A Week in Cosmic on BARE METAL!

- I spent a full 7 days working the day job and playing around in the new Cosmic desktop from System76's Pop!_OS.
Some things I forgot to mention in the video:
- Would like to have a pywal type effect that would change the accent and active hint colors to match the current wallpaper.
- Im using 2 GB of ram at idle. During my normal workday with 3 browsers, 6-9 tabs open and the occasional Libreoffice sheet open. Ram was typically around 5-6 GB avg with one peak that I noticed was up to 10 GB when I also had a vm running for a short while. These are nearly the same that I get with Pop shell (gnome version) on the same machine.
- Multi monitor on Cosmic is a dream come true. This is the proper way for a DE to implement tiling window features. Not this convoluted crap that Gnome and KDE did. Its obvious that the Cosmic devs are true tiling window manager fans. This is 100% AWESOME! A user wants to take advantage of multiple desktops. Most will use 1 or 2 windows per desktop. Cosmic makes me think of what you would get if i3/bspwm and gnome had a baby. - Věda a technologie
Im very exited for this!
I only hope they polish a bit more the top and bottom bar, icons, and buttons
I think when this is releasing it will definitely attract more peoples into pop os ❤
Really looking forward to this. I've also been using PopOS as my daily driver for the last 24 months or so.
The workspace stuff has sold me. That was the one thing I need info on.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks :)
Looks cool. I'm pretty new to Linux but might give this a try. I like this UI
great work UB :)
Thanks 😁
Could you go through all the settings and show what it option does? I'm particularly interested in workspace config.
Nice
I'm running cosmic on my main machine.
how's the experience been? make a video!
Nice!
I get the Cosmic thing, but Hyprland has what I was looking for in an environment. Cosmic looks like Gnome with tiling enhancements.
Not sure I see the comparison. It's more like what Xfce wants to be if it were made from the ground up in Rust. You have a collection of interface components with panels, and you can configure your desktop layout in any way you want by dragging and dropping applets around your panels and desktop.
Can make it look like gnome or kde even but also has tiling like i3/sway/hyprland. Best of both worlds. Plus its built in rust so speed over Gnome or QT will be a huge benefit.
waiting for binaries to hit AUR
Long life to the aur
It looks good and I'm looking forward to it, but I can't imagine not having the Activities Overview like in GNOME Shell.
There’s an overview in COSMIC.
@@edfloreshz Excellent.
There will be. It's just not activated yet.
@@unklebonehead You can toggle it by clicking on the current workspace.
Appreciate the video, but in 4 years, everyhing will be voice centered, most UIs will get obsolete so quick
Not so sure
I don't think so....
Have you seen Cortana?
I want nothing to do with that kind of AI. I’ll still be using a regular desktop environment.
Lol, I dont want to waste my time talking to my pc 😂
