Rebuilding & UPGRADING the Factory SAAB Fuel Pump Assembly

  • In this video I show how I rebuilt and upgraded my factory fuel pump assembly in my 2008 SAAB 9-3 Aero. This same procedure can be used on 2003 and up new gen (NG) 9-3's.     MY MAN!!!!!! I did the same thing for my 2004 Saab 9-3 2.0 as well as my 2009 Saab -9-3 v6 using Walbro GSS341-400-791 with fuel strainer. I used everything not wasting anything!!!!!!

      Nice! Walbro is another great fuel pump brand and one I considered before going with the AEM.

      Thats the 225LPH any problems with it I thought the 342 was better because the filter is in the back not in the front like the 341 is

    That's my photo of the new internal filter, glad you inserted it for future reference. I bought a cheap pump assembly from Amazon to replace the original orings and that filter. I haven't seen another replacement filter anywhere.. The original filter that I pulled from my basket was atrocious.

      I'm glad you took that photo because I never would have known about that internal filter! I think going your route buying a new cheap assembly and upgraded with a better fuel pump is likely the best route to go.

    Another excellent video Gary, thanks. Since most of our 9-3s have over 100k by now, it might be easier and just as cost effective to purchase a complete off brand assembly and then replace the pump with an AEM or Walbro pump. At least that way all the parts are new including the internal filter.

      Thanks! Yeah it might be worth while to buy a new cheap assembly then upgrade the pump. That way you get all new internals and especially a new internal filter.

      Except watch out as new assemblies don't come with the ocer pressure tank relief valve.

    P0089 issue. I assume you replaced fuel pressure regulator, or you at least cleaned it. I hope you also cleaned the fuel line in engine compartment. The "straw" comment was right. there's the exact issue, clogged lines by high temp in the engine bay and fuel parts that dry on the walls of the lines. Then the pump has to work more.

    I’m using the basket off a 2.0t modified it so that I can keep the wiring since it’s plug and play to the aem pump all I have to change over is the check valve and a green one way check valve at the bottom of the basket on the xwd v6 9-3 I have to make my own nylon fuel lines since I destroyed the ones off my original basket but I sourced some new fuel connectors to go along with it so it’s a Frankenstein fuel pump at the moment changed all the charcoal canisters leak tested every line just in case I’m hoping to just be done with the p0087 and p0089 codes I keep getting even after replacing the fuel pressure sensor twice 😂 map sensor fuel injector o rings got them ultra sonic cleaned this would be my 4th time dropping the tank so hopefully this is the last time 🤞p.s. Pro parts Sweden pumps don’t work good at all I’m using it for parts lol it only gave me 1.2 bar of fuel pressure and would drop to 0.9

    Just to confirm, the AEM pump will work with the V6 XWD with out issues as well?
    I did buy the Proparts replacement pump but reading the comments here I'm better of replacing the pump.
    The rest of the proparts assy is okey to use?

    I have an issue with my 08 Vector where I've replaced the pump TWICE and I still get intermittent, empty fuel gauge readings and I have no idea what could cause this. Any thoughts? DTE also just shows three lines. However the dash doesn't say I need to refuel until I'm actually very low on gas.

      Nope, shouldn't need a tune. It's my understanding the car will sort of relearn and will only command as much fuel as it needs. In my case since I've recently added a bigger turbo, intercooler, charge pipes and high flow exhaust I will be getting a tune.

    I wish I could do this on my 2008 Saab 9-5. I had an Aeromotive pump ready to swap in, but the pump wouldn't fit inside of the cylinder hole within the assembly. For the aftermarket pump you bought, is the diameter the same as that of the OEM Walboro pump?

    ~@3:00 what kind of liquid is it there in the black container? Thank you for a good film, I've learned among other things how to cut that black pipe off (~@7:00).

      In the black drain pan is just fuel that drained out of the fuel pump basket while disassembling it. I didn't want to make a mess so I contained it as best as I could.

