This brings me to a very important point; we should all be in favor of extremely small regional carriers. This increases the overall value of a pilot’s career while also improving travel experience! It is a win-win. The carriers that are currently operating the 145 will have to start flying 175 or risk going away for good. Nothing new there since that has been the industry trend for over +10 years.
