Chambale - Friend of Samora Machel's father.
Samora Moisés Machel was born in a family of farmers on September 29,
1933 in Chilembene, Gaza province, Mozambique.
Samora Machel lived a childhood where his parents suffered a lot during colonial times under Portuguese rule, he also witnessed a Mozambique where, monopolistic companies forced the natives to cultivate
vast stretches of cotton, which were later bought at bargain prices by the same companies. This brutal exploitation meant that Mozambicans became a people unable to meet their most basic needs, consequently, many peasants migrated to South Africa to work in the mines.
At school, students were required to pay very high tuition fees and also cultivate large tracts of missionary land. Teaching natives was never seen as a priority. The natives just had to know enough to be able to work for the Portuguese. The student's progress had to be the product of their own individual effort. It was, therefore, through his own effort that Samora Machel finished primary school.
After the end of primary education, Samora refused to continue his studies and decided to graduate in nursing.
In the late 1950s, Samora witnessed a rapid growth in patriotic awareness on the African continent. Samora and his companions followed with
attention the Vietnam war of liberation against French colonialism, the war of
the liberation of Algeria, the first independence of Africa, the conflict in Congo, and the beginning of the armed struggle for the liberation of Angola in 1961. These events
constituted a powerful catalyst for the Mozambican patriotic movement and filled Samora Machel and his companions with enthusiasm.
Samora was taken to Algeria for military training. Where he was much appreciated for his way of working and was quickly promoted to higher positions due to his discipline and the good way he worked.
After the assassination of Eduardo Mondlane, the leader of Frelimo, Samora was chosen as the new leader of the movement. He fought hard, fought many battles until finally in 1975 Mozambique achieved independence under his leadership.
