This episode is really about Tony needing to choose between power and intimacy. It's part of the larger theme in the show of Tony being confronted with needing to sell part of his soul for material gain. The decision over Feetch is a crucial crossroads for him in that regard. On the one hand, Feech is among the only men who is authentic and brave enough to be real with Tony. Like Carmella had told him earlier, the other men just agree with Tony and act friendly because they're afraid of him. Feetch is different. He's the only one in Tony's crew who can give him recognition as a genuine person. He won't laugh if a joke isn't funny. He won't keep quiet or defer if he thinks he's being wronged. Through him, Tony could actually engage with a real human being *as* just a human being. At the same time, all of this means that Tony will never have total power over Feetch. Feetch is his own man. He won't fall in line at any and all cost. When Tony remembers Feetch not laughing at his joke, it's both a warning that he can't control him into submission and a reminder that absolute power means total isolation from everyone else. Tony chooses power, of course, but the tears at the end are him still being haunted by the awareness that he really has no one; he's necessarily alone among these men. In the end, Tony's emotionless response about Chrissy agreeing with him ("It's nice that he agrees, but I'm not running a fuckin' popularity contest") is Tony coming full circle; he's affirming his solitude for the sake of maintaining absolute rule over the family.
Your comment helped me understand a constant dynamic in my own life. I'm not welcomed in circles of power. And I'm extremely appreciated in intimate and honest environments. And now I see that it is for the same reason. An honest person can be your friend, but cannot be controlled. They're two completely different needs. Thank you for sharing this. It's extremely accurate and smart.
I initially thought it was him stealing Feech's thunder of the room and Tony is now feeling bad for Feech, and sort of understands why Feech went to Johnny Sac. But you're explanation makes more sense.
Tony made a joke, and he realised that the guys who were laughing respected his status as boss. However, when looking at Feech he could see that he could never accept him as the boss. It was the same with Richie
On my first watch, I just through Tony was going through an emotional time, and he was tired of the fakeness, and he appreciated Feech's refusal to laugh as honesty, instead of showing face, thus got up and embraced him. Now, I know Tony isn't that self-reflective.
@@DekuStickGamer Carmela said they only laughed at his jokes because they feared him. Tony realised that Feech didn't fear him meaning it is dangerous to keep him around.
Little Stevie was one of the most intuitive actors. For somebody who never acted before, he was genius in his subtlety and how much he could convey with the smallest expression. Sil was my favorite character, next to Tony.
I'm ashamed to admit I never noticed it was the same dude😂. I have seen Scarface so many goddamn times. Great acting on Frank/Feech/I won't cheat and look up his name's part.
@@MrRyan-wu4jx Exactly, because as Silvio pointed out "he is well liked". Whacking Feech would have caused problems. It was much better to just set him up to get sent back to the can.
So Feech robbed a guy Tony specifically pointed out as being a friend of his, and when confronted about it starts acting uppity? Tony was being quite merciful not liquidating Feech right then and there.
Classic scene. Every job has an old timer like Feech around to lecture you about how it was "back in my day". Tony's frustrations are totally relatable here.
Yeah, but Feech was tougher than fat Tony from Jersey who had become a lazy complacent Boss who expected everyone in his crew to earn for him and kick up envelopes on a weekly basis to support his lifestyle of gambling and whores along with that greedy money-grubbing wife Carmela. Feech was like a shark. He smelled blood and discontent. Old school guys can do that. So, he started running his own program. Tony knew he couldn't control Feech. Or he would be replaced. So, Tony got rid of Feech by setting him up with the Flat screen T.V caper. Can't believe Feech didn't see it coming. I would have. But he didn't. Next day Feech is on the bus back to New Jersey State Prison. I bet he knew Tony set him up.
The tatic of "shut the fuck up" and then......... "I'm trying to do you a favour" was never going to work on a man that was made in the old country. The sense of reality they impose on a room, I've learnt life lesson watching sopranos.
People say it was the Johnny Sack comment that dealt him in. But it was actually when Tony was remembering Feeches unwillingness to kiss his ass at the card game (like the way Paulie does it).
Yeah but it was the Johnny sacks comment that made Tony reconsider feech. Johnny is the under boss of one of the five families, if you have his backing you could easily take out Tony and take over the family. That’s what happened.
This is the most boss I’ve ever seen tony be. French is a seasoned gangster and isn’t phased by anyone, except he gets completely turned around by Tony here
Feech was feigning deference to Tony's authority here to save face and defuse his own situation. Tony realized that no matter what Feech will always think of him as the upstart little punk that jacked his poker game from him and he was never allowed to give him comeuppance because his bosses at the time were impressed by his balls at robbing the game. The look of pure fury Feech gives Tony when he told his "joke" at the poker game he set up for him told everything Tony needed to know. The only recourse he had was to get rid of Feech to prevent him from eventually dragging him down.
This is a tough decision to judge. On the one hand, if Feech was left as he is, there was 90% probability that he would eventually move against Tony. But on the other hand, Tony made himself vulnerable by eliminating all the strong and dependable guys in his crew, which costed him dearly later when he had to go to war with NY.
Most of these dependable guys were ready to kill Tony at one point. Feech wasn't dependable, he acted as if he was the boss, Ralph offered to switch families to John. Richie tried to move against him. Chris might have checked into recovery again, the way he was going. Later on, if they were alive Tony would have have been dead much earlier if not late. Furio and Tony B were the only dependable ones.
@@ab_chauhan he could have been more diplomatic with richie and ralphie. It's not like they always hated tony, it was a long period of them and tony having friction. Chris, tony could have dealt with if tony wasn't an ass. Tony could have dealt with furio if he wasn't so prideful, after all him and carmela didn't actually even do anything. Tony B did have to go.
