  • Mo Rocca meets with curator Kristen Gallerneaux to talk about the innovations in printing, from the 15th-century Gutenberg printing press to the mid-1800s Washington Press found in Greenfield Village.
    From the collections of The Henry Ford: The Washington Press established two innovations in printing history: a lightened metal frame for easier transport, and a toggle-joint mechanism to create impressions. Over 6000 of these rugged hand presses were sold between 1835-1902; many specialist printers continue to use them today. This press was donated by George Booth, Detroit News publisher and founder of the Cranbrook Educational Community.

    "The printing press democratized knowledge. As mechanical improvements were made, printing became faster and cheaper. By extension, the content of newspapers and books diversified, and the printed word was distributed on a mass scale. This collection documents the mechanical lineage of printing presses, from a circa 1809 Ramage--one of the oldest surviving hand presses in the country--to the efficient Mergenthaler Linotype composing machine."

    Mo's my Uncle In law. I remember talking to him about printing like this at my grandpa's funeral and he actually gave me some good stories. Great job, Uncle Mo!

    William Caxton was an English merchant, diplomat, and writer. He is thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England, in 1476,

    The California Job Case - has a cool story. Before the California Job Case the type was kept in 2 cases. Upper & Lower, We still use this term today, Upper & Lower but we use the shift key on our computers.Cool video about printing. 😎

      The Job case came about because of the invention of Linotype and Monotype. Large numbers of pages of type no longer needed to be set by hand! The jobbing case was used for corrections and display setting. Used both in my 30 years or so as a compositor in the UK.

    Having to place the print backwards must have had something to do with printing on both sides???

    • @Shrimp_Insurance
      @Shrimp_Insurance Před 9 měsíci +1

      It's because when you use what is essentially a stamp you're going to get a mirrored image on the paper. If the text stamps weren't mirrored then the print would end up backwards on the paper

    This video is full of errors, starting with "depending on the font" and "letter by letter, and you also had to do it backwards" these statements are stercoraceous at best.

    • @Shrimp_Insurance
      @Shrimp_Insurance Před 9 měsíci

      It's a mirrored image, of course the letter stamps had to be backwards. Otherwise what you print onto the paper would be backwards.