      Hello, the tool I used is a bit pricey but great to have for electronical work. I'm sure you can find something similar for cheaper but the exact one used is by Paladin Tools (#PA1306) wire crimping tool: amzn.to/3XcUTPH

    Thank you for this video! I’m in the middle of same process. Is there a chance you can share any numbers for internal filter? Also in comments someone mentioned buying a cheap assembly and rebuilding it and I strongly advise against it since my pro parts Sweden ab ended up with low quality connectors and burned up in less than a year.

    Would you happen to have the part number for the strainer i purchased the Racetronix one from maptune but it didnt come with a strainer. Hopeing someone might have the part number for one

    Was the AEM pump installed too low? I feel like the position you chose would hit the bottom and clog easily?

      Nope, placement is very close to factory with no issues 2yrs later and many miles later. Tuner even verified perfect flow rate with room to grow if I ever wanted to go with an even bigger turbo.

    Doesn't your pump have a check valve that fails and relieves the gas back into the tank, making it a pia to start after a day of sitting? Or it only applies to pre 2003 fuel pumps?

      It does have that built in check valve but they're not common to fail. What is common is to get a replacement 2.8L fuel pump and it not have that check valve which causes your mentioned starting issues.

      What you’re experiencing when you do use an aftermarket pump is vapor lock. The valve in question is a pulse modulator and it is required. I found this the hard way by using the Delphi FG2212 pump and it will often not start on the first key turn or start hard and then even out once the fuel gets to the rail. The pumps have check valves in them but the pulse modulator is missing. They can be had from Saab but probably won’t fit aftermarket pumps. The top plates are different

    Is the AEM pump pwm compatible as I’ve looked on their website and there is no information and they do not reply to emails.
    I’ve been told by a fuel supply specialist the oem pump for ours is 400lph and this AEM one is less. Have you had any issues at all?

      No issues at all with fueling with this AEM pump. The cars conservatively tuned at 355hp and 420tq and my limiting factor is the turbo. I have enough fuel pump available to go for more power if I swapped turbos but already the car is more than enough for a daily 💪

    For XWD 2.8s, you'll be doing pretty much this exact process but you'll be using a the Aeromotive 11542-340 pump. There, I saved the 100 people who own a XWD 2.8 several pages of forum searches and responses from that rude Finnish guy on SC. The ProParts Sweden assembly will fail after a few hundred miles or may not start at all. ProParts is JUNK. Please AVOID. If it says Orio, as the make, it is made by ProParts.

    Gary, I’m just curious why you chose AEM brand. I want to replace my pump in my 07, as part of a rebuild, and since dropping the tank is at the bottom of my fun things to do list, I would want a pump that has the potential to last 200k miles like the pump currently installed. Never a problem with the current pump, but I know how long they last, and hate being stranded. What do you know about AEM besides the great prices? Thanks!

      I've used AEM pumps in the past on other projects. My #1 that I've had the best luck with when it comes to fuel pumps is Walbro and a close 2nd is AEM. I think both are great brands and the AEM tends to be cheaper. I know a few others that have had goodluck running AEM's in their Saabs, so that's what led me to go with it over more expensive pumps.

      @@WeakestofWeeks Thanks, Gary! Yes, Walbro are great pumps, and thanks for your input! On a side note, I just replaced my 4th wheel bearing yesterday on my 2010 9-3 XWD (wanted them all new, since I had 0ne go bad). Now they are all new, so I shouldn't have to worry about those for a while! I used Napa brand, because I understand that they use SKF bearings in them. I hope that is true, but that is what I found in my research. SKF makes an awesome bearing!

      @@doug900S What's up! I used the Walibro GSS341-400-791, but AEM also has a nice pump too. The pump that I listed is a high-flow pump. I will be installing one in my 2009 v6, already got one in my 2003 Linear (decided to give her the Aero flava).