Now this time, I really wish they had done more with Feech, he's a great fit in the Sopranos family, gives a lot of action, tells good jokes, and most importantly, not afraid of standing up to Tony.
This scene is epic in that the tables turned on Feech. He was always that loudest and most threatening in the room. That screaming gurgling yell to sound tough. But in an instant Tony dwarfed Feech on his feet while he was laid back in a chair with the line and delivery. "...otherwise, SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Sil earned his number two spot. Every other member of the crew would have questioned it just a little, Sil just says "don't be too hard on yourself Ton". Always completely trusted Tony and played his role.
I agree, Sil was the best underboss anybody could ask for. He will never want to replace you, and he trusts your ability 100% and is also 100% loyal. Plus, he's smart and calm.
When I originally saw this, I always interpreted Feech not laughing at his knowingly stupid joke as a sign that he was the only one tony could actually trust. After a few rewatches tho you can tell after he says “I’ll learn” the second time he says “yeah” he wasn’t really gonna change.
The laughing part is great because earlier Carmela said "They only laugh at your stupid jokes because they respect you" (referring to his subordinates), so Feech not laughing shows that he has no respect for Tony.
"got to remember I still look at you as a kid" ... this is when I knew Tony was gonna setup up Feech, this is how it happens, this is how one sentence can get you fukcd
It also showed how Silvio was a good advisor but didn't see half the angles that Tony did. After Tony died or whatever there'd be no real leader left for the fam.
Yeah Tony's obviously right that Feech being well-liked is another reason to get rid of him. If Ritchie had been well-liked Tony would probably be dead.
Although it was pretty obvious that feech was never going to get any better, still kinda fucked up that he apologized and Tony still sent his ass back to jail lol.
@@dang5297 id much rather be killed in feech’s situation tbh. Having to spend the rest of your life in jail after already doing so much time fucking sucks.
Tony knew Feech would eventually be a big problem. He was already disrespecting old arrangements, butting heads with Paulie and Tony. I think his lack of fear, love or respect for Tony in this scene is well demonstrated- he hits the wedding knowing the jews are Tony's friends, he takes the stolen cares to Johnny Sack to sell them instead of bringing them to Tony and then Tony also mentions this is not the first time Feech was not kicking up to the boss
Robert Logia showed real emotion there at the end immediately after he hugged Tony, knowing it was his last scene with Tony and one of his last on the show.
You know it isn't filmed like that yeah? He probably had 20 more takes and other scenes off the club set with Tony after he filmed this one. They don't record in the order of how they appear hahahahhaha The name's Banji codswallop and that was codswallop
I'm not saying he was wrong in this case, but tony never showed appreciation or respect for dudes that were high ranking members, got pinched doing their job, stood up and did decades, and when you go to jail for 10-30 years and come back and the low level knock around kid is your boss, things are super strict from what they used to be, it's gonna be hard to transition back into modern society as a criminal. If I was under tony and I went away facing 20 shine boxes, I would be a lot more likely to flip knowing I wont get any respect for standing up. That with how he treated bobby when he got jumped and still made his number, beating up that kid for no reason, how he would show his underlings no respect and embarss them in front of everyone when he was having a bad day, he created no motivation to be loyal. You need to balance fear and respect, positive and negative reionforment. He never showed positive reinforcement, and sometimes negative when it wasn't even deserved. He was much happier and more competent as a captain.
That’s facts. As I’m rewatching the series again a scene that sticks wit me now was Chris before he was even made wanting positive reinforcement at the bbq from Tony. It almost took all the energy out of Tony to say “ you’re right “ to him. But I think that’s the most important part of the show , Tony has the capabilities to be a great leader but him needing a therapist every episode of the show is showing the viewer that he’s not mentally fit to lead all of the time in that business . None of them are because look what it cost them . Every leader of the show collapses internally in a way Junior(Alzheimer’s) Jackie(Cancer) , Johnny Sack(Cancer) , Tony(paranoia)
I wouldn't go that far. Tony talked about Feech like he was a rockstar and lauded the man. With both him and Richie Tony made sure to set them back up with Ritchie getting right back to running his own crew. Richie and Feech kept disrespecting Tony and in Richie's he probably should've been dead after running Beansie. He nearly killed someone under Tony's protection and crippled him after being told point blank to leave him alone. If anything Tony's respect and affection for Richie as a mentor and his late best friend's big brother is probably the thing that kept him from being chopped up or to lightly paraphrase Tony, "found in the back one of your trucks" in fairly short order. Feech was actively making deals with high ranking members family's behind Tony's and making a habit of ignoring his orders. Again Tony's good feelings for someone probably kept them from being killed.
@@Updog115 yep! I read that feechs actor was degrading mentally while filming for the Sopranos too so he would have to do multiple takes from forgetting his lines and what not. He still did it because hes the man
Please, give me a second chance, huh Tony? I'll give you $10 million. All of it. $10 million. Ok, Tony? You'll never see me again. Please, Tony, I never did nothing to nobody.
If Tony didn't do anything about Feech, Johnny Sac would've continued to sow division in the Jersey family. Driving a wedge into them allows New York to secretly siphon money from Jersey through Feech, but also it allows them take Tony out if they ever needed to and replace him easily with someone else who is well respected, would work with them, and wouldn't seek revenge. In short, Feech was becoming a threat to Tony's leadership and if Tony didn't do something about it then it would only have gotten much worse over time.
Consider all the guys who got out of prison and tried to re-enter the life: Feech LaManna, Tony B., Phil Leotardo, Richie- Aprile, Angelo Garepe- NONE of them succeeded.
Originally he WAS going to learn. The original plan was that Feech would become Tony's fiercest ally. It would have been Tony, Sil and Feech in power. Sadly, Loggia couldn't handle the workload.

