An interesting spin you could put on this would be if the grey goo were semi-intelligent, and would turn anyone it 'ate' into a robot-like fax-similie of the victim. So you could mix both a grey goo and a zombie(-ish) plague scenario. [ And yes the allusion to the Cybermen of Dr. Who fame is intentional ]
