    Okay, grout suggestions:
    Laticrete #56 Desert Khaki or #27 Hemp (FYI the Permacolor Select has built in anti-stain/anti-mold properties)
    Mapei #35 Navajo Brown
    Custom #382 Bone or #183 Chateau
    Either Bedrosians or Floor and Decor should have grout samples.
    And PLEASE make a point to seal the travertine before grouting so the grout doesn’t seep into the stone and stain the edges!

    I have to tell you guys a funny story about grout.... We moved to the Bay Area of California when our kids were very young. Our house was in a community with a lot of hills, and the dirt was a dark, brown color. So after having our first floor completely tiled, I took a sample of dirt and matched the grout to it!😂 No worries about muddy shoes messing up our grout!!

    Drew, be sure you put a sealer over all grouted tile areas so when a liquid is spilled it won’t absorb into stone or grout, which will happen b4 you can grab a towel. A sealer will also make it easier to clean up shattered glass from a jar, dishes or glasses. You might even seal it twice. It’s a big troublesome problem if you don’t.

    • @kathyreese4052
      @kathyreese4052 Před rokem +2

      They make a really cool additive for grout that has a polycarbonate in it so you don't have to seal the grout anymore and makes the grout non porous. They carry it at home depot.

      @msplum3306 Před rokem +2

      @@kathyreese4052 Great to know that! What about for the stone itself? Like brick? My sister had a brick kitchen floor and after spills and glass breakage, her husband finally sealed the entire floor w/several coats. Prior to dealing Her small kids were also tearing up their bare feet and would fall as socks caught on rough bricks.The floor was already there when they bought the house. Guess was best choice in their situation.

    do make sure you seal the tiles. Because any food or whatever you drop on the floor will stain them. Also, I would go with a lighter color grout as opposed to a darker tile grout. The reason being you want the tile to be the star of the show as opposed to the grout being the star of the show. And I can't remember if you can seal the grout or not but if you can I would highly recommend it. I just have dealt with tile when you spill stuff on the floor and it's a pain to get up.

    Drew, you might test grout on a tile before you actually install the grout. I had some very similar tile and could not get the grout wiped off of it. My tile was not sealed or glazed. Luckily it was outside and I had it power washed to get it clean but it was a mess. After power washing, I had to go back in and patch the grout that came out during the process. I'm not sure if it was the brand of grout I had or the finish on the tile but if it were inside, I don't know how I would have cleaned it off. You might take some of your tile to the store where you buy your grout so they can guide you.

    The tile is beautiful and you’ve done a great job, especially since it’s your first time doing a floor. Once you seal the tile, will that help keep dirt from settling into the natural holes in the stone? That’s my concern with tumbled stone tile.

    Just to let you know, when there is no tile under the cabinets, it’s because the contractor cut the corner to save money…we renovate our kitchen and we did put tiles under the cabinets. If the next owner want to change the layout of the kitchen, at least he will not have to worry about matching the old tiles with the new ones. It is the same with wood floor.

      That's not entirely true. They advise you not to put certain flooring materials under cabinets due to expansion/contraction of the floor, and the potential for it messing up the leveling of your cabinets over time. We were perfectly willing to pay to put our flooring under the cabinets in our renovation but were told we should not do it.

    • @aviditee
      @aviditee Před rokem +4

      Currently remodeling our home and we’ve too decided to run the flooring under the cabinets - so that in the future, either us or new owners can change cabinets without having to also re-do or match the flooring.

    When this tile project first started, I hated it. I thought he was so wrong on everything, from the tile choice itself to the not measuring the distance between tiles, etc. But now, I'm loving it. I'm as relieved as if this was my own freaking kitchen. So excited to see the final project!

  • @shelleyplemons1362
    @shelleyplemons1362 Před rokem +7

    Use a dark brown grout to match the cabinets either that or neutral so that you focus on the tile and not the grout

    • @cece9145
      @cece9145 Před rokem +2

      I also agree! It would be too much competition for the rest of the kitchen.
      Floors are generally appealing due to their texture or color, not the gout lines or grout color.
      It would be too much with all that has been incorporated so well!

    I adore what you've done so far! When it comes to grout color, look into MAPEI Warm Grey or Navajo Brown. I used both recently (after much sampling & stressing hard on this decision) & couldn't be happier with how they look! And even with sealing the stone before grouting, you will end up with some grout in the imperfections in the stone...ask me how I know, lol!

    I cannot wait to see your choice of grout... it can really change the look completely! I have done a lot of tiling myself in former homes and really enjoy the process... you have the patience to do it right! Keep on this delicious journey... it will mean so much more for you to have done it yourself. PS I have seen professionals tile both under cabinets and in front of them... just be sure to keep a spare box in the attic or storage in case you need to repair...in one house I had to dig out the tile in order to replace the dishwasher, then re-tile in front....a pain but certainly not impossible!
