  • today we're exposing what my reading habits (or lack thereof) have looked like over the last decade...and how audiobooks have allowed me to start enjoying literature again despite how crazy life gets. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the titles I mentioned, as well as recommendations for what I should read next!

I literally just got Libby 3 days ago. They make holders for e-readers with remotes. So you can have the e-reader in a stand and turn the page with a button. Then I'm able to crochet and read at the same time.

I grabbed my project and was ready to sit and listen! As an adult, I've been wanting to get back into reading for years but I, too, have an attention span issue where I need to be doing multiple things so I've been recommended audiobooks but i'm rather hesitant. I was able to read 6 chapters of a book I read in high school on a plane a few weeks ago and that felt really nice, but just like you mentioned, I wanna be crocheting while I do it and I Just can't do that lol

  • @TheSimplydar

Libby is the best! I'm glad I'm not alone when I hear a narrator doing all the voices lol. If you're looking for recs my all-time favorite audiobook is a three-way tie between Daisy Jones and the Six (full cast it was incredible), Night Circus, and the whole The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy because Lisbeth Salander is an icon. The My Brilliant Friend series is also great!

Really agree with your thoughts on Stay True! It's so interesting reading perspectives of older Asian American writers since I didn't know any Asian American people outside of my age bracket growing up lol
Seconding someone else's recommendation for the Thursday Murder Club! They're so fun!! Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers is also a cute lil mystery read
Not light-hearted, but also throwing in a rec for A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki! So many thoughts with this one

if you still want another depressing memoir, read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. i just read it last week and DEAR GODDD that made me cry. i had heard about it briefly a long time ago but hadn't realized how popular it was. i really liked the writing and getting to hear all of the details of every story Jeannette told. i know you literally asked for non-depressing memoirs at some point in the video but i'm still going to recommend this book. it was the first memoir i've read but i loved itttt.
oh also, about The Hunger Games, i just reread them for the first time in about 5ish years in november...i fell right back in love with them. i think they're just so beautifully written and so gut-wrenching 💔 i just went to barnes&noble today and bought Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes and i'm so excited to read it (funnily enough, i'm reading it right after reading a silly little enemies-to-lovers romance book - it's called The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren and it's so silly, i adore it)

I loved this so much. Thank you for all the recommendations. I did read the hunger games that’s all I’ve read that you read and I read them because my friend read them for her child and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I thought they were excellent but I’ve been writing down a lot of the books you said, I was afraid to read the one by Jenny mcCurdy I was kind of afraid I’ve seen her on all the Disney I was afraid it would change the way I feel about her😂 I cannot wait to see what your crocheting and what is coming up next!!! I love a sad memoir, especially on audiobook. My number one favourite memoir is In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (who is one of my favourite authors of fiction) but I’ve actually only read it physically so I can’t vouch for the audiobook experience. Each chapter is told in a different literary style so I don’t know if it loses some of that in the audiobook, I remember there being a choose your own adventure style chapter, but it’s beautiful, also very dark as it’s the story of an abusive relationship the author had with her ex-girlfriend.
I think that you might vibe with some of Akwaeke Emezi’s stuff and while it’s not my fave of theirs a lot of my friends love You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty. It’s a really good combo of introspective sad girl and kinda smutty romance.
I read a lot, I’m having kind of slow year so I’ve only finished 59 books so far so my head just immediately started to fill with recommendations watching this video, sorry if they’re unwanted. 😅

A book I read that I really liked was The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams, it’s very wholesome but I wouldn’t say it’s a light read. It is about a character learning about how they actually kind of love reading even though they never thought they would/their loved one loved it so it was their love one’s “thing” not theirs. There’s some things in it that make be a trigger for some people so of course look up trigger warnings before you read, but if this causes anyone to pick it up I hope you enjoy!

idk what the rules are in ny but most california librarys just want a state id to get a card and I literally apply for cards whenever I visit friends in other countys. I have 7 cards on libby, highly recommend especially since your library is the first ive heard of having a 5 book hold limit??? 👀 perhaps a family member would be willing to let you add their card on your libby 👀.
as for audiobook recommendations, I agree the daisy jones audiobook is that girl. I also really enjoyed the dual narrators in How to Sell a Haunted House, which was terrifying! For something more lighthearted, the narrator for Percy Jackson and the Chalise of the Gods did a great job with capturing the vibes of different characters although idk if you've kept up with the series.
this was a delightful podcast ep, I've been reading thru audiobooks recently so I could knit 😂

    Here are some recommendations:
For Mystery/Thriller Riley Sager is v popular, his most recent book, The Only One Left is pretty good. The Decagon House Murders is a Japanese mystery that's been translated in recent years. (This is next on my list of books to read!) Yellowface is also along the lines of a thriller, but it's mostly satire/commentary on publishing. Mona Awad is also an author that writes, not...mystery books but definitely adjacent. (Such as Rouge and Bunny).
For historical romance you can't go wrong with Courtney Milan (victorian era, mostly) and Tessa Dare (regency, very light hearted.) I will say I haven't listened to their audiobooks, so cavet.
For more general fiction Daisy Jones and the Six has a great audiobook (an interview with a fictional band from the 60s/70s). 📚

I read the hunger games series and the divergent series regularly. I love dystopian end of world society books. I enjoyed your take on these books. Dont try to make it a collegiate review of writing styles. I just want to know what you took from it what you liked about it. I have been thinking about reading jeanettes book "I am glad my mother died" but I can't take on anyone else's trauma. I haven't had much but if its not fiction it will haunt me. I intend to read the end of world book you mentioned and the tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. I also have libby in dayton oh. Thanks for sharing!!!

I feel like I kinda fell off the reading train as it were too…cuz of crafting 😅 I used to read ALL the time it was actually insane, currently I’m re-reading true grit by that one guy, and my all time favorite audiobook is the howls moving castle series. I kid you not I have listened to the whole thing at least 20 times, I LOVE the narrator. I heard someone say she made the characters sound snooty and that made me so sad because I love how she narrates them lol. Anyway great video as always 🤍

I have been an audio book addicted cor years.b still love a good book in my hands. I love having my books with he everywhere I go. I also have library cards cor three libraries. I have a recommendation. Deborah Harkness is the author. It is the All Souls Trillogy there is a 4th book is amazing and the 5th bok in the All Souls World comes out in July. This series is full of history. Dr. Harkness is a history professor and her ability to wrote fiction with true history thrown n is amazing.

Has anyone recommended Yellowface to you yet? I found it fascinating to follow a protagonist I didn't much care for. Also, if you like period smut, the big YA trend seems to be fantasy smut. A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Maas is really popular with adults now. A lot of these memoirs I have been meaning to get to, but the depressing aspect of them has me constantly picking up something more light and fluffy.

And No Longer Human, really known for it's deep history. It's about a guy that never felt right in the social standarts. I can say no more for any spoilers... good book but hard to read.
