    What is done with the empty combs after new bees leave it? How are the combs that contain the honey that are ready to be collected?
    I’m 12 years old and I want to start beekeeping one day so I want to learn some things about bees 🐝💟

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 2 lety

      That’s awesome! You’ll be a great beekeeper! When new baby bees hatch from the comb, then the queen fills it with another egg. Queens usually keep the brood (eggs and larvae) together and the honey mostly in a different area of the hive. When I harvest the honey, I give the empty comb back to the bees to repair it and fill it again. It’s hard for them to make wax so i try to save as much as I can for them. Does that answer your question?

      Good question! Sorry I am so late replying to your question. I do use a queen excluder sometimes but this year I didn't. I know they are helpful in keeping the brood in the lower boxes but I haven't had much trouble with the bees mixing the frames up and when they rarely do, it's easy to make a quick switch of location.

      Hi! Welcome to the wonderful world of bees 🐝 You can mix the water with honey instead of sugar but honestly bees like simple sugar water more because it’s easier for them to digest. Honey is their winter and emergency food storage so it’s there when they need it but it’s not their favorite food.

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 4 lety +1

      Lil Spot Great question. Sorry I didn’t make that clear in the video. Capped means the comb is full of honey and the bees “cap” it off with a cover of wax. Comb that is not capped will show the honey (because the bees are still filling it) while capped honey will hide the ho way because the bees are done filling it and put a lid of wax over top.

    I notice you feed with sugar water but what natural sources do the bees also eat from like clover, flowers, etc... I know some beekeepers keep specific plants nearby like certain flowers which give the honey a unique flavor. Also how many times a year can you usually harvest honey?

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety

      Our property has several acres of clover plus a bunch of persimmon trees. We are up against 2,000 acres of national forest so we have tons of other sources for them as well. I love that our honey is sourced from clover and persimmon trees. The weirdest plant I've ever heard of beekeepers sourcing their honey from is Kudzu, but it creates a naturally purple honey!

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety

      That’s a good observation but the honey I harvest is not from sugar water. I let the bees gather and make it naturally. The honey they store for themselves for the winter is partially sourced from the sugar water but it’s been found to be perfectly fine for them and they love it.

    How did you avoid the brood getting in the honey without using the extractor?

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety +1

      You mean with the extractor? I guess it doesn’t really matter what technique I use to extract the honey because at harvest time I never took out any frames that had any brood. Since you want to leave some honey in the hive for the bees, I just left all the honey frames that also had brood on it. My queens never ventured too far up in the hive to make brood in the honey frames a problem. Does that answer your question?

  • @DonnyT744
    @DonnyT744 Před 3 lety +1

    When your kids are outside, how close can they get to the hive without bothering the bees? My kids have a playhouse & swing about 20ft away from where I might build a new apiary. Great video.

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety +1

      Great question, my kids can easily walk around our apiary and look in the windows to see the bees without any problems but I probably wouldn’t put any of their play equipment that close because sometimes the bees can get extra aggressive (like whenever I feed them) or get a little too inquisitive. Bees don’t like the color black (the color of their enemy, the skunk) or strong smells like hairspray or perfume. Kids can be safe around an apiary but I wouldn’t set up permanent play equipment close by. Maybe 80-100 feet would be better?

    • @DonnyT744
      @DonnyT744 Před 3 lety +1

      @@TheLittleBlackShadeTree Oh boy. I also have skunks in my back yard. Thank you.

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety +1

      You can help protect your hives from skunks by putting skunk boards down in front of your hive entrance. They are basically boards with lots of nails sticking up to prevent them from being able to walk on it. It makes the skunks expose their bellies to the bees which is their vulnerable area. Skunks most likely won’t risk it and will stay away. Not that great to have around little kids though. Unlike bears, skunks eat the bees, not the honey.

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 4 lety +4

      moira main Thanks! To answer your question: Absolutely! Beekeepers often times use “Queen excluders” which are wire grated that are placed in between the brood box and the honey boxes. The queens are too big to fit through them but the rest of the colony can happily move freely through the excluder.

    • @TheLittleBlackShadeTree
      @TheLittleBlackShadeTree  Před 3 lety +1

      @@scuffd8734 Oh, or do you mean how do I harvest the intact pieces of honeycomb? Most of my frames have a plastic foundation and cannot provide whole pieces of honeycomb, however sometimes I’ll give my bees a frame or two that’s too short for the box, such as a medium super frame in a deep brood box. The bees fill in the space by drawing out whole sections of honeycomb. Then when it’s time to harvest I just cut it off in one large piece and later cut into smaller pieces to fit in the jars.
