  • The 2022 Mercedes S-Class is more than the pinnacle of the lineup, it's quite simply one of the best cars in the world. It's also a window into the future of the upcoming redesigns of Mercedes' more affordable sedans.

    It’s a new era for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. With electric luxury cars emerging from newcomers and even within Mercedes itself, the S-Class has been forced to shift its priorities a bit with this new generation. In an effort to prove that it is still the penultimate choice for customers who require the most serene and lavish driving experience, it introduces some exciting new technology and driving aids.
    Before you enter Mercedes-Maybach territory, there are two flavors on offer for 2022. The S 500 4MATIC, with a 3.0L inline-6 turbo mild hybrid setup, starts at $111,100. Our tester is the S 580 4MATIC, which is powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 mild hybrid but loses the lesser model’s electric supercharger. Nevertheless, the power from this model is lofty and linear, giving drivers more than enough oomph when pushing it. 0-60 mph happens in 4.4 seconds. Look for AMG models to emerge in the near future, but for now this is the fastest S-Class powertrain.
    Inside, the S-Class is tech-forward, with a large center touchscreen that handles the majority of controls. It does not, however, get the EQS’s impressive 'Hyperscreen', even as an option. This is likely due to the fact that Mercedes really wanted to set that model apart from the S-Class, and possibly because packaging was easier with its electric platform. It doesn’t really matter though, because the rest of the car, even with its minuscule flaws here and there, still makes for the best luxury sedan in the world.

      All due to the stupid low-profile tires. To keep the wheels from being damaged they need stiff sidewalls, and there isn't as much air to provide cushioning. In a sports car that tradeoff makes sense, but not in a big, cushy luxury cruiser. I'd take 19" wheels if I could. The loss of handling prowess would be minor. As time goes on and tech improves, that profile/shape weirdness of EVs won’t be necessary and designers will have more freedoms. Same way how you needed that ugly Prius shape to get 50 mpg but today you can get 50mpg in a normal car shape. Basically we’ll need a more robust charging network, faster charging, and better battery tech so electric cars don’t have to look weird to be practically efficient.

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 Před 2 lety

      It's not that the aerodynamic issues changed, it's that the customers did. Early hybrid buyers wanted the highest possible mileage, even if it meant weird styling, because gas mileage was the only reason to buy them. Now hybrids are just one engine option among several and sell to a broader group.od buyers who aren't as willing to drive an odd-looking car. For those who still value max efficiency, there is still the Prius (and a few others), though most of that crowd has moved on to EVs.
