22 is a good ending to this birthday saga - basically her decision to enjoy her 22 birthday since she didn't get to enjoy 21

You were spot on with the fact that he could have called her beforehand.
And this is EXTRA brutal because he later claimed that he had a schedule conflict with work and had to attend an event.
That makes it WORSE, dude! Nobody in his industry finds out the night-of that there's a movie event. It just really highlights how he prioritized her (he didn't) and then didn't have the guts to end it himself.
She was 20 wheb they started dating and he was 29. Hence the line in ATW, about her being nothing but an ever-lovely jewel to him.
Songs like this are why it's hard for Swifties not to hate people who hurt her. We don't know his side of things (tho they couldn't justify this) or if he's changed as a person by now, but the PAIN is so visceral when you hear the impact it had on her...especially because it's sadly so relatable.

Legitimately one of my favorite songs. Even if you haven't had this very specific thing happen to you, I think everybody's experienced this kind of profound disappointment, y'know? Where you realize that you care more about someone than they care about you. Where someone calls you up just to break you like a promise when it's already too late to do anything about it. Like you said---he could have called before! During! So many opportunities and he just...leaves her watching the front door all night.
You always nail it when it comes to seeing straight to the heart of these things, imo. I really enjoy your reactions. I grew up with a great dad like Taylor, and you grow up assuming that all the men in your life will always show up like your dad has, without fail. You can count on him 100%. You don’t know any different. So when it happens, it’s shocking and painful realizing they’re not all good guys like your dad.

I like this one even better than "All too Well". Those sweeping strings, (cello or double bass), grab your emotions right from the start.
Then the piano chords and just her vocals, there's the drum...that build up for the chorus. I can picture this on a movie. It's epic and cinematic.
This is definitely in my top 10, favourite of ALL, of her songs. That cello sends chills down my spine. One of the most emotional instruments of all time imho. Have a great holiday season Mr Alpha and the wolfpack. Ironically, I was just watching werewolves on TV- Trueblood!

@@ToneyReactions Currently bingewatching it for the gazillionth time! I found the books couple of years before the show developed and although there's a lot of changes, somehow they both work. Which is tough for me- I'm more of a book person and get protective of adaptations! You may want to cover her song "Haunted", from "Speak Now". I didn't realise till this year, that part of it, (strings- AGAIN!) That it's in an episode of season 4. They even have a tiny tongue in cheek joke, about 30yr old guy liking the CD!
Not too many people talk about this heartbreaking track of hers. One of my fav ones tbh.

Same thing happened to me. Not my 21st but the man I was in love with never showed up to my birthday party and I ended up having to third wheel it with my sister and her husband. Never been so embarrassed. Definitely the moment I knew :(

AAH!! okokokokOKAY @ your suggesting this is where the actress checks in on taylor (around 5 mins) - so, I’ve always gotten the sense that this song is about a private birthday party she had with close friends and family (since she sings “But your close friends always seem to know // when there’s something really wrong // so they follow me down the hall // and there in the bathroom” - in this song, it’s her friends knowing her well enough to check in on her,,,, which,,,, ig could be actresses? it’s taylor mf alison swift. But anyway. I tend to think of her other friends, like Abigail). In atwtmvtvftv, it’s the actress (rumored to be Jennifer Aniston - though, I guess it could also very well be Anne Hathaway; in fact, it may be Hathaway more than Aniston) who checks in on her. My guess is that in atw she’s remembering this night and then breaking down again over it at a separate event, in a different bathroom. Not to mention, in the short film for atwtmvtvftv, there are two different looking “party” scenes. There’s the intimate looking one, with the birthday cake and everything (looks like it’s a buncha close friends and family - if there are other celebrities there, I feel like she’d be able to name them other than being so distraught she doesn’t even recognize who is checking in on her; “some actress askin me what happened”) and then there’s the separate event, with Sadie in a black dress, leaning against a wall - it looks more stuffy, like an award show after party thing she attended to make more connections. This connections event could be where she reflected on her relationship with Jake, felt all the heartache again, and looked at it from a new perspective - thus causing her to break down in a bathroom. So, while yes, this is the night that she is crying about in the bathroom when the actress checks in on her in atwtmv, this is not THE NIGHT the actress was present for. The actress was not at the birthday party, however she is there when taylor grieves over the night on a separate night. I absolutely LOVE how you’ve been reacting to taylor’s version, btw!

The fact that is friends were there expecting him to be there cause that’s what he told them and then no one knew where he was till the next day just add a whole new layer to it. Cause not only did he let her down but his friends lost trust in him.

After watching this I did some investigating on Jake. They were together from October 2010-December 2010. Through the autumn leaves until the snow fell. I feel like Jake was her first real love. Maybe even the one who keeps her in the "restaurant".
Ok, so hear me out, 13 years after 2010 would be October 2023. Maybe when she fell in love with Travis. Real love, worldwide success, Time's Person of the Year......and all Jake can do is read the Time magazine (parallel to her book 13 years later in the video)!
Of note, the scarf was red for optics. There are pictures of her wearing "the scarf". The freaky part is that Jake has been photographed wearing the scarf years after they ended 😲
