SOFIA COPPOLA DIRECTING STYLE
Watching the films of Sofia Coppola, one often finds themselves in a certain mood, from the composed and dreamy visuals to the soundtracks that put us into a trance. A consistent story motif in her work deals with isolation - what happens to characters who find themselves isolated or face the possibility of isolation. In this video, we will dissect the Sofia Coppola directing style into elements like cinematography, editing, and sound design to unlock how Coppola constructs this concept and mood.
The most obvious way Sofia Coppola movies present isolation is on a plot level. In The Virgin Suicides, the Lisbon sisters are isolated on house arrest while the group of love-struck neighborhood boys dream of them from afar. Charlotte and Bob are two lost souls who find common ground in the maze of Tokyo. Some characters are trapped in a location, some are trapped in their indecisions, and some are dealing with both quandaries simultaneously.
With production design, Sofia Coppola continues this theme of isolation. For example, in The Beguiled, a group of women are stranded in a schoolhouse during the Civil War. The costumes and set dressing provide subtle clues without clunky exposition. Their dresses are faded, and obvious alterations have been made since they are unable to leave to buy new clothes. Vines grow up the walls of the house while the yard is choked with overgrowth.
Coppola also uses color to separate characters from the worlds around them. In The Bling Ring, the domestic homelife of the teenage thieves is drowned in muted beige palettes while their criminal nightlife bursts with vibrant hues. With cinematography, Coppola will often shoot at a distance from her characters, with abundant negative space in the frame to visually isolate them.
In films like Somewhere, the editing is minimal, allowing scenes to play out in real-time to help put the audience into the same “going nowhere” headspace of the characters. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, we can see how the subjective montage edits in The Virgin Suicides capture the romantic memories of the Lisbon girls.
Finally, the sound and music elements that Coppola is mostly known for. In some cases, the sound design is extra quiet. So much so that we can hear the pull of a cigarette or water dripping into a bathtub. Coppola’s music choices range from daydream melancholy to heartwrenching ballads and everything in between. Their purpose is to put us in the characters' heads so that we can feel the isolation with them.
Few filmmakers can create an introspective mood or dreamy headspace like Sofia Coppola. All of us have felt lost or alone, which is why these small, intimate portraits of similar individuals resonate.

Sofia Coppola is one of the greatest female directors of our generation. Her emphasis on characters who deal with isolation and minimalist style of filmmaking make her films stand out in a subtle way.
Agreed!
To me its not just isolation she conveys so well, its also the distance between the viewer and the subject. She makes those characters seem mysterious and they draw you in but you become hyper aware that as a viewer you will never penetrate that isolation and never really understand the character. This is especially pronounced when the character is female as its almost like seeing the woman through the female gaze (instead of the male gaze many directors use) but not quite understanding what you are seeing. The depths of those characters are not for the viewer and are somehow meant only for the character.
Its a quiet deep isolation of being unknown, not of being unseen or alone which leaves the viewer feeling their own isolation and desiring to reach through the screen to tear that wall separating the viewer from the character.
Well said
You should absolutely do Yorgos Lanthimos’ directing style
❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the suggestion! In the meantime you should check out our video on dark humor in The Lobster! czcams.com/video/N6grnNDRVOE/video.html
I've been following your channel for years. and wow, you finally did a video on a female director. more please :)
Coppola's new film Priscilla is getting quite a lot of notoriety. I think that's why they're doing a piece of her right now. if you look at releases and the directors they choose it's usually close to someone's release. So it's more the female directors not putting as much out. But this is a good video.
But I am surprised. I could not find one on Greta Gerwig so you might have a point. I will drop this link for you. I love this interview with greta. I hope you enjoy it. But I mean, you watch Studio Binder so chances are you have seen it.

