    Thanks for posting a solution to this very real problem. When companies get large enough they lose touch with their customers completely and just compete with each other. Most trimmers available today will autofeed their line and leave bits of debris all over the lawn. The old bump feed systems did not do this but are hard to find these days. It is too bad the inferior systems are displacing products that worked better, Even worse is that it seems all of these companies have totally lost touch with reality. Thanks again for posting the truth.

    The grey plastic spring loaded sliding button has little metal weights that cause the button to move to the pressed position when spinning. You need to pull those weights outs. To do so, first pop out grey sliding button with a small flat head screw driver.
    Once you pop it out, and view the underside, you will notice it has metal weights embedded into the end, towards the side with the spring. Carefully drill little holes into the grey plastic to take out the little metal weights.
    Double check the balance of the button so that it will not move into the pressed position, and thus preventing auto-feeding. Re-assemble and enjoy.

      Bought the brushless 18V unit 2 days ago, I've used it once, and I couldn't believe what was happening. Then I read up on the auto-feed function. What an incredibly bad design. Removing the weights worked on the tool, I tested it out just fine. Be careful that you don't lose the spring when you take out the slide button. The trade-off of manually pulling out string vs. autofeeding every pull is an easy choice. Thank you mrbonzzai!

    I don't have the auto feed feature button and my trimmer worked fine since 2018. Today I reloaded the plastic line and installed the spool; but the line just comes off the spool as I use the tool and wrapped itself inside the motor. For the life of me, I could not figure how to fix the problem and I was thinking I was going to have to buy a new Ryobi (good brand) trimmer. I always noticed those 4 little notches on the spool and wondered why they were there. Thank you, I now what to do with them.

    I tried something else that seems to be working so far. Instead of locking the line into one of the notches, when I have to let go of the trigger, I push a small amount back into the spool (very small amount, prob. 1/4-1/2 inch). So far, when I pull the trigger again, the line doesn't advance. This has been working better for me, because when I NEED the line to feed out when it breaks at the end (often when edging), I can still have it feed out more line. I was tempted to return the unit, because this is indeed a poor design. The Black & Decker I had previously only feed the line as it got shorter. But other than that, I like this string trimmer.

    That grove you put the line in to stop the auto feed is designed to hold the line in place when you install the spool so the line does not unwind as you insert it. When you pull the trigger it should release and work as normal. For some reason yours is staying in the grove. So unless other people have a broken unit like yours this will not work. So this is a devil with a halo for you. You have a broken unit that would not work as designed but for you this is how you prefer.

  • @lanajacknichols8397
    @lanajacknichols8397 Před měsícem

    But that means you have to stop and take trimmer, head off and manually feed out 6 inches of string every time you use what you have let out correct mine has the bump Feed, so I don’t have that problem anyway, but that seems to be as big of an issue and as annoying as it feeding itself out I don’t have time to stop in upside down and manually pull string out every time we do a lot of weeding sidewalks, and buildings I would spend more time feeding out the string manually then weed eating

      My method disables everything, correct. I have been using this trimmer on my backyard for few weeks and didn't have to manually extent the string. I may have to manually extend it once in a while but not likely more often then after few hours of work. Another way would work if you don't use the protective shield. Then even if your string is going to be too long it wont be cut, but you may have to pull it back in. I did try that method and this was taking me too much time, so my locking method works better for me.
