William Jacobson: It's Time to Defund Universities that Promote Antisemitism | Top Story

  • American Jewry was taken by storm as a wave of not only anti-Israel but also antisemitic protests exploded across US campuses. Worse yet, campus leaders and university presidents stood idly as Jewish students were intimidated, shouted down and in some cases assaulted. How did this happen? More importantly, what can be done? Can universities and academia be reformed?
    To discuss all this, JNS editor-in-chief talks with the founder of Legal Insurrection and a decades-long fighter for Western values and free speech to be preserved on campus William Jacobson.
    "Outside pressure is the only thing that can protect our society from what's going on on the campuses."

    The problem is, for over half a century students have been taught lies. I tried taking a middle eastern history class, at UCLA, in 1977. The textbook was a tissue of lies, that ignored all the history of the indigenous peoples of the Levant, Jews, Yazidis, Kurds, Copts, Maronites, etc. and pretended that Arabs always lived there. I went to the ombudsman's office, to complain, and was told there was nothing that could be done, because Saudi Arabia owned that department. They hired the professors, chose the texts, and set the curricula. When I told Hillel about this, they were unconcerned, as all their effort was in freeing the refuseniks. I'm not the only student who complained, but no Jewish organization gave a damn.

      Yeah, people don’t really consider the societal parts. Israel is a peaceful democratic country willing to work with others and focus on growth. Palestine is a Jihad hateful brainwashing self harming group that plays victim about everything. No nayyer what you feel about the past, only an idiot would blame that difference on “land” or “oppression”. You don’t have to study much history to know events and conflict don’t prevent peace, especially when one group is as easy to work with as Israel. All you have to do is not be genocidal or racist. They’ve literally said this, the Palestinians can have their own country if they aren’t genocidal. It’s a values issue.

      @@samuelalonso22 Indeed so - it is no longer the party I became part of when I came of age. We now have the Democrat Jim Crow practices of ballot harvesting, registering non-citizens to vote among many other forms of election interference (not the least of which is the Trump lawfare debacle) being practiced by this party that dilutes the votes and voices of citizens. Indeed the "royalist" Democrats proudly assert that they are the anti-populist party (read: they are no longer the party of the people). When it comes to the plight of those facing the economic travails caused inflation, one can almost imagine them say, "Let them eat cake." They've aligned themselves with the Nazis of the 21st century. They are elitists who are out for their own interests. When Nancy says, "we have to do this for the children," she's talking about her own children and grandchildren - not ours.

    Very sobering interview about how much of a problem antisemitism and anti-Israel hatred is in the universities, these problems were around for a long time, but October 7th uncovered the scab. However, this problem isn't very complicated, it all starts at the top. In Florida, Ron Desantis stopped the encampments about fifteen minutes after they started. He made a public declaration that these activities will not be tolerated on any campus in Florida. They didn't have negotiations with the protesters. As a result, all students could attend school in peace and safety. Hopefully, if Trump wins the election, they will cut funding to these schools that are unwilling to change. The schools lack moral clarity, and a complete overhaul of school leadership and faculty needs to happen.

    Mr. Jacobson's comments are to the point although he underestimates the time frame involved: there was no "free marketplace of ideas" in the universities I attended, and I was Class of 1975. I solved my problem by transferring to the engineering school and later had a successful, 50 year career as a warship designer. Indeed, American academia is sick, and has been since universities caved to student activism in 1968. We should heed Dr. Jacobson's suggestions and seek more adult supervision of Federal funds, but we also need to get better control over foreign students -- they are another source of radical ideology -- and foreign donations, which, as one of the other posts says, is rewarding the hiring of more professors of Middle Eastern history with a lopsided Arabist background. Not only might it be necessary to interfere in the faculty hiring process, but also to reform the tenure process and remove some of the deadwood. I'd like to see alternative universities and disagree with Dr. Jacobson -- he's assuming the alternative universities must be organized and funded like today's. I think free enterprise could find better ways of educating the young.

    • @TheBalterok
      @TheBalterok Před 9 dny

      @@alesh2275 of course, it would. The problem with dept of Ed and American education does not begin with the absurd leftists ideas and their clever decades long strategy of institutional infiltration. It begins with the parents, the regular moms and dads that for old reasons do not participate in the education of their kids and would rather let someone handle it. In today’s American public school the kids are often instructed by their teachers not to reveal study materials to their parents and it only became known during the covid quarantine when kids where learning by Zoom what exactly they are being taught, also resulting in much uncovering of the details of the trans epidemic. Getting rid of monopolized government education will most definitely change the infiltration of woke cretinism into a public mind - faced with a choice a parent WILL actually try to choose a school for a kid, - would it be very safe to assume that people that have kids would want them to have a kind of education that will perpetuate these values, family, kids, prosperity, rather than the stuff now being offered by the complete prvrts, let’s just begin to speak more honestly. The woke idiocy will be forgotten and done with within a period from first grade to 12th. Bombing, killing, annihilating the damned dept of education is the first and most essential medicine to heal America and all of the West. Whether this is the only measure required is a question, but without it - dissolution of the current education monopoly - America will be finished within a few generations.