@@codyeasonBGR I’ve been following them for years. I wrote a comment last year on a different video (can’t remember which one) asking why don’t studiobinder make videos on female directors. They responded saying there weren’t many female directors at the time. I provided a list of female directors for them too. Still nothing. Til now. I’m not sure why they seem to have a preference for male directors across their entire channel. @studiobinder would you like to comment?
@@fahmidamiah how many films had these female directors directed? And how close to known public Consciousness are they? I find they focus on directors that have a body of work, that in your mind you could easily reference without having to have seen a film in a while. Did that list have some one like that?
I love Sofia Coppola movies, she rarely missed. Haven't found a single movie that i dislike, even some of her lesser ones atleast have some enjoyment in it that i can just have a good time watching it. I need Coppola and Kirsten Dunst to reunite for a movie together, one of the best Hollywood duos
That would be great!
My favorite voice-over artist of all time on Studio Binder,
👍
The best CZcams channel for Cinephiles
❤
Sofia Coppola is my favorite director and I love that you finally make a video about her. Thank you so much, Studio Binder
Glad you liked it!
She is one of my favorite directors as well. If you don’t mind me asking what is your favorite movie of hers?
Father and Daughter both of them are just brilliant.... Their movie genres and making are distinct from each other but still both of them are brilliant filmmakers
Sofia is definitely an influence on my short films
Definitely a great director to study!
I love Sofia Coppola, and I think she’s been one of the major inspirations for the short films we put out on our channel (if you want to check it out, that would be awesome!!) because we frequently deal with themes of isolation. As we gear up to make a feature film next year, we can’t wait to employ some of the strategies you’ve presented. Thank you StudioBinder!!
Happy filming!
Can you do Kathryn Bigelow next? She's one of the best female directors of all time and was the first female director to win Best Director at the Oscars. Her filmography is incredible, Zero Dark Thirty is my favourite of hers. I remember being blown away that a movie about the hunting of Osama Bin Laden is directed by a female which is rare for a female director to make a terrorist crime movie like Bigelow with Zero Dark Thirty. Please do Bigelow next if you want to make more of female directors 🙏
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@StudioBinder can you do
Kasi Lemmons, ( eves, Bayou Director)
I’ve never watched a full Sofia Coppola film but I know her name and that’s legend status itself...
Find a film of interest in our video!
This is timely, I am currently working on a short film (using SB) where the main theme is isolation amd solitude, an 'abandoned on an island' exercise where I am trying to drive home the feeling of complete isolation and the desperation that comes with. Nice timing SB.
Good luck!
My favorite series from this channel by far! hope to see episodes about directors outside Hollywood
What directors do you have in mind?
@@StudioBinder Bergman is my favorite! but I'd be happy with any of the legends
Thank you. Gave me thoughts for a local film I am directing next month.
Good luck!
Sofia is probably our favourite directors' favourite director
Sofia Coppola is one of the best directors in cinema and receiving an in-depth analysis video of her very interesting direction on this incredible channel is great.
After years of watching your videos This is my first ever comment on your channel , You should be make video on Alfonso Cuarón.

bong joon ho would be a nice one to see. so far all of his movie (except the first one) have been hits for me
He's a great option for sure!
Would love to see a William Wyler Directing Style video. Perhaps to celebrate when Oscars season is in full swing as he's the most nominated Best Director ever.

Sofia Coppola is one of my absolute favorite female directors of all time, along with Greta Gerwig, Julia Ducournau, Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Campion.
"Somewhere", "Lost in Translation" and "On the Rocks" are my top 3 favorite Sofia Coppola movies.✨
Good choices 💯
As a up and coming Actor I really would love to work with her she know how to calculate the character what a director!

I love this type of video!
Glad you liked it!
Random thought BUT love how this video includes music from the actual movies (mainly Phoenix, being the lead singer is married to Sofia!)
🔥
I know you did an analysis on Vertigo, but may you do a "Directing Style" of Alfred Hitchcock?
He's a prime candidate!
Great video. Only seen the bling ring. But will def check out more of her films
They're well worth a watch!
Your presentations are outstanding. I love Sofia's work, and this outlined her style, perfectly. Please consider Joshua Safdie.
A video on Edgar Wright is long overdue, but I can wait.
We have several vids on him so he hasn't been a priority in Directing Styles. You should check out our Director's Chair vid on him! czcams.com/video/fa_lP82gAZY/video.html
I love Lost in Translación
Great video as always say.
🌍🌟
Cheers!
Excellent as usual. This might be a bit specific, but in the Fabelmans, towards the end of the film, Spielberg has two kitchen scenes back to back; one with Sammy and his mother and one with Sammy and his father. That can't have been a coincidence. They are both great scenes. The blocking and staging are very different in both however and I'd love to see a comparison, showing how a master uses blocking and staging.
Appreciate the suggestion!
Buster Keaton had an incredible style. He used cinema itself and the possibilities of this new art form to tell his stories. So he astonished millions, often without having a script for his movies.
An all-time great!
Thank you gor making these videos!
They are so inspiring!
Maybe you want to cover Todd Solondz in one of your next videos? I know that‘s going to be a difficult one. „Happiness“ is like the slowes carcrash i‘ve ever experienced.
If there's a popular demand we might!
Finally!
🔥
Is that Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter?
Yes!
She's also Michael's daughter in The Godfather Part III.
Nice video ❤
Cheers!
Ari gato studiobinder❤❤

Some ideas for future episodes:

Béla Tarr (The Philosopher)
Ingmar Bergman (The Dramatist)
Robert Bresson (The Ascetic)
I adore this series! Sofia Coppola is one of my faves of all time! But can we get some more diversity? I'd love to see some black and other POC directors.

Fonte: uol
Yo can you talk about the TV show Atlanta, would be really nice to hear about it from this channel. Thanks

Please make a video about Lars von trier ...Directing style
Thanks for the suggestion!
Johnnie To would be a very interesting subject I think.
Thanks for the suggestion!
The lack of coverage, and slow pacing of the shots they do take, make me wonder about Coppola's opinion and methods around 'shoe leather'. I'd imagine it's harder to avoid, but I'm not super familiar with her films to know.
Hopefully our video helps!
Whatkinda camera she used? And how to edit like that ???
Dear Studiobinder, please dedicate an episode to Alejandro Jodorowsky! If you dare! Thx :D
Thanks for the suggestion!