Although I am moved... Feech couldn’t get out of his own way... and the mere fact that he kept Dismissing everything Tony would tell him, and then use his own history as the excuse... Tony was right to say “what did I learn from Richie... Nip it in the bud...” Richie, Feech, Tony B and Ralphie- all very valuable problems that ended up Costing Tony more, in the end...

It's because we all have these old blowhards somewhere in our social circle, and we're glad to see him put in his place.
It's like Sun Tazoo says "a good commander is benevolent and unconcerned with fame..."
Nice analysis there.

Meh Tony was a jagoff hothead honestly. Never a good boss
That murderous stare Tony gives him at 2:10, his eyes roll back into his head, it’s like something evil is taking over.
This is the most boss I’ve ever seen tony be. French is a seasoned gangster and isn’t phased by anyone, except he gets completely turned around by Tony here
He faked it but
Feech was feigning deference to Tony's authority here to save face and defuse his own situation.
Times have changed. The old man is old school.

French was a badass.
It’s cool that even though he knew Feech was a threat, he still had a ton of respect and even shed a tear for what he was about to do to him

0:06 Tony's expiration date was 2007 too
its the details. that little eye flicker at the end. gandolfini was masterclass.

The actor who played Feech sounded super familiar but as soon as he started yelling I said, “That’s Frank.”
The great Robert Loggia.
Feech and Tony probably WERE "alright" after that encounter. Tony really set him straight.
Its so obvious feech didnt respect his position as the boss..this conversation alone shows it..
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
I always go back to this.
Feech is 0 for 2 with dealing with guys named Tony 😂

If Tony didn't do anything about Feech, Johnny Sac would've continued to sow division in the Jersey family. Driving a wedge into them allows New York to secretly siphon money from Jersey through Feech, but also it allows them take Tony out if they ever needed to and replace him easily with someone else who is well respected, would work with them, and wouldn't seek revenge. In short, Feech was becoming a threat to Tony's leadership and if Tony didn't do something about it then it would only have gotten much worse over time.
