Fiat 124 Sport Spider...the original / Why was so successful ? Near 200 000 were made!

My first new car was a French Blue 1971 Fiat 124 Spider with the glorious 1608 cc Twin Cam motor. I was 22 years old and had just returned from Southeast Asia. Today I own a 1976 Lancia Scorpion #1438 out of 1806 imported to the USA (which I bought new) and a 2019 Abarth 124 Spider.

Same for me, 1971Fiat Spyder in Passitano Yellow. Drove it cross-country after I left the Navy in June 1971 from San Diego. Loved the five speed!

Another iconic and legendary car. Loving the design of all these 124 Spiders - no matter if it is the old or new one. Really beautiful cars and the entire 124 line was a success for Fiat when also seeing all the license productions even in the Soviet Union. Although they didn't build a Spider over there at the VAZ factory.

One of the masterpieces of Tom Tjaarda…the mass-produced version was a compromise between Fiat and Pininfarina, in fact Tjaarda did not want it as we know it.
There is an example, here in Italy, with the real specifications of Tjaarda, just as he wanted it...

But Fiat he didn't approve of it.

The rondine obviously paid it's tribute to Chevrolet while the Fiat 124 Spider did so to Fiat (and Ferrari).
