This is my homemade Rooftop tent I've been working on for the past few weeks. Let me know if you would like to see a "how to" video on this. (UPDATE) Weight is 137lbs. Not bad!

I love when people take matters into their own hands and save a boat load of money on an idea that probably seemed crazy to peers. Excellent job!
just because you're crazy doesn't mean you're wrong
Sometimes you have to take matters in your own hand May God bless 🙏 them😊
The pop up action was super impressive
Thank you! I am wanting to do a more detailed video on how to build the lifting mechanism but without welding anything
@@PatrickRemingtonwaiting on this video unless I’ve just not come across it yet? Trying to figure out how to do mine!
One of the most impressive DIY builds I've seen. Great job.
This is an inspiration, awesome job. I'm in the market for an RTT but am quite capable of building my own for a fraction of the cost. I love using things you've built with your own hands. Props to you sir.
Excellent build, I actually like the woody look. It opens better than some of the commercial units, I'm impressed.
I like your easy opening -well thought through project!I'm impressed of it's simplicity-Thanks for showing this!
I was so long trying to build such thing but I haven’t got any information on the design, now I think I can give a try to it. Thanks 🙏 man 💕
Thank you for these videos. Building a truck camper. But I want to do a pop up top on it. I'm really inspired by your build. Thanks again keep the videos coming
Beautifully made, also consider adding ropes or a support rod from bottom to top in X pattern this will help during high winds.
i have been looking around for ideas for this exact project lol.... you just gave me hope..!!! nailed it bro.!!
those struts are the bomb ! super cool build, thanks for sharing
What size and strength are those struts love your tent
I think they are 150lbs struts. I just posted a new video where I talk a little more about how I made the lifting arms! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Excellent job on your RTT. You have inspired me to maybe start one of my own.
I feel that this is pretty doable. Congratulations for your project, I might design something similar for a diy camper roof tent.
Simple yet effective. Lovely build.
very good work!!! I've been thinking about making a similar one for a long time !! I love that idea of hinges !!
Well done mate. Might try those slide together tent pole and canvas also.
Amazing! Congratulations! Very nice job, been thinking about something along those lines myself, good inspiration!
That lift/open mechanism is great.
Dude that is so cool!! I'm impressed.
Wow! The light finger action on that is amazing! I’m thinking of just putting a pop-up tent on some ply wood and there’s actually a video of a guy doing it. Lol
Great work and great bit of kit. Well done!!
Great job ! For sure the "how to video" ! Thanks for sharing your tips.
I have been looking at these, but the cost! This is an epic build and has so much potential!! Great job! Thanks dude 🤟
I have a Silverado with the 5'-8" bed. I am thinking about a diy truck cap with something like this on top extending partially over the cab to give the length to camp and still be able to use my truck bed. Thanks for sharing as I believe a similar cap / rooftop tent will do the trick!
Looking at the zipped door, on factory made one’s the canvas extends past the end of the zip by about 2inch. Just to keep the door from letting water drip in when it’s windy. A great piece of work, I bet there have been some evolutions or modifications made as time has gone on.
Its wonderful idea. A moving home!
instablaster...
Overland nation. This just became my favorite chanel. Keep up the the good work.
Great job Holmes!
Nice. Can’t Wait to see the finished product.
A fantastic build, well done.
That thing is awesome! Forget buying one when you can make a custom version!
It's not always about saving money, any successful DIY is very satisfying!! even if you spent more than what's available on the shelf.
I agree! I learned a ton from building this!
Very nice work! I' too, would like to see more on how you built it.
I'd love to see a how to! With as much as I work, I'd probably just hire you to make one for me😂😂
Great job Patrick.
You know what would be really cool? Take your vehicle and make it a ragtop--they sell kits to do this. Then, cut a hole in your tent base, sew windows in your pop up and you've got a vehicle you can stand in, cook in, sleep in, etc etc. Once you can stand in a car, you have so many possibilities. Not just that, but if you made your topper such that you could remove it, it can go from ragtop enjoying summer sun to camping just by installing it back on your car. The fact that the lid is light really opens up possibilities. You do such great work!
Thank you very much for making this video.. I made my own version of pop top tent learning from you.. 👍
Wow! That's amazing! Nice job...
So inspirational and would love to see a how to video on this please. Especially were the gas struts are concerned.
Great work
I am working a how-to for a clamshell design RTT. Just posted the final product video for this tent! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Very nicely done!
I for one love to see how you made the lift. Hope make more vids of this project.
New video is up!! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Looks really good man nice job
4x8 plywood and a little pop tent would do too. Great job!
Sweet skills and an awesome build!
Awesome job pal !!
I would love to see this once complete.
Nice work chap. Nice zip sewing too!
Great work!! I wish I was so handy
when i build mine, it will be with the hydraulic lifts from my 08 odyssey rear hatch and some heavy canvas
Great job!
This is so nice. Wow.
Coming late to this GREAT VIDEO!! YES, YES WOULD LOVE TO SEE A HOW-TO VIDEO.
I am working on a how-to series now! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html

I will try to do one.
Great work.
Bro that is dope. Looks awesome. Good work.
Thank you!
Yes a how too would be extremely appreciated, I've been looking for something exactly like this
Working on it! Here is the final product video! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Impressive. Even looks more aero than the ones you buy
brilliant. well done.
I’d like to see a how-to on how you tackled the strut portion of the build
Very impressive!
I've been thinking of something like that for the top of a 5 foot hard wall trailer
Nice job !!!
this is amazing! great work!
Thanks! check out the finished product! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Dude! you're really good with your hand! Kudos man!
Thanks, man!
I’m trying to figure out how to build something to pull with my harly something like the mini mate. Dude you should see that thing!
Simply outstanding.......
Great concept, shall wait for the new release
Finally posting a finished product video! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
impressive, the combination of hydraulic lift is amazing.
Nice job man
I would love to see a how to on this and also what pistons did you use for the inside
This is so cool
This is brilliant! I'd like to do a pop up roof like this on a tiny house in the loft area for more head room. Where can I get those pistons?
Hi Patric, great project. Any chances that You could share plans of gas springs mechanism?
I know this isn't a plans video for it but I did post a new video where I talk a little more about how I made the lifting mechanism. czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Excellent design.
Thanks! Here is the finished product! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Incredible craftsmanship mate!
Thanks! Check out the final product! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Thanks a lot for this! Just watched your followup review. I was curious how you prevent water from running off the canvas into the wood below, how does your fabric wall meet the floor? Silicone caulk or anything like that? The design is so solid, looks like it'd last you a while, I'd just hate for the baseboard to get damp.
man you are a genius
Love this. I would be able to make the structure. But any idea where I could find similar gas struts?
This is great, I think I would be able to do this with a how to video, let me know if you do one or have anymore info with the materials you used. great job!
Yes, I would love a "how to" video! Or just design plans if you have them. I'll pay you for them for sure. Those gas struts are dope! I really want a rooftop for my 87 Grand Wagoneer and all the companies online are outrageously expensive. I get why but damn I don't camp often enough to drop 1K on a tent.
I am working on a how-to series now! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
great job sir
This is awesome. Was looking for one but the prices shocked me. Great video!!
Thanks! check out the finished product! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Thanks for your energy ... I like your work ! Super would be to integrate light and flexible solar panels and/or plexiglass to see the stars !?
The plexiglass would be fantastic, especially if you put a sliding compartment so it doesn't heat up so much in the summer
Thanks for your inspiring videos.
You have made different models of rooftop tents. What is your experience in using them. Pros and cons this model vs. clamshell model?
Here, use aluminum for framing air alloy for insulation and azdale panels. Gas struts to help raise the pop up shelter with built in frameless windows and a door into azdale panels that fold up from floor and down from the ceiling that swivel lock into place with weather striping on all securing points. You can design a cube or a yurt type design that you can attach to the roof of a car and lift off and place on the ground for a pop up mobile home. You could even design a pop up bathroom with a cartridge toilet and cartridge shower you could connect to the main structure. Or design them modular and carry a few of them on a utility trailer and have a true shelter instead of a tent when camping or for emergency use? ; )
You just save a couple of thousand dollars! Way to go! I am about to drop $4k on one! Enjoy your journey!
Well done
My inspiration
Great project!! Looking forward to a DIY!
How much does it weight? Measurements of the unit and height when the gas pistone arms. How many Newton are maximum on the gas pistone arms? Would love to get a list of the materials you have used. Also how you solved the brackets to actually attach the "RTT" on your car. Just some ideas and wishes of information I would like to know in your DIY video later on.
Good luck finishing the project!
Cheers!
Any update on a how to video? I'm mainly looking for a parts list or source on the lifting arm mounts? only finding the gas springs so far.
good job!
you are a genius
Nice work
Like dude....you gave me what i needed but I dont weld. I see folks using only the struts but you put on your own hinges....for a two part easy lift. any idea about how I can buy similar hinges? Subscribed. You are brilliant
Dang! That's really good... the only thing I kind of concern about is the bottom part of the build. I see that you have the fabric going down to a channel on the top of the lower frame. When it rains, the water would go down to that channel and maybe you're thinking of adding a channel outlet for the water to exit? If I was going to make that, I would have the cloth part hanging over the bottom frame so the rainwater or dew would just drop straight down at the same time, you're protecting the bottom frame from the water. Oh dang it, I didn't realize until now that this video is 4 years old hahaha!
Love it. It would be great to see a "How to" video with an included parts list and where to buy them.
Fantastic idea, and a credit to you too. Would be great if you could do a how to video as I'm very interested in building something similar myself.
I am working on a "how too" video now! czcams.com/video/841GzQ5rd9o/video.html
Looks amazing! Inspired me to build one of my own instead of spending that kind of money on retail. How is it holding up against the wind when camping?
